A newly written and freshly edited version of my first analysis, an in-depth look at the first Dragon Quest game. What was it that made searching through Alefgard so powerful when the game came out?

One thing that always stood out to me was the amazing quality of the localization for the time. This was still the "CONGLATURATION! YOU AM GREAT GAME PLAY!" era of NES game text, after all.

God I wish Dragon Quest was as huge here as it is in Japan. Would certainly make it far easier for me to collect the merch and further show my support to my favorite RPG series

The original Dragon Warrior is still to this day one of my favorite games to just pick up and play. I have literally played through it's entirety once every couple months since it first released in 89, and I still have fun with it every single time. For me, the fun of the game comes from the progression, aka saving up enough to buy that next piece of equipment or gaining the next spell from a level, or finally becoming strong enough to enter that cave or venture out further, where I thus can reap even more rewards. The sense of gain in this game is very significant, as the numbers are small enough to where every stat point and piece of gold is significant as is every new piece of equipment you buy. It has always given me a large feeling of accomplishment every time I am able to purchase a new weapon or piece of armor. I absolutely love it. It's brilliance lies in it's simplicity and execution.

This is my favorite Role Playing Game series. I have ALWAYS LOVEd RPG's ever since for the very first time I played Dragon Warrior back in 1989, followed by Dragon Warriors' II, III and IV on the original NES Console! I remember back some time in 1992-93 I filled out a little questionnaire saying that I really hope to see a DW V..

Can someone point me in the direction of the Shonen Jump Dragon Quest tutorial comic thing?

DQ reminds me of Zelda in a lot of ways. It's not the first JRPG and did not invent most of its mechanics but it was the first popular example so it's rightfully praised for its influence and general innovation. In spite of not being 100% original it did put these things in a digestible package that caught on. Similarly, The Legend Of Zelda was not the first action RPG and didn't invent the top down dungeon crawl thing but it popularized it and the influence of Zelda on the action adventure RPG genre is far more pervasive than Hydlide or any other early action RPG title you could name. Without Zelda and Dragon Quest where the hell would RPGs be now? I don't know. Probably like Wizardry or Ultima. Those would likely have been the standard. I don't like a world without the current wide range of RPG sub-genres. I'm very grateful for these early games. They're incredibly important.
