The nice thing about these fictional wrestling rosters, is that you don't feel bummed out when you go to fire up the game all these years later.

Konami's The Main Event for the arcade has an "enthusiastic" announcer/commentator that goes on throughout the matches via voice samples. It's pretty impressive for 1988. They ended up using the same hardware for TMNT, Aliens, Super Contra, Gradius 3 and some others.

Best wrestling game on the NES. Just a note on the button mashing: the game is designed so that turbo controllers won’t work, but there’s a way around that. I used my NES Advantage, which had adjustable turbo, so during the training segments I would turn down the turbo until the game would accept the input. I’d end up with a bunch of the circles filled, and the turbo was then perfectly tuned to pull off moves during matches as well. Also much easier on the thumbs :)

Having sold off my NES and most of my collection in 2011 (huge mistake), I now have only three of my original NES carts from childhood, and TECMO Super Bowl is one of them! I have never been very good at it, but as a passionate wrestling fan I have to appreciate all of this great depth. It's the only 8-bit wrestling game with alternate pins like the bridging German suplex or the power bomb where you hold on. It's one of only 2 NES wrestling games with submissions, including some holds we really weren't seeing in the states at the time, at least not on TV, like the octopus stretch. The music is strong, adding some emotional depth to the experience.

In North America, this game had no rival. It was the spiritual successor to the old Pro Wrestling and no game came close. In Japan, it had to contend with the arrival of the 16bit Fire Pro series on PC-Engine and couldn't compete. I loved this game so much as a kid. I made some of the earlier Fire Pro models for SFPWX Premium and the GBC game. Heck, I started a FPW ring management mode game using Tecmo World Wrestling and narrated the first couple of "years" on a forum. I also made some for the more recent FFPW but I was quickly outclassed by people using more recent custom moves and smoother custom parts. I stand by my head cannon for their backstories, though.

I rarely tired of the good wrestling games, and this one had slipped by....and the NES still had plenty of life left for me! I played this one quite a bit, perhaps until the end of 1993. A true classic, but by far most enjoyable against a friend. Even using an NES Advantage at max turbo I still struggled to win with any consistency in single player. It's so odd that Tecmo abandoned the genre after what I assume must have been solid success with this game.

There are submission finishes in this game. I've done them on two player. And they're actually really cool, especially with the commentary.

I think Bass, Tina, & la mariposa (the butterfly) from the doa fighting game series have wresting outfits that say tecmo. This might be a possible reference to this game

"Fighter Hayabusa" I could never land the back brain buster....lol. You old guys know EXACTLY what im talking about. Super Tecmo Bowl is THE best sports game ever on the NES period. The best part of the game no one mentions is the game kept your season stats. Pass yards, rush yards. I always tried to have at least 1000 rushing yards per the season.

I once played this game and something very weird happened that I have not been able to re-create. I was just putzing around beating up my opponent well past the point where I could have pinned him, and from out of nowhere, the commentator says something along the lines of oh no- what is this.. his opponent is not moving... somebody get some help! And just like that, the match was over! I tried multiple times to get it to happen again, but no luck. I know this sounds unbelievable, but I swear this happened.

A friend of mine was big into this game, and when I finally got it, it was all he would ever play when he came over, and a lot of times he would hog the NES just to play this game. I eventually traded it off just to aggravate him, and he found another way to annoy me on a completely different game. Sometimes, a guy just can’t win.
