The history of jello salads. Gelatin has actually been around longer than you might think, and dates all the way back to medieval Europe. Here we will explore the rise and fall of jello salads and learn how America became hooked on some very strange foods.

We went to a funeral last year, where the lunch served afterwards consisted of chicken salad with mayonnaise, potato salad with mayonnaise, ham sandwiches with mayonnaise, and a yellow gelatin mold with blueberries and tiny marshmallows inside. When we were leaving, my teenage daughter said, "at least they have a sense of humor. That joke with the Jello sure lightened up the atmosphere for me." I told her I wished that were true, but instead it was a weird ricochet of something we thought of as a special treat in the 1970s. Today, as we all know, it's a crime punishable by a month of SPAM sandwiches for lunch.

In spite of what most think, there were some very good gelatin based dessert salads. However, like everything, it took skill and a very light hand.

My grandma was a bit of a jello fiend. It’s so weird, because I know she wasn’t even slightly high.

Interesting, Historidame. I remember some of these salads and desserts during 70s and early 80s. Never liked the savoury stuff!!

I loved this video and since I grew up in the 1950s, I was subjected to far too many of these culinary horrors in my childhood and adolescence. In this same vain, can you please do a history of Spam? It's a horrible canned "meat" product that was probably the result of making rations for military folk in WWII. In my family it was a staple of Sunday evening dinners (fried) that we ate off of TV trays while we watched The Walt Disney Show. It still is a major protein (and cholesterol) source for Islanders in the Pacific. I spent a couple of years on Guam and they put Spam into all three meals a day and have a correspondingly high incidence of heart disease and diabetes.

I'm glad you enjoyed! The history of spam sounds like it would interesting, I'll add it to my video idea list.

Grew up with these. Russian Roulette on a plate. Might be good.....might not. There were several I really liked with lime jello, pineapple, and cottage cheese.

To be so critical of people's tastes from a bygone era seems a little cruel to me. I grew up in the baby boom era. Some of the jello creations were tasty, and others not so much. However, all of them were visually stunning. Then there was the fondue Era, which no one seemed to know how to make or serve. I remember seeing lots of burned tongues come out of that one. But thanks for your offerings. They're fun

The jello dishes were honestly gorgeous. I admit that as someone who can't stand gelatin, perhaps I was a tad harsh. I have had some of the dessert jellos and they can be pretty good, but they're still not my thing. Thanks for commenting!
