I have not commented for some time, but this was a great video as always. As for the ring, I think it was Tolkien's metaphor for temptation and how something seemingly small that we think we could master could ultimately master us and lead to our undoing. It happens all the time in real life. What tempts us becomes the source of our idolatry.

I'm pretty sure Tolkien himself confirmed that Sauron had the Ring with him in Numenor. In a letter he addressed how the Ring survived the drowning of the island.

In order to counter the notion that The Lord of the Rings was inspired from World War II, Tolkien himself provided a "what if" scenario in the Foreword to The Fellowship of the Rings that shows what would happen should the Ring be used against Sauron. Tolkien explained that if he had WWII in mind, then the Free peoples would enslave Sauron with the power of the Ring against him, and occupy Mordor. Saruman (whose treachery would remain secret) would then use the Ring-Lore found in Mordor to create a Great Ring of his own with which to challenge the self-styled Ruler of Middle-Earth.

"It is a strange fate that we should suffer so much fear and doubt, over so small a thing." The one piece of jewelry everyone wanted but no one could keep for long. Makes me wonder why Tolkien chose a ring; why not a crown or sword or pendant or mail? Would have been easier to hold on to I think 🤔😂 But I would not trust myself to bind my whole being and power to this one thing. Lose my keys all the time I'd b done in no time.

In Norse mythology, a ring cursed by a dwarf was retrieved from a dragon hoard by a hero. There are real rings in museums with magic runic inscriptions. Jewish religious texts tell of Solomon's ring which sealed genies into bottles, among other powers. There was a tale of a ring found in a cave which granted invisibility millennia before Tolkien's and folklore in many different cultures had the concept of magic rings.

@@thorr18BEM Correct, it was inspired by the gold ring of Andvari, cursed by the Dwarf to bring ruin to all who make contact with it after Loki stole all of his wealth to pay the Dwarf Hreidmarr for accidentally killing one of his sons and then demanded the ring as well. It would then be stolen by Hreidmarr's other son, Fafnir, after Fafnir killed him. He then transformed into a dragon to guard it but he would then be slain by Sigurd who was hired by the last remaining son of Hreidmarr, Regin, to slay Fafnir but Sigurd then killed Regin and took it for himself as well. Sigurd would go on to betray his own brother Gunnar by disguising himself as Gunnar to seduce the Valkyrie Brynhild who then had him killed after the deception was revealed. She then takes it and forces the cursed ring onto Gunnar's hand before committing suicide. Gunnar would go on to be executed by Atli, Brynhild's brother, after he marries Sigurd's first wife Gudrun but not before Gunnar flings the cursed ring into the river Rhine where it lays still. Atli, Gudrun, and all of their children meet unpleasant ends as well, finishing off all those who got close to the cursed golden ring.

My guess is from the story Völsungasaga that has in it the Ring of the Nibelungs . Which depicts the tale of a cursed ring that is the oldest artefact from a treasury guarded, deep in a cave, by the dragon Fafnir. In the tale it's said that whoever takes a piece of the treasure from the vault, and keeps it, will be cursed to die if he or she will not bring it back. Everyone who wanted to claim the treasure for themselves died and the person who slained Fafnir took the ring of the Nibelungs, as it's first piece of treasure and as a sign of ownership to it. It's a number good tales that depicts the story of the end of Norse Mythology for the Northern Kingdoms and the transition to Christianity and how the to religions clash between one other and how the people who believed in the old ways struggle to keep the traditions of the ancestors while the ones who embraced Christianity try to convert them.

The story of the One Ring showcases so amazingly the significance of Tolkien's story. The ring is always the same, and inherently evil. It can never be used for good, and the more you try, the closer and closer you get to corruption, eventually and inevitably succumbing to it. All the different locations the ring ends up in, the different ringbearers that carry it, and the adventures that allow for these fantastical stories are not only wondrous, but highlight brilliantly how different people act in regards to power, making we reflect upon human nature. And in the end, even though no one is strong enough to voluntarly destroy the ring and abdicate the hunger for power, this same hunger is what ultimately brings upon the ring the same fate it sought to bring upon the entire world: destruction.

I think one thing to remember is that Isildur was actually on the way to see Elrond about the ring, to ask what he should do with it, when he was attacked and killed
@stephensmith3111
@stephensmith3111 2 жыл бұрын
Uhm, no. In the final section of "The Silmarillion": Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age, Professor Tolkien writes: The Ruling Ring passed out of knowledge even of the Wise in that age; yet it was not unmade. For Isildur would not surrender it to Elrond and Cirdan who stood by. They councilled him to cast it into the fire of Orodruin nigh at hand, in which it had been forged, so that it should perish, and the power of Sauron be forever diminished, and he should remain only as a shadow of malice in the wilderness. But Isildur refused this council , saying 'This I will have a weregild for my father's death and my brother's. Was it not I that dealt the Enemy his death-blow?' And the Ring that he held seemed to him exceedingly fair to look on; and he would not suffer it to be destroyed. Taking it therefore he returned at first to Minas Arnor, . . . he bore away the Ring, to be an heirloom of his house, and marched north from Gondor by the way that Elendil had come; and he forsook the South Kingdom, for he purposed to take up his father's realm in Eriador, far from the shadow of the Black Land. Next follows a lengthy paragraph on how Isildur was betrayed by the Ring and killed by Orcs, but this reply has gone on long enough. He was not going to council again with Elrond. There were only three survivors of the attack. One was Ohtar, his esquire, who had the shards of Narsil in his keeping, and who did eventually find his way to Rivendil and turned them over to Elrond. Although it is not specifically written here, I think that Isildur would have kept these himself, also.

@@vettethewarlock5448 Thank for this information. I have a copy of "Unfinished Tales", but I had not read it cover to cover, including the chapter on The Disaster of the Gladden Fields. It does indeed provide a more sympathetic narrative concerning Isildur's betrayal and death and also of Ohtar taking the shards of Narsil to Valandil in Imladris. I would probably say just as bad, or worse. It is theorized that the Watcher in the Water which attacked the Fellowship as they entered Moria is one of these Nameless things. And seeing as these beings have no real description of what they are, they could be any number of monsterous entities.
@istari0
@istari0 2 жыл бұрын
It would be hard for them to have gone worse seeing as Durin's Bane brought down Khazad-dûm, the greatest dwarven kingdom. The balrog was a maia, a class of powerful beings that included Sauron, Gandalf, and Saruman among others. Whatever the Nameless things were, there's no reason to think they were close to that powerful. But it still could have gone badly for the dwarves.

"If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world." -- Thorin II "Oakenshield", a.k.a. Professor J. R. R. Tolkien The old saying is that money is the root of all evil, and it can indeed be the catalyst, but is more the desire in the mind of Men (and Ainur) for power and dominion where evil really becomes manifest and causes the problems. There is a version that calls itself the golden rule: he who has the gold makes the rules. I prefer the other version (Matthew 7:12).

@TheSaneHatter
@TheSaneHatter 2 жыл бұрын
That would have made it possible for Ulmo or Osse to pick it up via the ocean waters, I suspect. That, in turn, raises multiple possibilities. On the one hand, Osse might have been tempted or corrupted by it, having been lured into Morgoth's service at one point before. Or he might have known better this time, in which case we might still come around to the other possibility: that Ulmo, most stalwart of Morgoth's foes, would have gotten it, taken it back to Valinor, and left Sauron's soul helpless in the hands of the Valar. Sauron would have been truly screwed at that point.
@jamesfrost2399
@jamesfrost2399 2 жыл бұрын
Most likely the Ring would have lain forgotten forever, with the Valar being unwilling to intercede in events outside of Valinor. Sauron would have continued slowly grinding down the resistance of the Free Peoples until he conquered all Middle Earth through military force.

Originally the One Ring would be used to control (by telepathy) 19 elves with rings that (originally) had the function of warding off the effects of the passage of time (preservation of Arda's physical structure). But the elves noticed Annatar's action, and Sauron departed for a "Plan B - access the Morgoth ingredient present in physical matter to control: a) biological matter: All living things (composed and fed by matter) have some Morgoth ingredient. In this way, the power to corrupt rational creatures (Harad, Rhûn, Númenor) and animals is made possible by the One Ring that makes manifest the activity of this demonic energy (think of temptation in Christian theology as an analogy); b) inanimate matter: volcanic eruptions (Orodruin), control the weather (like Sauron did with the storm of lightning and hail at Emyn Muil in the Two Towers), earthquakes and other natural phenomena. c) the 9 Nazgûl: with the control of the 9 men by the One, Sauron must have launched great dynasties in the south and east of Middle-earth, as these 9 mighty men seemed to live forever, became invisible and were blessed by a god of fire who bestowed wealth, power and glory. d) with the One Ring's control of the 7 rings: Sauron had no direct control over the dwarves, but the 7 dwarven rings and the effect of the dwarves' increased greed ended attracting monsters: Balrog, dragons of the north,Smaug, Scatha, etc. e) Phylactery? f) Control the orcs, trolls, Wargs and other monster (dnd 5e - 9 lv. dominate monster?) Sauron made the One Ring to access the powers of the Flame of Udun. But for that, Sauron had to follow the logic of the Full Metal Alchemist equivalent exchange: What would you sacrifice of yourself to have dominion over Arda?

Sauron's biggest mistake was the form of the ring. If he'd made it a cockring instead, no one else would have wanted to wear it and, anytime anyone put on one of the other rings, he'd have gotten a tugger.

You mention Isildur was slain with the one ring, and said ring fell into the river of Anduin after his death, but what if Isildur survived his encounter? What if, even if for one last time, Isildur's will overcame the corruption of the ring and he was able to reach his destination alive? With the location of the ring not yet lost, would Sarumon have made a move for the ring sooner? Or perhaps his good would have still remained at this point, and he would not fall to corruption?

The Rings of Power were Sauron's botched plan. The One Ring was his Achillies's heel, because while he could come back after having his body destroyed, the destruction of the One Ring would essentially meant his permanent end. As for his reason for creating the Rings of Power, Sauron wanted to control the main Races of Middle Earth. But he only made rings to control Humans and Dwarves. The Eleven rings were crafted by the Elves themselves without Sauron's assistance, so they could not be used to corrupt and control that race. As for the other rings, Sauron failed to control the Dwarves with the rings he gave them. So in the end, it gave the World a way to be rid of him forever in exchange for controlling only the race of men...and on that point, once the men who had those rings turned into wraiths and ceased being the leaders of the lands they ruled, Sauron did not even have the ability to control men.

Was it ever made clear in Tolkien's writings that Sauron wore the ring to the Star Isle? It would seem that it would have been lost forever in the midst of the Great Sea along with Sauron's body and the bodies of all that remained in Númenórë. I don't think Sauron's spirit could have transported the corporeal ring back to Middle Earth. Hadn't he left it behind in Barad Dûr before he surrendered himself to the King? I seem to recall Tolkien writing that Sauron's "spirit returned to Mordor, and he took up again his great ring" but I can't recall if this was part of the story of the Downfall or of one of his earlier returns to Mordor after a defeat.

Tolkien had conflicting writings at different times on whether or not Sauron brought the One to Númenór. But if he did take the One to Númenór, I'm sure he could bring the Ring back with him. In our own ghost stories, there are poltergeists that can affect physical objects. Sauron was a mighty spirit and the link between him and the Ring was very close.

Question: Why didn't Sauron craft rings for Hobbits? If Eru's vision truly went as far as the end of the third age, wouldn't the valar have seen Frodo (or rather, Gollum) destroy the ring? It would seem logical that if Sauron did, he would have sent his army to hunt down both the Fellowship and Gollum

I would think Sauron did not take the ring to the island. It would be too risky, as he was a captive, and with the death of his last body in the destruction, it would have been lost. The ring remained in Mordor. The ring was useful for controlling minds and elves en masse, but for deft persuasion in the ear, it would not be needed.

@4:20 I sincerely doubt Sauron ever took that ring off once it was placed on his hand. The sleepless malice and will/desire to dominate the world was just too great to ever let go, even for Sauron who use to be a servant of good. I'd say that Sauron surpassed his master in this though as his master never thought to dominate the minds of the leaders of the free peoples.

The whiny fan in me will always harp the same questions; if Sauron had the Ring in Numenor, which I believe he did, how did he get it back to Mordor? Did he walk across all of Middle Earth, from the Grey Havens to Barad-dur, or circle around the now spherical world, through lands we know next to nothing of, and enter Mordor through its eastern side? If this was possible, and divine intervention left his spirit functional, why didn't he linger near Isildur, and claim his Ring when the king was slain? Still, I think my biggest quandary will be if Sauron was restored enough to manifest a presence in Mirkwood, why couldn't he sense the Ring being used close by? Gollum had it for centuries, and while he maybe didn't actually use it as often as he could have, I assume he did, as did Bilbo, yet it never triggered his sense? Maybe it wouldn't flag its location, and so he knew SOMEONE had it, but it seems like he was oblivious. I assume the true reason is because, when the Hobbit was written, it might've just been a magical ring, and not THAT Ring, but once decisions were made to unite the two, a reason should have been figured out, but I don't know it. Why was there a "free period" where the Ring didn't advertise its use to Sauron, while Gollum or Bilbo had it. Gandalf told Frodo never to put it on, but Gollum and Bilbo, even right next to Dol Guldur, were "fine". We're the Nazgul destroyed with the One Ring, or merely lost and trapped into the Unseen World? Was there a reason the plan of the One Ring failed so hard? Were most of the Rings still in a box, or on the fingers of various elves, and if that, why did every one of them manage to take of their rings? I can get if the likes of Galadriel could, but if 16 "other" elves all managed, I'd think Sauron could've planned things better.

Tolkien wrote that one of the reasons the Ring did not have a worse effect on Bilbo was because Bilbo was merciful and did not kill Gollum. So, the Ring may have ended up corrupting Bilbo if he kept it long enough but I also suspect Gandalf would have noticed something seriously wrong with him.

He offered them as a reward to the dwarves of Erebor for information about where Bilbo and the Shire might be found. The dwarves told Sauron's emissary they would have to think about then sent their own emissary to what would end up as the Council of Elrond. I don't believe the dwarven rings come up again and once the One was destroyed all the others lost all their power so they become nothing more than jewelry at that point, assuming they weren't destroyed when Barad-dûr fell.

There's a line Gandalf says to Frodo in Fellowship of the Ring that basically goes that Bilbo was meant to find the ring and not by its maker and that means Frodo was also meant to have it. So, I would say that means it wasn't the Ring that chose the hobbit.

What I have always wondered about Sauron, is with him being once an Elf, is he is tie to Arda severed? Seeing as how the elves of Middle Earth are tied to the land, granting them the ability to never die so long as Arda still exists, does that mean that, even after physically being slain and having his Ring destroyed, he would eventually come back, as all elves do?

@@CrunchyFluids I'm not sure. From what I've heard (so take this with a grain of salt) Melkor/Morgoth will return in the prophesied Dagor Dagorath, so perhaps Sauron may also. Or not. In "The Silmarillion", following the destruction of the Ring, Professor Tolkien writes: Then Sauron failed, and he was utterly vanquished and passed away like a shadow of malice; This is getting way out of my wheelhouse here.

The only maia we see return after being slain is Gandalf and he was sent back by Eru Ilúvatar. I don't think Tolkien ever described what exactly happened to other slain maia. They couldn't die permanently but Sauron was so weakened he could never be more than an impotent spirit. I suspect the same happened to Saruman as the description of what happened to his spirit when his body was slain in the Shire is fairly similar to the description of what happened to Sauron. At a guess, the same fate befell the balrogs. None of them are spoken of as appearing in Valinor again.
