When you think of 1950s vintage recipes, jello salad is often the first one that comes to mind. Once a status symbol that showed the world you had a refrigerator, jello today is not quite used in the same ways. But it’s certainly got us thinking… were they onto something? 🧐 Alexis deBoschnek makes this one-of-a-kind jello salad using a vintage recipe from an early edition of the Better Homes & Gardens New Cook Book. Then, she prepares her modern take on the recipe and compares the two side-by-side in a taste test. Is it time to bring back the jello salad, or is there a reason it went out of style?

In the 1960's Jell-O released savory and vegetable flavors such as celery, Italian (vegetable and seasoned tomato). Popular Jell-O recipes of the day included ingredients like cabbage, celery, green peppers, and even cooked pasta. The savory flavors have since been discontinued.

In the 1950's we had celery flavored Jello. I have a Jello cookbook from the 1960's. There were all kinds of recipes that had Jello with meat ( like tuna, shrimp ham, chicken, etc. Very interesting flavors.

Jello Salad is great! I live overseas now and it's hard to get Jello, but I can easily get gelatin, or kanten (which is differenr, but can be used similarly). Julienned carrots in a lightly sweetened lemon salad was a holiday tradition in my house. It's a nice contrast to the heavier foods. Once you go into the sweet side, there are tons of great "salads". Pears in lime jello. Cherry fluff is another great one. And let's not forget Watergate Salad, which uses Jello's sister, Jello pudding (pistachio). Mmmmmm!

Using only one Lime Jell-O box and one plain gelatin pack would mute the sweetness. Allowing the Jello to chill to a partially jelled stage, and then stirring in the veggies, yields more firmness.

Eating like our ancestors is the key to health today. I'm a traditional diet nutritionist, and try to reject today's diet trends a much as possible...since we are the sickest country in the world, and Mod Med is now the #1 industry in the country. We have obviously lost our way on the path to a healthy life. Gelatin is one of those great traditional foods, a protein that helps make us fortified and strong. It's easy to add to your diet with gelatins, broths, and even in hot beverages. I agree, the gelatin and tuna salad are probably both nummy, but best eaten separately. 🙂

Alexis is a great chef, i really like her from Tasty videos. Instead of jello you can use agar agar, it's not that sweet, and i think in 50's jellos weren't as sweet as they are now.

I knew Home Economics teachers who would give low marks just for negative remarks and disparaging facial grimaces regarding the class activities and food projects being undertaken. The expletive, "Yew!" was verboten. Grading counsel fostered more positive attitudes Adventurous spirits were strongly encouraged. But that was another era....

The jello was loose because you didnt put it in the fridge as directed. It should be half gelled before adding the insertions.

That jello didn't sit in the fridge long enough. Also, I think jello today is way sweeter than it was in the 60s.
