We dive into toy history and present Mattels Marvel Secret Wars.
Back in the early 80's Marvel Secret Wars by Mattel came and went pretty quickly. But it did leave quite an impression with it's sometimes weird choice of characters from wave to wave and interesting play gimmicks.

The truth is, I really enjoyed them all... and the widespread marketing scheme made it all a reality. From the pages of much beloved comics to actual toys you can hold and play with, with your imagination being the limit.

I totally agree with you. Like you I really loved these action figures even though they weren’t the best figures out there at the time. What mattered is that they were Marvel Characters and I’ve always been a Marvel fanboy since before I could remember. Overall I’m sure you have find memories playing with and collecting these childhood action figures.

I'd love to see TOY GALAXY revisit the Secret Wars line in an updated video but until then this still does the trick! I've been using the new Marvel Legends Retro 3.75" figures as a Secret Wars dream line and it works nicely. The figures scale great with the old Mattel stuff like the Tower of Doom. You guys rock!

I remember asking my mother for a red and blue Spider-Man as a kid. Because we were living in a small town, I couldn’t be able to find one in our town store. I had Dr Doom, Iron Man, Captain America, Kang or Wolverine, but no Spider-Man. One day, she went to Paris for visiting friends, and what did she brought me ? The Red and Blue Spider-Man. It was nothing, but I was so happy. Secret wars weren’t the best toys, but they were, for us Europeans, the first Marvel toys available, and we were very happy with that. Still have my collection, mostly composed from my childhood ones including Wolverine, Spider-Man, Ironman, Dr Doom, Magneto, Daredevil, Kang, Hobgoblin (complete), Dr Octopus (with his four arms), Captain america and that little unicolor figure (still with its shield) that my parents bought me a long time ago... Iceman

@RubberyCat
@RubberyCat 6 жыл бұрын
No, Magneto was NOT a member of the X-Men, nor had he been at that time. The heroic Magneto were developed partially as a result from secret wars. Also, Beyonder did not see something "good" in Magneto, the difference It saw between the heroes and the villains, was that the Villains had petty and selfish dreams and goals, whereas the Heroes also frequently were ready to put their lives on the line for something far greater than themselves, for ideals, and for people they don't know. Magneto, misguided in methods as he were, still had an ideal greater than himself, about Mutantkind. That's why he was grouped with the Heroes.

I also wanted the Secret Wars toys, but I couldn't get any of them at the time. I was about 4 or 5 years old at the time and I was at a toy store (I think it was Kaybee toy store in a mall) and I wanted to get the Captain America figure. At the time, I thought having two dollars meant that I could buy ANY two toys, so I wanted Captain America and something else (both being more than two dollars). My older sister (about 14 at the time) stopped me and told me that I didn't have enough money and told me to put it back. I then argued with her and told her that I had two dollars (believing I could buy ANY two things I wanted) and that I could get them. We both argued in the store for a good five minutes (with my sister telling me that's not how money works. LOL) until my parents came over and took us out of the store. LOL. I ended up getting that Captain America figure many, many years later on ebay, and I have it sitting in my office. LOL.

For this reason I would conclude that the figure is actually supposed to be Stark and not Rhodes. Mattel didn't seemed too concerned with making sure the figures represented the story accurately, as evidenced by other figures in the line not being in the story itself...

I remember being a kid. I went to the store, and there was a spider-man figure in original costume. I couldn't get is, because grandpa had already bought me a He-Man figure earlier in the day. A few weeks later, we went back to the store. Spider-man was still there, but only black costume available. I was furious. I hated black costume at first, but I bought the toy anyway. Black suit spider-man was better than no spider-man. I grew to love it. These toys were actually fun to play with for my 9 year old self. The Captain America shield was a huge bummer, and I had to use my imagination to compensate. They were superior to the DC characters produced at the time. I loved G.I. Joe because of the articulation. The bendy arms created an alternative to multiple joints.

I don’t care if Mattel’s Marvel Secret Wars was second fiddle to Kenner’s DC Superpowers toyline. As a life long Marvel fanboy (Don’t get me wrong I like DC too) these Marvel action figures were part of my introduction to The Marvel Universe right after Spiderman and His Amazing Friends. Even though they had seriously limited articulation I still loved these guys and I have the fondest memories playing with these figures. When my parents bought me The Spiderman figure I was so freaking happy! After all he is one of my all time favorite Superheroes. I will say that I was pretty bummed out when the last line of action figures didn’t come out. They definitely advertised for it but alas it was never meant to be. As always great video and I look forward to seeing the next one!

As a kid I used to like to pick up Kang figures whenever I spotted them. They were cheap and plentiful in SoCal where I grew up in the late 80s/early 90s. So whenever I'd be in a weird toy outlet store or discount store and find a dozen Kang figures warming pegs for $1 or 75¢ ea I'd pick one up. Eventually I had about 10. So I started to abuse them the way 12 year olds are often want to do. One time my dog bit one of the figures' hands off, leaving it looking like an arm cannon. So I bought some hobby paints and repainted Kang into a Mega Man figure! Too bad I ruined so many Kangs because that collection would be worth a cool $20 today!

I remember I couldn’t wait for the each issue to hit the store. My friends and I would share reading one comic and then play Marvel RPG. Good times.

I remember seeing endless supplies of Kang at KMart when I was a young lad. Also, "pulling them out of their Corporate Cornhole" would have been so much better -- the alliteration!

Can you imagine the same delicate poses but strong physique poses for hulk and thing? Even a juggernaut or in between peter rasputin? Oh my gosh. I wish this line went on.

I had Secret Wars sox as a kid. They came with a comic and each pair had a different guy on them.

If you like Secret Wars, I suggest getting the Marvel Universe Secret Wars Comic Packs; each one comes with a reprint of one of the 12 issues of Secret Wars and action figures of 2 characters who appeared in the series, and they were made recently enough (2009) that they should be reasonably priced.

Good stuff, however Kang didn't appear in the Secret Wars comic. He probably woulda just time warped them back home (it's just a jump to the left, after all.) Maybe you were thinking of Klaw?

I remember this toyline. I was 6-7 years. It liked me. Dr. doom was the best IMO.

I really like that you listed the characters who had their first action figures made in this line! Thank you! What about Dr. Doom? is that his first action figure? If it is not what is his first action figure? Also is there a resource that designates this information somewhere? Thanks for your great content! I look forward to hearing from you soon.

I was the guy that discovered that shield art for those unproduced figures. :) After a successful collaboration on the revelation of the unproduced Super Powers figures (which I was also lucky enough to be the one to find), Jason Geyer and I put together this article revealing everything known about the lost wave of Secret Wars: toyotter.com/2010/11/the-best-kept-secret/
