Honestly we need more content creators within the Gmod community that do these kinds of historical deep dives. This game is 15 years old and there is *so much* history in the community that having someone sit down and try to tell bits and pieces of its story is great. Keep up the great work!

Here, here. The game is so old that there have been *entire lives* that have began and ended during the lifespan of this game and its community. Community members grew up, graduated high school, went to college, got married, had kids, had a family and a life.....some even passed away over the years. Garry's Mod and the greater Source engine has birthed so much in this world. Honestly, I feel like any Source engine game is the last surviving remnant of a pre-2014 world. Before politics became injected into everyone, before we were all fearful of the future instead of hopeful, before we all were divided....such nostalgia. I remember hardly anything from the Ye Olden Days, as I'll call them, since I was just a kid at the time (born in '02 so I never got the chance to play any Source or Valve games until 2013, when my brother got his first gaming PC), but I can *feel it in my bones* that I yearn for those days. I *miss* those days. But Source engine games help me relive those days, so I can't be thankful enough to Garry and Valve for creating such masterpieces of human engineering :)

There's always been something so special about wandering around someone's custom gmod map. Knowing that every little detail was an individual's conscious decision that you're able to walk around in and interact with. It just feels so incredibly personal and I don't think I've ever really appreciated it as much as I do now.
@stellarr1
@stellarr1 3 жыл бұрын
I think people easily undermine that aspect of a map. Ask any person to walk around the levels of Half Life 2 and it'll be just a game to them but in-reality each level has been perfected by its developers and has had years put into it. Each tool, wall and prop placed and made with hours of work. It's something people just don't notice often though

Here's to all of us that spent countless hours into the night in those early years of 2008-2009, creating mechs or totally whack creations on Construct, seeing how fast we could make that airboat fly in Flatgrass, slapping our friends around with a stunstick on Evocity_v2d, or simply vibing to the beats in the bowling alley of Mobenix. Here's to those years not soon forgotten.

Oh man I remember playing a lot of these maps when they first came out. My friends and I would install stuff through workshop or face punch and join these maps and make up random scenarios. We had one on gm_volcano where we had 1 judge and the rest contestants. We'd go through the duplicates and find something completely random and present it as a product. If the judge didnt like it he'd open the door in the floor.

Just wanna correct some misinfo from this video: Orfkip's maps are not all houses, and gm_atomic's release predates the screenshot you brought up by years. I've played on it in 2011 before Gmod13 and the workshop, and the oldest upload I've found is one on GameBanana from 2009. But these are pretty small details. Overall a good insight into some of the most iconic Gmod maps, and it was great to see Freakrules/SuspiciouslyAwesome give an interview and learn about some of his cancelled projects, as well as seeing the creator of Fork provide some early material. Good video!

Oh, the nostalgia hit hard! I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who's career choice was influenced by gmod/source engine. My case, it all started with connecting a lamp to a button with WireMod some time in 2010. After, I slowly learned how to use E2 and at one point it hit me that it's not much different to "real" programming, and here I am, 12 years later, with a degree in computer science & games development. I remember very fondly the phys_ series maps (phys_house is nearly 15 years old) and spacebuild maps like gooniverse. Don't even get me started on setting up tortoise SVN as a kid and trying to correctly install all of the Spacebuild addons. Some of the oldest maps were simply pulled over from hl2:dm.

In the 711 map, you can turn off HDR in order to fix the lighting on the map. Many maps have issues with HDR lighting.

One thing that is missing from this video is the fact that a lot of these maps had their history way way before the steam workshop. Before the steam workshop was a thing, all of our Garry's Mod content came from garry'smod.org where you could download and manually install maps and addons.
