The Byzantine Empire, also referred to as the Eastern Roman Empire, was the continuation of the Roman Empire in the East during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, when its capital city was Constantinople. It survived the fragmentation and fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century AD and continued to exist for an additional thousand years until it fell to the Ottoman Turks in 1453.

I like the introduction, too often is the Roman heritage of the Empire rejected or ignored, both by Greeks and Westerners, for their own propaganda purposes. The (Eastern) Roman Empire of this period was a wonderful mixture of Greek and Roman cultures, politics, way of life that led to the development of one of the most interesting civilizations of the Middle Ages/late Antiquity. We Greeks should be proud to have been the true last standing parts and peoples of this (about) 2000 years old Empire, instead of rejecting it.

After the empire was divided to east and west parts, it started to decline. Every expansion would be followed by bigger contraction. Every expansion was smaller than before. Justinian was not an exception. What remarkable was it took more one thousand years until the final curtain.

Yes, They called themselves Romans, but it is agreed upon historians that it is not the Roman Empire because of differences in culture, motives, location, time period, and capital city. By all definite terms, the Byzantines were more of a predecessor of the Romans than a actual example of them

The decisive defeat of the Byzantine army and the capture of the Emperor Romanos IV Diogenes[9] played an important role in undermining Byzantine authority in Anatolia. this was when it started going down hill. the emperor himself was captured in battle

The whole term “byzantine” only exists because Catholics retconned the fact they destroyed the Roman Empire in 1204 and are so ashamed they’ve gone to make (the already very Greek empire) appear different when only administratively was where Latin was used anyway. I can go on for days on how 476 is simply HRE propaganda to empower their church’a supremacy and diminish Rome’s Orthodox beliefs.

Byzantium was a tremendous force until the emergence of the Serbian Nemanjic emperor Dusan, who seized Epirus from Byzantium, but he failed to overwhelm Thessaloniki and Constantinople. however, when the Emperor Dusan Byzantium died, he recovered Peloponnese and parts of Chalkidiki, but later in 1450 she lost the Solun and the peninsula of Peloponnese, and in 1453, she fell back

I think that during Alexios I, Ioannes II and Manuel I, all the land that is now Croatia, Bosnia& Herzegovina, Slovenia, Serbia and Kosovo were Byzantine provinces. Also, at Ioannes' and Manuel's ages all the south Asia minor for Cilicia to Antioch were Byzantine provinces. There are also some mistakes...

The Byzantine Empire lost slowly Sardinia after the Arab conquest of Sicily which made communication between Cagliari and Constantinople impossible. The Byzantine governors became autonomous and gave rise to the "Giudicati", independent principalities that lasted until the 13th century when they were conquered by the maritime Republic of Pisa. The last Byzantine possession in Italy was Bari, conquered by the Normans in 1071.

At 0:55, 533: Belisarius and Justinian try to remake the Roman Empire. It's working! By 1:00, 555. Yes, yes! It's going to happen! Oh no, that's just a set back, yeah? Whoa, Italy stop that. At 1:11, 611. Phokas usurped the crown starting a massive war with Persia (Khosrau has been friends with the previous emperor, Mauricius). 1:14, 628. Yes! Heraclius saved the day! Did someone order a new religion? Oh, Heraclius, you would be remembered as the greatest if you hadn't lost so quickly to Islamic invasions. 1:18, 646. It's not like the Eastern Mediterranean and Egypt were providing huge amounts of wealth, right? At least, Carthage is still there! 1:28, 698. It's impressive they kept Carthage that lack, but it's gone now. (sad noises for a while) 2:02, 871-876. Retake Bari, a small emirate in Italy. 2:12. 913-927. War with Bulgarians. Ow. 2:20, 963-969. Nikephoros II. Take back the east! Got murdered by his nephew, who still did okay. 2:24, 976-1025. BASIL II THE BULGARSLAYER!! Bam! Armenia. Boom! All the way to the Danube! Even the Croatians pay tribute! 2:42, 1071. Battle of Manzikert. Ow, just ow. 2:45, 1081. Start of Kommenid Dynasty. (Not great at first, but it gets some of Anatolia back) 2:48, 1096. First Crusade. 3:05, 1185. Bulgaria's back. 3:10, 1203. What are you doing Fourth Crusade? What Alexios IV promised you riches for toppling his relatives? Oh sure, just take everything. 3:22, 1261. Michael VIII retakes Constantinople. Time to reboot. 3:31, 1302. Battle of Bapheus. Most of Anatolia lost again. 3:34, 1321-1328, 41-47, 52-57. Multiple civil wars. 1453. The end.
