Depatie-Frieleng was the animation studio that created the animated titles credit sequence for the first Pink Panther movie, taking the concept of the pink panther shape inside the diamond and making it a cartoon character, and audiences at the theater laughed so hard during the credits that United Artists comissioned Depatie -Freleng to produce more animated shorts with the pink panther character to be shown before the UA movies in theaters (for example a James Bond movie in the sixties had a pink panther cartoon attached during the coming attractions), soon after tv networks bought the cartoons and made a pink panther show for tv and Depatie-freleng created more characters for the show like the Inspector and the ant etc. So in the movie "universe" the pink panther is just the diamond, in the cartoon universe the pink panther is the actual character.

Strikes Again is my favorite. That Cato fight with the slow motion nunchuck to the face and subsequent slow motion "AAARRRGGHH!" is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. And then it's followed up with someone tripping over Dreyfuss' periscope, causing him to slow motion fall and another slow motion "AARRRGHHH!" Absolutely hilarious!

It's a very funny movie, with a great cast to go along with Niven and Sellers (and which led to a spin-off movie. "The Cheap Detective, with Peter Falk reprising his role in "Murder by Death". I'm Alan Jones and I took over as editor on 'Return of...' and became full editor on 'Strikes Again' - 'Revenge' and 'Trail' so I do know a bit. Too many little points to go into with this history but I will say that Peter became more and more difficult to work with and that Blake had suggested making a slightly different 'Trail' to Peter who refused to be involved. Blake believed this was Peter just being contrary and not wanting Blake (and him) to make easy money. I always felt 'Trail' should have been made as a tribute to the Peter Sellers Clouseau character and not as an introduction to new inept detectives but Blake had been so frustrated by Peter that he wanted to prove he could do it without him.....which he couldn't.

The original Pink Panther films hold a special place in my heart for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the talent involved. It's also a part of family history - sort of. My parents had just gotten married in June of 1965 and were on their way to Niagara Falls. On the long drive, they decided to see a film playing at the drive in: "A Shot in the Dark". They loved it!! They were fans of the series ever since!! Dad introduced me to the film series when they cam along in the 70s and 80s and we laughed uproariously! Whenever one of the original films comes on, I sit down to watch. I saw the attempts to continue the series (Trail of the Pink Panther, Curse of the Pink Panther and Son of the Pink Panther) and while they weren't too bad, nothing will ever come close to the genius of Peter Sellers and Blake Edwards.

So glad you're talking about these films because this will generate interest in the older movies if some younger viewers have only seen the more recent Clouseau stuff. It's my favorite comedy movies franchise, but I only include the ones with Sellers in this group. For me, the best films of the series (with Sellers) include Return of, Strikes Again, and Revenge Of. I suppose I like them silly. The more disguises, the better. And I suspect we shall never see cinematic comedy like this ever again; these films take sequences and do them with long careful takes and with cleverly composed choreography. The pacing is often almost languid but it makes things all the more funny. You just don't see this kind of comedy movie-making today. Maybe it's because of audience attention spans, although I can't be sure. I can't remember the last recent comedy film I enjoyed that had long takes, and big gaps of silence as parts of the gags. The Peter Sellers Pink Panther movies make me laugh every single time I watch them. There's at least one skirmish between Kato and Clouseau where at one point we go into slow motion ... but we also get to *hear* everything in slow motion; that is genius. It's so funny.

Wahey! I've been rewatching the *DePatie-Freleng **_Inspector_** cartoons* recently, so this is a nice surprise! 😁 I adore all the Sellers films, but _A Shot In The Dark_ is, without a doubt, one of my favourite movies of all time. _Strikes Again_ is a close second. Cripes, even seeing the footage with just your voiceover has me in stitches. XD Thank you for this.

You cant have pink panther without peter sellers he made them films his own and no one can replace him either, one of my favorite comedy icons of all time. He became more funnier in shot in the dark than in the pink panther and continued to become funnier as each film went on.

A perfect example of what you are saying is the attempt to keep The Three Stooges going after the death of Curley. Could you imagine Laurel with a different Hardy or ANYONE trying to replace W.C.Fields?

Love Sellers/Clouseau. I enjoy them all on a level, but A Shot in the Dark is a masterpiece. The next three made with Sellers are enjoyable on a slowly descending scale.

That about sums it up for me too. The more broad and heavy-handed the slapstick got, the sillier the whole concept became. In ASITD, you can at least conceive of Cluseau as a really dim cop who probably got promoted beyond his capabilities, but after that there's no possible human match for the cartoon caricature.

For me, the only two really great entries were The Pink Panther and A Shot In the Dark. "Return" was ok, but I hated the rest of them with Sellers. Way too broad. I didn't bother with any of the post-Sellers films.

The Pink Panther is one of my favourite film series. Peter Sellers is simply fantastic. None of the continuity makes sense, in later films we see that the former Mrs Clouseau is still in a relationship with The Phantom but where was she in The Return of the Pink Panther? Personal fav from this era is Strikes Again, very absurd but some fantastic gags. Revenge never really hit the mark for me for some reason but it’s still a classic. Looking forward to part 2 to hear what you think about the Blake Edwards reboot attempts. Roger Moore’s cameo is the only highlight.

I can relate to your experience. I was surprised about its absence from the boxed set; I bought the boxed set of Clouseau movies, with the squishy/shiny black cover, years ago (a collection which MGM was unable to call "The *Complete* Pink Panther Set") ... but because of studio rights I had to buy the "Return of the Pink Panther" disc separately.

it is weird how all it takes is "we thought we could replace the director and actor and then call the movie Inspector Clouseau" to sully that name ever being used as a title again, even when it makes much more sense. Studios are so sensitive to that kind of thing, especially when it's their own doing.

Peter Ustinov had accepted the role on the basis that Ava Gardner was to be his screen wife. When Miss Gardner dropped out and was replaced by another, Ustinov withdrew. There was litigation for breach of contract as a result but Clouseau had to be recast at short notice. Thus Sellers was cast and made the role his own.

Catherine Schell's character in Return is actually Clouseau's wife from the first film. She ran off with the Phantom in Pink Panther, and here she is still with him in Return. Weirdly, Clouseau doesn't recognize her, but she apparently does.

@@Olya290795 It must be the same characters. The actress from the first Pink Panther came back with David Niven's character in Trail of the Pink Panther. Catherine Schell is addressed as Lady Litton in Return. I can't see David Niven running around with a mistress for one film and going back to his wife right after it. It's just more weird continuity from a film series full of odd stuff like that.

This is one of my favorite film franchises I was first introduced to the series with the animated shorts when they aired on Boomerang, and unfortunately the 2006 remake and then I discovered the old films and started watching them and I loved them, it’s sad how the series fell from grace after Peter Sellers’ death but I feel like there were some missed opportunities while they were making Curse of The Pink Panther they wanted the series to be the comedic answer to the James Bond series and that’s the way I see it.
