Yes, the 1998.5 to 2002 Cummins ram’s were compliant with emissions requirements at the time they were produced due to their electronically controlled VP44 pumps being more efficient than their predecessors. They did not have cats, just resonators. The CA versions were tuned differently to comply with CA emissions requirements, which at that time were more strict than the federal emissions requirements. I’d love to have a 1998.5 to 2002 Cummins (non 53 block). I’ve been looking for one for a while. Just can’t find one that isn’t rusted out.

I heard someone makes a tuner for the 3rd gen with a single injection event. It was mentioned that it ran stronger and got better fuel economy. They also commented that they rattled like an earlier model. I wonder what the emissions were like, and the boost from the turbo was like? Have you done a show on tuners?
@AK_5.9
@AK_5.9 8 ай бұрын
This sounds like the content I covered in my 12 valve tune (single injection event) video. I noticed less smoke with the 12 valve tune than any other tunes I have run. The boost seemed similar. Starting in cold weather takes a little more effort from the starter, but other than that it seems to run the best. It is also very loud, but I like the sound of it.

I bought a 05 dodge diesel a couple months ago. It came from Oregon and had to pass smog in northern california. It's a pre egr and only came with a cat, no other smog. The problem is the trucks computer has to be reset at the dealer to pass calif smog. Which they have to do for free. I went from a 01 tundra 4x with 15 mpg to a 3/4 ton long bed 4x with 35's and 20mpg and about double the payload/ towing ability.

I think you made an excellent choice. In my opinion, the 3rd Gen Cummins equipped Ram trucks are some of the finest trucks ever made. That’s great info, I didn’t know the 2004.5 to early 2007 California version trucks had different tuning than the non-California version trucks from those same years. It doesn’t surprise me though, as the 2nd Gen 24 valve California versions also had different tuning than the non-California versions. Up until mid 2007, the California state emissions laws were stricter than the federal emissions laws which is why you see California versions on the 1994 to 2007 trucks. Even the 03-04 California version trucks had cats on them. 2007.5 forward, the federal emissions laws became stricter than the California state emissions laws, so federally emissions compliant trucks were automatically California emissions compliant from that year until the present time. In the future that might change though, as California is constantly making moves against the diesel engine.

@@AK_5.9 Yeah the dealership wanted it back, they had it close to sold to someone in Oregon so no need for the smog bs, i found out about that the dealership would have to update the computer to pass smog without the egr, just with the cat, from a smog guy. I feel blessed it all turned out, love the truck.

The BLUETEC badging meant the emissions met 2010 50-state emissions regulations. The BLUETEC rigs from 2007.5 and 2008, from the factory, were equipped with EGR, diesel oxidation catalyst, diesel particulate filter and NOx storing catalyst. Your rig must have lost some weight at some point during its life 😎

Informative video! I’ve got a few questions and comments. I’m new to owning a Ram Diesel Truck and I’m a bit of a nerd/gear head so please bare with me. On the 1st generation Bosch mechanical fuel injectors how does the mechanical injector open? Is there a spring in each injector that measures the pressure and opens accordingly? At 3:29 you mentioned the 2nd gen & the era of electronically controlled diesel. What did you mean by that? The reason I ask is because at 5:05 you mentioned the first of the Ram trucks to be equipped with the electronically controlled common rail fuel system. Uh your statement “From here forward it gets complicated” when talking about the 2007.5 & up emissions system is definitely an understatement!!!!! Wow!! You know call me crazy but it would seem that if they stopped selling remanufactured engines for certain years and they raised diesel fuel prices and they pushed/subsidized electric vehicles/infrastructure along with requiring diesels push oxygen out their tailpipes one would get a strong feeling or suspicion THEY were trying to get rid of the diesels all together. 🤔 Nah it couldn’t be!! Again I appreciate the video. I’m new to owning a Ram Truck and diesel & found this video extremely informative. ✌🏽

Glad you enjoyed it! Congratulations on being a new Ram Diesel Truck owner. Correct, the 12 valve mechanical injectors are pintle style injectors which utilize a spring. For clarification on the electronic control. Prior to the 2nd gen 24 valves, both the fuel pumps and injectors were mechanical. Those rigs could survive an EMP attack. The 2nd gen 24 valves (1998.5-2002) were the first to utilizes an ECM controlled fuel pump (VP44 pump). 2003 was the first year of the common rail system with electronically controlled injectors. 100% on the emissions systems being complicated and adding a whole new layer of complexity to diesel truck ownership and maintenance. And yes, it does appear certain organizations are trying to get rid of the diesel engine without an adequate solution to replace the essential role it plays. Thanks for watching!

Hesitated to subscribe until I saw the efforts you put in for this unique video. If KZfaq creators received Emmies, this would be one that should get the nomination. Q: I am thinking of upgrading my stock injectors with DDP. Based on your research, the injectors for my 2018 Ram HO AISIN 3500 fire 5 events. Is there a way to have the injectors fire 4 or 3 events and still maintain power. This is my goal: Have the ultimate tow truck. Be able to tow 45-50k with zero smoke. I want to have 1500-2000 ft/lb of torque. Don’t care about HP, but I believe 750-850 would be a sweet spot. I upgraded the CP3 to a 10mm. Added a Fass 165. I am thinking of keeping the VGT turbo to retain the exhaust brakes. I am looking at a DPS compound turbo that works with my existing turbo (which I may switch later with a Cheetah or ATS VGT. What injectors would fit the bill? Would 150 hp injectors be overkill? Your expert opinion is much appreciated!
@AK_5.9
@AK_5.9 Жыл бұрын
Thank you, I had a lot of fun making it The post injection events are mostly about emissions and can be removed with tuning. To reach your goals, your 2018 truck will need a “weight loss diet”, if it’s not already on it. I’d do 100% over Exergy injectors (or equivalent) with an s366/s480 compound turbo setup with billet compressor wheels. That fuel/air combination, with proper tuning, should get you near the numbers you want with minimal smoke and good towing performance. Also, go ahead and install head studs, aftermarket valve springs and push rods (if you haven’t already). A good time to address that is while you, or your installer, are under the valve cover replacing the injectors.

Will an 03-04 turbo back exhaust fit an 05?
@AK_5.9
@AK_5.9 Жыл бұрын
I believe the 03-04 and the 04.5-07 trucks have differences in their exhaust elbows due to having different size downpipes. This means the distal end of the exhaust elbow on an 05 might not fit the proximal end of the downpipe that comes with the exhaust system (if the factory turbo setup is still present on the truck). There are ways to overcome this and make it work, but it might not be plug and play out of the box. The hangers might also have different locations, but I’m not sure about that.

I really hope someday I get to live in America. The land of the free. The government there has almost no authority to do anything. They would ever be allowed to tell an engineer how they have to build an engine. Now living under the totally private, for sale and for profit corporation known an the United States....... well they can force their tax slaves to buy whatever they choose to sell them. And sell it to them with interest on a loan, created from nothing of course 😊

Yes, the changes to the engines from 2004.5 and forward were purely to comply with federal emissions laws. Not everyone realizes that. While one can get good performance out of any of the years with the right modifications, I have yet to find a justification to move on from my ‘03.
