The History of Bolsa Chica

The Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve has a long and storied history, stretching back as far as 9,000 years ago when the first ancestors of the Native Americans first crossed the Bering Strait land bridge. Some eras in this history were dark, but all have shaped the wetlands that we know today. In this video, done by California Naturalist participant Eric Benson, you'll get a brief overview of the history of Bolsa Chica, starting with Orange County's first people.
This video was done as a capstone project as part of the Bolsa Chica Conservancy's California Naturalist Certification Program in partnership with UC Agriculture and Natural Resources, and has been shared with permission from the participant, Eric Benson. In addition to being an amazing video producer, Eric is also a phenomenal photographer, and has featured in our annual calendar for several years. I remember riding my bike to Bolsa after a storm in the 1980's covered PCH entirely with sand. I never forgot that splendor.

I lived directly adjacent to Bolsa Chica from 1970 for 20 years and currently have a boat in Huntington Harbor. I always loved this place and its secrets. The "underground "bunkers" the Fox dens, the old smokie stables. Water skiing was often seen in the estuary in the 70's. We rode our bikes their when "Jogging was still a new concept" and kids rode bikes never did we see adults walking or riding in the area. Minibikes, seashells, Indian graves and BMX riding trails. The Old rope swing and many, many more trees than today.

Well done except absolutely no mention of how Bolsa Chica Wetlands went from 300 acres to 1,400 protected acres. This story is a huge part of its history! If the narrator didn't want to mention this was due to the Amigos de Bolsa Chica, at least he could have said it was due to hard-working individuals in the community or thanks to a local non-profit.

I am grateful to the Amigos de Bolsa Chica for bringing these rare wetlands back to good health! I have never been to Bolsa Chica but feel good just knowing the preserve exists. I will visit with my family for the first time soon, thanks to Shirley Detloff, Jerry Donohue, Charles Falzon, Vic Leipzig, Mel Nutter, Kelly O'Reilly, Dave Carlberg, and Margaret Carlberg and all the members of Amigos de Bolsa Chica. Thank you, Amigos de Bolsa Chica! I can't wait to visit these rare and precious wetlands.

I broke both my legs in 1996 and once i was able to stand and drive i would pack my chair head down to the Bolsa Chica wetlands and roll my chair on the loop trail around the pond. My arms are still sore. Ha!

Error: the Red line was demolished by a consortium of Rubber, Oil, and automobile companies to encourage people to purchase cars. They eere eventually fined the grand sum of $1 for their treacherous behavior. Look it up.
