Chapter three of the CAPCHROMOLOGICAL video series where we look at every single Capcom game in chronological order. This video sets sail to scour the depths to uncover the history of Capcom's third arcade release, Pirate Ship Higemaru.
Fun fact: Momotaru's name is a pun and a portmanteau of the Japanese folklore hero, Momotarou, and "taru" (たる) which means barrel in Japanese. (Thanks KSG-7!)

Honestly, the controls are a little clunky in this one at times and some of the stages get pretty unfair, but it’s pretty interesting. I think the Famicom version is where they really got everything right, but that’s still a few years down the road for this video series. 😅

Another cool video! The game design of Higemaru is very reminiscent of the much older Pengo, by Coreland and SEGA. I never knew about the Famicom sequel! I do like to think that Capcom's Goof Troop is a bit of a spiritual sequel in disguise, however. It's very apparent in the first stages with the pirates walking around single screen areas and you being able to toss barrels at them.

Thank you!! Yeah, Pengo definitely had to be an influence on Higemaru for sure! Higemaru Makaijima is definitely worth a playthrough and it has a fan translation as well. There’s also a bunch of Ghosts ‘n Goblins enemies that make cameos in it which is pretty cool. I’ve had a few other people bring up Goof Troop as being a spiritual sequel in the comments which I had never played. Pretty crazy! I actually added in a part about it that will be in the full “All 1984 Games” compilation video. Thanks for watching man!

i consider myself a capcom fanboy. i have most of their games in all forms and formats and was even a fighters edge member and , living in the states, imported the capcom dual stick console recently. I consider Pirate Ship Higemaru my favorite capcom game of all time, with Don't Pull! being close behind. Pengo is one of my all time favorite games, so it stands to reason this would be right up there for me. Thanks for the History lesson, great video! subscribed!

I would of never known that 3rd Strider boss was from another game. Its also cool that in 2023 its still referenced in other games. The character for SFV looks like he woulda been bad ass. Maybe they will revisit the idea for 6 now. And as always, great video good sir!

Loved the video! One Japanese language point, worth mentioning though - Maru (丸) is commonly added onto the end of ship names. It's true that "maru" does mean round, but that isn't particularly relevant in this case. Higemaru is simply the name of the ship. For a pop-culture example of this, the no-win scenario test in Star Trek revolves around a ship called the "Kobayashi Maru". It's the same naming convention here.

Thank you, glad you enjoyed it and appreciate the info! I had no idea about maru being used at the end of ship names. Also, another commenter pointed out a pun, with Momotaru being a portmanteau of the Japanese folktale hero Momotarou and and the word "taru" which means barrel. Thought was pretty interesting.

I understand its place in Capcom's history, but I really don't need it or Son Son featured in (filling out) any more Capcom compilations. I'd sooner swap them out for Dimahoo. It's unrealistic to expect them to inc a licensed game, but The Punisher's dead now.

To be fair, this video series was created to walk through every single Capcom game in chronological order so I kind of need to include these earlier titles. Trust me though, I've learned very quickly that videos based on Vulgus, SonSon, and Higemaru aren't going to bring in many views.
