Loved that Konami managed to re-invent Track & Field/Hyper Sports/Hyper Olympic during their 1987 offering. It's a shame seeing such a beloved dev/publisher completely lose their collective marbles. Sega did the same. They forgot what it is about their brand that people love.

I loved the graphical look of Konami games. This was one I had on my trusty, dusty C64 and remember it as a joystick killer! The drill instructor fight I think pays homage to An Officer and a Gentleman where Richard Gere and his instructor Lou Gossett Jr fight on a raised platform in a hangar.

Yep, the first level involved shaking the joystick left + right to build power, not too dissimilar to the swimming level in Konami's other game Hypersports!

Ah yes I had this on the C64, and you’re damn right about that music blasting you in the face, and what a tune it was! The game was not kind to any of my joysticks though and I could never pass the iron man stage. I do recall seeing Combat School in the arcade once though and it did have a trackball. I think it was an amusement park arcade but it was a very long time ago now…

I've seen this game use a trackball and, a few years later, a joystick. Since I played it first in Germany using a trackball, I guess it was called boot camp. The game is a lot easier using a stick, IMO. Could never beat the final stage.

Boy you can really see the influence this game and Contra had on each other in the Level 4 shooting range. Everything from the player strafing animation, to the music, and even the sound of the gun. It looks like this game and the arcade Contra, then the NES Contra, were all developed right around the same time by Konami, so there must have been a number of the same artists and game developers working on all three.

Hi! I came across your channel. I play many original arcade machines in clubs in Germany and put them online as videos. Since I would like to know the background, I think the historical information about these games is awesome. Could you also get the historical information about Pinballaitomat? There are, of course, tables with certain themes that are easy to recognize, such as Star Wars or Star Trek... But many old tables are difficult to identify. In terms of how often this was seen in real life arcades compared to other Konami games, between Boot Camp and Combat School, KLOV lists 40 cabinets/PCBs. This compares to 557 Track and Field/Hyper Olympic, 187 Hyper Sports/Hyper Olympic '84, 145 Rush'n Attack/Green Beret, 135 Contra/Gryzor, 95 Jackal/Top Gunner, and 45 Gradius/Nemesis (PlayChoice not included). Also, Konami: Pick a title. Americans and Brits don't need different English names. It's like they couldn't remember if it was a NA or EU cabinet unless they stuck a different name on it.
