The story of Love tracks the transformation of folk rock into something more refined without losing its rough edges. Arthur Lee steers this group through many twists and turns as this part one video focuses on their formation and first two albums.

Dennis Wilson flirted with disaster with the Manson family taking over his home after he was lured into bringing a couple of Manson's female followers in for some lascivious fun. He even took a Charlie-written song called "Cease to Exist" and converted it into "Never Learn Not To Love". With some lyrical tweaking and some great harmonies (as always) with a better arrangement, this song is actually pretty good! I love that The Mike Douglas Show had the Beach Boys on when they were promoting their "20/20" album and Dennis got the rare opportunity to be the front man (with Carl sitting in on drums although it may just be miming to a track they recorded earlier with DW on the stool). Brian will always be the greatest songwriter in the band, but Denny put out some great tracks as well and his "Pacific Ocean Blue" LP is by far my favorite solo Beach Boy album. He was definitely a bit more experimental than the other songwriters in the BBs although his greatest song is probably the amazing ballad "Forever". kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ncmgZaRlmJuslaM.html

The Manson family were drug dealers to the rich famous music and film industry types. If you really look into it thats what fueled some of the murders. That and jealousy manson had over his Musical aspirations being spurned after he thought that Dennis Wilson and Terry Melcher were going to help him get a record deal. The house on celio drive where Sharon tate and Abigail folger were murdered was Terry Melchers former residence, he had just moved only a few months prior. Alot of the devil worshipping cult that was bent on an apocalyptic race war narrative, while Manson did use to manipulate his followers, was not the primary cause and was mostly made synonymous with the family through Vincent bugliosi's use of it at the trials.

My favorite band of the 60s! Of course “Forever Changes” is a masterpiece but, the debut, Da Capo, Four Sail, & Out Here are all excellent albums. On a reading note, the drummer Michael Stuart wrote a fantastic book about his time in Love & the Sons of Adam.

Nice job. I just saw Love(Baby Lemonade and Johnny Echols) at the Whisky AGoGo for their venue’s 60th anniversary. They had a four piece orchestra to do “Forever Changes” in its entirety. What a show! I thought “My Little Red Book” and “7 and 7 is” were the highlights. Johnny Echols sang “Signed DC” very well, never my favorite song but great that night . ’“Forever Changes” is probably my all time favorite album. Two days later Robby Krieger played there and it was even better. He’s coming back in July to do “The Soft Parade”. I”ll be there.

I was so fortunate to see Arthur Lee on February 28th 1970 at the Roundhouse London, during his Love Four Sail tour he was in fine form and his band were excellent too! It was a magical gig. Some of his European tour was recorded live too! Also performing that day was The Crazy world of Arthur Brown a real showman 😊

Thanks for featuring Love Matt, one of my favourite bands. I saw the current incarnation of Love with Johnny Echolls recently here in the UK and it was absolutely joyous. Arthur had been at the same venue with the same band a few years ago, and that was someone who I never thought I would see live, and in a small space too. They have always had a following here, and I am sure you will mention that Forever Changes was more successful here, largely due, I think, to the DJ John Peel.

These shows are so good. Thank you sincerely for taking the time it must take. I was 10 in 1968 but I was a very "young" kid. I LOVED The Beatles and mom & dad bought me all of the records but I was more likely to prefer Monkees over Doors at that time, so I never even knew bands like LOVE. I can put myself into my place in time when these things are going on, per your stories. Kind of re-living my youth :) Thanks again.

I never heard of Love. I was a kid when the Laurel Canyon sound was big, and I was a Beatles fan. (You mean there were other groups making music in the 60s???) This is very interesting Matt. Good musical history lesson as always.

First heard about Love while reading No One Her Get’s Out Alive in 1982. Didn’t hear them until I bought Forever Changes cassette in London during Spring Break. Got DaCapo and 1st album a few months later on LP. Each album blew my mind in a different way. Great post!

Growing up in the '70s this band passed me by. I did hear covers of '7 and 7 Is' by The Ramones and Alice Cooper and 'My Little Red Book' by Toni Basil and maybe Manfred Mann. This history of Love is most welcome.

@@markeggins890 Always liked the band Love, I got into them same time as the Velvet Underground ( early 1980's ). Found out recently one of the band members is Maria McKee, ex Lone Justice lead singer. She had a big hit a few decades ago called Show me Heaven. Hell of a singer, fine songwriter

Those first three Elektra albums are terrific and then the next one "Four Sail" was also really good. After that it's much more hit or miss. It's sad to think of them screwing up their career but at least we have their albums. Rock on, Matt!

Matt, I really enjoy your videos, and I’m glad to see this one on Love! I saw Love and Arthur Lee live in 2003 at Royce Hall, UCLA, and it was a fantastic show. He performed every song from the “Forever Changes” album, complete with strings and horns, and the band sounded great.

Thanks for doing a dive into Love, who have been a favorite of mine since I bought the first album at a flea market for a dollar as a 14 year old (because I thought the looked cool on the cover). I agree with you on Revelations which weakens what could have been their best album. Looking forward to Forever Changes and beyond. Arthur Lee looks to have been his own worst enemy. Cheers.

Da Capo was the first LOVE album I ever got as a teen in the 90's. Truly amazing. I agree that Side 1 is excellent. Bright, colorful psychedelic bliss. Simply beautiful. And also agree Side 2 is a wasted opportunity. If only they had more songs like side 1 it'd be an even better classic. If only.

IMO. A big difference between LA and SF bands was that that LA bands tended to make more interesting albums, while SF bands tended to be more oriented towards playing live (and better at it imo). This made SF bands more cohesive and less likely to break up in the short run. I think you can hear the difference on the MP tapes.

My Flash on You is GREAT, that fuzz bass! But yeah, I guess it's my favourite version of Hey Joe 😂 Blown away by this album when I bought it at 15 (in the 80s) and I thought it was like The Byrds clashing with the Stones. I say clashing because of its explosive nature! Absolute top band!!! All you need is LOVE ❤🎶🎶🎶

I was born in 1960 so I was a little girl but I do remember "My Little Red Book" which got alot of airplay on the radio where I grew up (central California). I never knew the name the band until now. I think Arthur Lee's singing voice sounds an awful lot like Thin Lizzy's Phil Lynott, another black man who sound white (actually Phil had an Irish mother).

Thank you for covering this band. A friend turned my head turned my head toward this band. Arthur Lee is one of the more overlooked writers stylistic players of this era. My friend Cliff turned me onto "Forever Changes". I was aware of the singles previous to the release that album but that album convinced me this was something different.

❤Yes, Forever Changes, one of the best albums ever made. Every song on it is great! (Hard to believe it came out so long ago. Summer of '66, was it?) And Arthur has one of the best voices. Younger music fans have a real treat (and surprise) waiting for them when they finally hear it.

Oh, what could have been if Love had played at the Monterey Pop festival. Then again, Arthur Lee might have held out allowing the Filmed performance of the band to make the D.A. This is an excellent band history, Matt! Hearing the Bryan MacLean album ‘Ifyoubelievein’ was a revelation to me. It is quite clear that Arthur aspired to the writing/aesthetic that Bryan brought to the group. Bruce Botnick was absolutely spot on!

Interesting that Stephanie (Stephanie Knows Who) was dating Arthur Lee but later dated Bryan Maclean. The lyrics from Da Capo track “The Castle” contain the line “A I love, B I love, so hard to choose”. Possibly referring to the same scenario?

One of my favorite (lesser known) American sixties band--awesome stuff, Matt. As you may know, Henry Vestine, mentioned near the start of this video, later ended up with what in my opinion was one of the best white blues groups around in the 60s, Canned Heat. It'd be nice to see you cover them at some point.

One of my favorite band ! And I'm hurry to see Part Two because "Four Sail", "Out Here" or solo album 1972 "Vindicator" are great ! And 1971 sessions released on Sundazed "Love Lost" are fantastic ! Loved this. I live in the UK and I'm sure I bought the first three records in the order they were released, I definitely had the 1st one in 1966. I dont think it was an import, well not according to the guy who ran the Left Bank shop in Exeter. To me they never got anywhere near Forever Changes again and although I bought the next 2 or 3 I never played them much preferring to return to the first 3 (minus Revelation). Glad I've discovered this channel, look forward to more.

Orange Skies & She Comes In Colors are amazing. Arthur was a major talent led somewhat astray unfortunately. Still came up with 3 great albums. Band should be in R&R HOF.

Some of the music from that late 60's "folk rock" movement sounds dated and goofy now, but Love holds up very well. They had an artistic, earnest vibe.

This is the first time I came across your channel and I really enjoy your low-key but super informative style of presentation. I'm going to catch Love Pt. 2 ASAP. I'll be sure to subscribe and explore your earlier videos. I'm sure the algorithm saw all the Love thumb ups I've given over the years and I want to thank you for shedding some additional light on their career. I also really liked the fact that The Doors were actually thankful enough for Love getting them signed to Elektra that they deferred and let Love headline gigs that probably should have been theirs to close. It is a rare thing indeed to hear something classy about Morrison & Co. but it's really cool to know.
