I only have one criticism of this video. Did not marriage start way before the 1800's? I would love to know the history dating farther back. I would also love to know the Eastern cultural aspects of marriage.

In the video it's a W.Europe centered viewpoint on a marriage. I've found that the theme was described in the Ruthenian Chronicles (Руський літопис) under the year of 1114. So in the Stone age the man-woman relations were defined as blud/блуд "occasional". In the Copper age there came the kingdom of Svaroh "Heaven" and Svaroh established the couple marriage law shlüb/шлюб "one man - one woman". The sanction for braking the law was cutting the head off. In Ukraine the most developed Copper age culture was Trypillia. The earlier and middle periods of Trypillia date back to 7500-5300 years ago. So in these version we can fix the time and place of the couple marriage appearance - ar. 7500-5500 years ago, Trypillia. There also remained Ukrainian people's songs kolädky/колядки, somewhat like carrols. Ukrainian linguist Potebnya stated their motives had been created in the Trypillian old past. One of the basic kolädky motives is a devoted couple of the man and the woman. The Ruthenian Chronicles (Руський літопис) also gives us the continuation of the couple marriage story. The next (after Svaroh) king Dažďboh went on protecting the couple marriage law. Let's assume the Dažďboh era was at the Early Bronze, the Yamna culture. At the time of Svaroh the tax law also was adopted. The sanction for law brakers was burning in the oven. The couple marriage and the tax laws were, I think, basic for establishing the great urban civilization of Trypillia and the rise of the Indo-European civilization. Consequently the corruption of the couple marriage law/tradition ruins complex societies, institutions, countries, peoples, civilizations.

I don't think anyone gets married so that another person can "fix" them or make them better. That sounds like such a drag actually. I think my husband and I get along best when we respect each other and stay on our own page instead of telling one another what to do. I highly recommend it!

Thing is, we're all different people. Spouses can be on different levels of the hierarchy-of-needs pyramid, either realistically or perceived. One spouse may be on level 3 while the other is on level 5.

Already Thomas Aquinas thought that friendship is maybe the most important thing in the marriage. Bible also makes it pretty clear that the prayers spouses pray together are of huge importance.

It all begs the question (which, judging by the comments here, no one seems to be asking): If one could reduce a complex, multivariate subject like the history of traditional marriage into a three-and-a-half minute one-dimensional political (and quite literal) cartoon, replete with corporate-speak and shallow feminist banalities ("gender stereotypes," "constricting social roles"), what kind of a person would buy into this sort of crap unconditionally? Would it not be best disseminated on KZfaq to an untold multitude of well-intentioned and perfectly misguided disciples?

Marriage was not about contracts, money ,property, child support, spousal support , or lifestyle upkeep., it was about two people coming together under God in order to create a family, raise children, take care of their lands etc. divorce wasn’t accepted norm, today you have more people marrying and divorcing than ever many people marrying and divorcing multiple times and still there is no joy. Also, it’s become a business transaction, people that have money want to make sure they’re not going to part with half of their assets and those that have less or no money are wanting to gain more money and so it becomes a calculating game of who can manipulate the other the best.

Marriage was worthwhile when, back in the day, you married for life. Nowadays, a woman can break up with you for any reason, and get you for alimony and child support if she was a stay at home mother, as well as half your stuff. No thank you.

Marriage.. never mentioned a word about the spiritual, non physical meaning or purpose for it. Karma! Before we decided to come to this planet we decided who we would have in our lives, and most of the time it's to repay karma from a previous life. I know 90% of people have never learned about the non physical reasons and that's ok. Everyone has a right to their own opinion, it's still a free country the last time I checked. Happiness... if people are getting married because someone else makes them happy...ok. The only person that can make you happy is yourself, it's 100% a personal choice. If you think otherwise, you're giving your power away.

I'm struggling to see how we have a doubled divorce rate and yet the best marriages of today are better than the best marriages of earlier eras. Is there a reason you have to subject your audience to such contradictions?

Because the Potential for deep and meaningful relationships has grown over history. However we also need marriage less to survive, so if marriages don't feel meaningful and deep, people often just divorce.

marriage started about 10,000 year's ago when agriculture started! before then we had an alfa male for millions of years same as all other mammals. The reason that nature created alfa male is due to biological reasons to ensure mammals' offsprings are healthier to prevent extinction.
@watching7721
@watching7721 2 ай бұрын
Marriage likely existed in some form long before then, but the first evidence we have of it's existence was when it was formalized with agriculture likely because of a greater need to organize family units. The idea prehistoric humans operated on alpha male hierarchies, from evidence we have, it likely not true for most groups. While it likely did happen at points, evidence generally points to early humans having a variety of social structures and reproductive strategies that go beyond just a dominant male
