This was probably my best game in the arcades. I "finished" the game on one quarter a few times. After you get through it, it starts over with a higher difficulty. I could do about 45 minutes on a single quarter. I love this game.

Great video. This was one of the hardest games I completed. The arcade version didnt fuck around. For me, difficulty wise, Ghost N Goblins arcade took me around 11 hours to complete both required loops and this game took me around 25 hours. I never came across any brick walls in GNG but this game had a few bosses that I couldnt put a dent in for many hours. Considering its only a 30 minute game and has unlimited continues it was surprisingly dense.

The fact that "Red Dead" would never have existened without "Gun.Smoke" is another reason why I'm proud to say I grew up with this 1985 classic. I like to believe that the events of "Gun.Smoke" are canon to the lore of "RDR".

On the NES, you could put in a code to make the cowboy shoot the direction you were facing. Turns out, the old control scheme was superior and made you want to switch back instantly.

Absolutely. I've always liked westerns but never got into the TV show of Gunsmoke until about a year ago. Now it's one of my favorites, although I much preferred the early episodes with Chester that featured more of Marshall Dillon.

This will always be one of my favorite Capcom shmups. It had great music, neat controls with the five-way shooting plus the left+right spread shot I always forgot to use, and was just doggone hard as nails. The NES version is fantastic, too. Even the weird stylising of its name as "Gun.Smoke" seemed oddly cool to me. Gotta say, the edits for the German version are pretty darned cool -- especially the 7th boss, Goldsmith, pulling a _Westworld_ by exposing the robot insides of his face.

This is one of gaming's true OG run n' gun games, and was one of my favorites from the period. I always loved the design of this game, as the western theme was just something that you never saw done well at the time. While Patman puts this in a category with Ghost n Goblins as far as difficulty goes, I would say this game is much harder. I've finished most versions of the G&G series, but Gunsmoke is on another level of hard AF. LOL

I concur, I spent too many summers at the arcades during my youth getting good at this game. I have always loved, loved, loved this game & enjoyed watching this upload, thanks for this.

I got my first job in 1986 at the age of 15 working as a telemarketer (crap job I know but the money was great at the time). It was in an office building located next to the Greyhound Bus station in my hometown. They had a Gun.Smoke cabinet in the bus station that I would go play on my breaks. The NES version also took up a fair amount of the Summer of '88 for me. I love this game and still play it sometimes on my favourite emulator. As of 2023 I still have not finished it. Ha, "Steer" clear of the Bull. ;) Also adding The Gun on PS2, as well as Sunset Riders too. This game, Gunsmoke, was very challenging. Commando was a lot of fun and easier to handle IMO vs the 3 buttons here. That's something about his hand breaking and using a red pen to draw. 10 stages, but I struggle to get past the first 2. Nice going, Patman!

Thanks, Patman! This is a game I’ve been looking forward to you covering for a long time! My local pizza place had the arcade version in the late 80s, although instead of a full standup cabinet they had it in a mini tabletop console at the bar. Oddly enough, the tabletop didn’t have the 3 buttons, it had one fire button and you aimed your shots 10, 12, or 2 o’clock with the joystick. So I never knew about those fancy firing angles you could do by pressing two buttons together until I played it on MAME years later. Anyway, I never got past stage 3 in the arcade but since I loved it anyway I asked for and got the NES version for Christmas in 1988. Eventually managed to beat it too, which I was very proud of. It was probably one of the hardest games that I ever owned.

My first good western game was actually Bank Panic. The game's a true classic. But Sunsetriders takes a close second. Gunsmoke sort of reminded me of 1942's gameplay.

My favorite arcade game ever. Pieced together a cabinet with all the artwork. Even custom bezel art. It looks and plays great. I have the us set 2 pcb. Which means wolf chief in round 3 and ninja in round 6. My high score is 2,042,100. Great game. Great review patman!

When I first came across Gun.Smoke in a Local Arcade... I really enjoyed it - But it did have an issue... It wasn't an OG Cabinet, obviously the arcade had only bought the board to save costs and installed it into a Spare Cabinet... ... So what was the issue? It was a TWO BUTTON CABINET!!! I could never shoot right and always wondered why! Now I know!!!

Gun.smoke had no true dedicated cabinet. It was a "kit" game. Meaning they sold the game in a box that included the pcb, control panel overlay, marquee, sideart and wiring harness. Owners would covert the game from a previous cabinet. Like say pacman or donkey kong. Games like yie ar kung fu and mat mania were other examples of conversion kit games. That had no factory cabinet

Pretty good and tough game. The first time I think I saw it was a co-worker had the actual arcade machine in his house back in '97. I didn't get very far and it was quite tough. lol And wow quite a history and I didn't realize that the TV show Gunsmoke ran 20 years. I do remember watching it as a kid though. And hey speaking of Capcom. How about doing a video on Speed Rumbler? I feel that game is super underrated and is a fun arcade game!

Gun.Smoke remains my favorite shooter on the NES. I also like it a lot more than the arcade version, which totally destroys me.

Wild Gunman was not only a Nintendo Sprites Graphics game and was a Live Action Video game? They did not have Laserdisc games back in the 70s.

I recall only encountering this cab in one place when new and it wasn't there long so I never got much time on it. I have put many hours into the NES and various compilations though.

IMO, the NES versions of Commando and Gunsmoke were rare occasions where the console version was better than the arcade.

I played a finished every level on the Nes with a standard controller and let me tell you it came with pain. I ruined the tip of my thumb firing at all the enemy’s and wound up with a hammer joint or mallet finger in the top joint of my thumb. It’s such a good game just get a controller configuration with turbo buttons to help shoot all the baddies.

I know its been said a million times but it's crazy how the Red Dead franchise has DNA from this classic. It makes me wonder if Capcom is kicking themselves in the nuts for not continuing the project as the spiritual successor.
