Күн бұрынHey guys, in this video I cover the history of space station 13, often abbreviated, SS13. One of my favorite games of all time and basically the thing keeping the BYOND platform afloat. We begin in 2003 with Exadv1, the creator of SS13 who would be inspired by other games like Spacetug and Ridley Scott's famous film Alien. What was once a simple atmospherics simulator has through the years become a cult classic with incredible depth and complexity. I'll go through the years up to today. I know that I missed a lot of stuff, but it would be impossible to cover every servers history and drama in one video. Should this video find success, I will reach out to the various codebases and try to get a more in depth history from each of them, making videos on each if they allow me to.
This video mainly focuses on the major codebases such as /tg/, Bay12 and goonstation but also mentions servers like Lifeweb, IS12 and World Server.

I started on BestRP right before they started burning and didn't stay very long, and eventually ended up on Unbound Travels (That's the NSS Phoenix for those who do or do not remember it.) Thanks for this, and if you ever make a history on UT, I'd be a happy spaceman.

Oh man you are so right I still remember my first time being antag I was blood brother and my bb did all our objectives while I just ran around playing rat and mouse with one of the botanist for killing his botanist partner My bb even got cap's spare ID and gave me AA. When we were in the shuttle, we entered the room for the heads and just chatted on how easy that was, while the botanist kept on shouting at us for killing his partner Then when the shuttle landed, we tried to kill the botanist but got beat up by the botanist instead.

I got into SS13 only recently, and it's tied with TF2 as my favourite game of all time. You just can't beat 2 decades of community involvement and support.

Heh, video popped up on my recommended. I do have to thank you for making a video to preserve the history of this great game. I may be from the Seth tide or at least think I am, but I’ve come a long way in bettering each round by keeping the station together in the few servers I hop around on. Engineering and medical are my preferred departments as I hope to keep the station ticking, max cap or not.

You know that one of admins hosts of tgstation was instrumental in getting the idea of ASMR recongized. I think he was on the wiki page for it. That stonedone I think

I could have sworn that there was no nuke ops that early into development, I remember playing back almost at the beginning and definitely don't remember it having any nuke ops mode. The only way to completely destroy the station was to load all the plasma canisters into an escape pod and eject them all onto one square with a bomb on top of the stack. This would massively increase the power of the explosion often to the point there would be no tiles left, just empty space. The player who either discovered or popularized this technique was called Dwarf and so it was called a Dwarf-bomb.

Most rounds were put on secret which randomly select from extended, traitor, meteor, and monkey. I played a lot of security officer back then (because most jobs had nothing to do) so I remember at the start of each round trying to guess and prepare for whatever mode it was.

This was a great video! I will admit the Ssseth video is what drove me to finally play the game after offhandedly hearing about it from 2 of my friends. After playing for a while Im really curious what a Hotline Miami server would look like.

I used to play late 2006 till early 2007, I had no idea what I was doing back then other than bashing people in with toolboxes and abusing them in secret rooms made with sliding walls. Although I did manage to host my own server at one point for a short period using precompiled code someone sent me, version I still have is "spacestation13v40[1][1].93.2" dated August 24th 2005. I started playing again a few months ago, and I still have no idea what I'm doing, but enjoy just fucking about as much as possible whilst trying not to get banned....

good shit, a pretty clean documentary considering the absolute insanity required to describe a quarter of ss13 and its history. watching this, im fucking livid i didnt find this game sooner and got stuck in MRP when i did, but at least i found it. great game, wasnt expecting lifeweb or is13, keep it up

This was a very nice and detailed video compared to everything else I've seen thus far great work. For future projects I'd suggest looking into Space Station 14 on Steam. It looks like an attempt to massively update the platform to a new status. However, I'm very concerned about SS-14 as I posted a steam discussion asking if the game would force all code-bases to be open source and a developer said it will not. I really would like it if you could mention this in a future video and highlight the need for this title to force servers to be open source, whenever a code-base hoards it's code the game overall is left weakened so I feel it's vital to the success and fun of all that code-bases remain open for grabs in case anyone wants anything or if a bad server needs to be replaced. We saw how every time the Goon's were forced to release their code it improved the game as a whole. Keep up the good work, and by the way if you want to gain more viewers you could try playing SS-13 yourself and posting some game-play videos. I think a lot of people are looking for a quality SS-13 story teller. Thank you for reading this if you got this far.

Yeah I’ve been watching ss14 closely. As someone who does a decent amount of devwork on ss13 I can see arguments for both. The game def thrives when code is shared but it also can devalue servers. It really sucks when you try to make a neat thing, secret or hide an item and people just read your prs and rush them defeating the purpose. As for gameplay vids, this channel is more for me to infodump stuff I’m into reading at the time. Not sure I’ll be the one to fill that niche lol

I remember reading about Xenomorph gamemode on some ЛКИ (or Best Computer Games, from russian) journal, where i got genuenly interested, but back then internet wasn't really available. Then i got into the game about a year before Sseth video, which was also my first Sseth video i saw.

I see you got most of your info from wiki.ss13.co/History_of_SS13 and tgstation13.org/wiki/The_history_of_SS13😸 It's also important that Goonstation was not based off of OpenSS13, but in fact the original source code of SS13 by way of AZA's release. Also, there's the most recent 'streamer tide' prompted by streamers such as Criken and TomatoGaming.

Yeah I mentioned criken briefly at the beginning. Was not aware of tomato. Seth has got to be the biggest to ever come to the game tho. And yes those wikis were a big resource for me for sure. I also used lots of old reddit posts, SA threads, personal experience and talking to some people I play SS13 with. Its why I would like to talk to teams from the big codebases to learn how they came to be.

I haven't added to the 'streamer tide' of new players but I really enjoy knowing about the silly stories players have in the game through videos from Bill Steven, Melbert, BlackPantsLegion, Livrah, Naloac, Shoefoot and more I haven't realized I keep clicking on in the reccomended videos pile...

SCP13 was so sad to see go. Fuck Lion that prick. Also, it was a sad server near the end, there wasn't many players to fill the slots. So it would be 6 people and that's it. I enjoyed being a dclass guard, but most people spawned as dclass, didn't get experimented on, tried to fight a guard. Got shot and killed. Left the server forever. I wonder if there could be a singleplayer ss13 experince made for SCP

I really need to play more Space Station 13... I'm mostly playing Space Station 14, a remake on a better engine (not taking sides, its just a fact) because SS14s client side prediction is a live saver for a EU player trying to play in US servers (which most seem to be...).

I was whole heartedly expecting the dumbass *New player = Bad* and everyone losing their shit. Glad to see that it wasn't too bad. I tried to play this game a few times, and i really want too. Man, i just have no idea what i am doing and people keep yelling at me lol. I went there to try and make friends, but, all i got was yelled at for starting a robot revolution....

I tried for some time to get information out of places like tg, goon or lifeweb but had a hard time finding people who were both willing to speak to me and able to provide any actual history.

15:18 It isn't a proper explanation of the history of SS13 without SSeth being mentioned. I saw the video much later than its upload, and decided to give it a spin. I stuck with it since, playing it when I feel like I'd enjoy it. I did. I really did. I probably would not have laughed as hard as I did watching SSeth's video, nor even harder after the events of the games I played firsthand, if SSeth's video was never made, nor if I had never seen it. So, maybe the SSethtide wasn't entirely bad after all. I know "nobody cares" and "Who asked" is what's awaiting this comment, but I figured I'd at least put it out there, even if it's met with hatred and heartlessness.

In my opinion, the quality of the game has dropped significantly since the tides started arriving. The game peaked around 2013-2014 and has since been taken over by ERPers and furries. Idk play lifeweb if you still wanna enjoy good SS13

If there’s any major changes I would like to see to SS13 it would be an easier, more usable interface that isn’t “only playable because me and my autistic friends committed the hot keys to muscle memory” I can’t tell you just how frustrating, and comedic it was to repeatedly beat my friend to death with a first aid kit, trying to heal him, all the while clumsily trying to maneuver the left/right hand and storage systems. Or in my immortal words: *”HOW WAS I SUPPOSED TO KNOW YOU NEEDED TO “oPeN tHe hEaLtH kiT” I JUST THOUGHT I COULD JUST CLICK ON YOU TO HEAL YOU?!”* “Can I not just click and drag?” *”At least in Minecraft you just press a number key or the R&L bumper to switch between items!. None of this “clicking back and forth between your backpack and hands” bullshit”* “So wait, the health kits themselves don’t heal you, they contain the stuff that heals you, right?… Then why can’t you just transfer the stuff *from* the med kit directly into your inventory, *rather* than …[pick up med kit …transfer to R or L hand …open med kit …transfer healing item to backpack …remove med kit from R or L hand …transfer healing item to R or L hand]”

Learning how to use your hands is one of the biggest learning curves, but it is necessary for the depth of the game and how the player interacts with playfield objects. I wish you luck, spaceman
