The History of the University of Glasgow

A brief history of one of the finest universities in the world: the University of Glasgow. From humble 15th century beginnings when lectures took place in either the Chapter House of Glasgow Cathedral or the Chapter House of Blackfriars Monastery just off the High Street, the university gradually grew to overcome many difficult times. It was helped along the way by a gift of money and land from Mary Queen of Scots, and continued to expand and improve on a well-established site on Glasgow's High Street. The site was sold to the railway in 1863, and the university moved lock, stock and barrel to a new site on Gilmorehill. Today, the University of Glasgow continues to build, grow and thrive, and has maintained its position as a world leader in the education and enlightenment of young men and woman in Scotland and all over the world.

Hope you've spotted my deliberate (ahem!) error: the old college site on the High Street was sold to the City of Glasgow Union Railway Company in 1863, not 1663.

What a great watch, fascinating history and beautiful buildings. Have you ever come across pictures of Gilmorehill/Kelvin Grove park prior to construction/creation. I walk the area most days and would love to see what it once looked like. It is hard to imagine the University not ever being there.

Thanks Eddie I always look forwards to you videos they are entertaining and very informative, I was walking down the high street the other week and noticed a "New "plaque on a old section of wall further down the road opposite The Black Bull Pub that said that the archway was an entrance to the University this puzzled me as I always assumed that the University would have been further up the high street opposite the Old Collage Bar sadly burned down recently it was opposite the Collage goods yard there is as you will no doubt know , remains a section of its wall on Duke Street. It is very important that we remember and record the changes in our City . A wee PS further on up the road Where the High Street and Castle Street merge is another of these "New" plaques explaining that this was one of the walls from Duke Street prison a short walk down from the plaque you can still see the bullet holes from a infamous incident where there was an attempt to spring a IRA member from custody he was being transported from the court in the Saltmarket, during the attempt a police officer was fatally wounded. PPS I work in the School of Engineering in the University and enjoy learning about its and Glasgow's history keep up the good work! Best regards John

Many thanks John. I always thought, or guessed, that the old college or university entrance was where the High Street railway station entrance is now or, as you say, opposite where the Old College Bar was. This isn't far off, but as you can see in one of the old photographs, the entrance to the university was exactly in line with College Street.

Thank you. Yes, I am indeed a graduate from that fine establishment. At the degree ceremony I was a tad perplexed to find my rolled-up degree in its red tube looked not unlike a large stock of rock.

What an inspiring short film. I LOVE the music. Which I realise at the credits is your own. Somehow, the flow of images, transitioning from drawings to photographs, make me feel almost as though I have a wee 'peep' at a Glasgow long ago.

Excellent stuff, Ed. I studied at the University from 1980 to 1987, and was subsequently employed as a post-doc until 1990. I loved the place 👍🏻 I'm intrigued by, and love, the music - by yourself, it says...... Is it available?

Thanks. I have made some music available on most digital music platforms; it won't be every bit of music that goes with the videos. If you search for Eddy Burns in Apple, Amazon, etc, you'll soon find it. It's mixed and produced at home, so the quality's not what you might term professional. Hey Ed, do you think you could do a wee video about Strathclyde, the less glamorous sister? All KZfaq seems to have is stuff from Strathclyde itself or nonsense from current students.

That's certainly a thought. Glasgow's clearly the older university, but we perhaps forget that Strathclyde University isn't just as modern as it initially seems and has a past going back to the late 18th century.

@@EdExploresScotland yes, Anderson's Institute, the "place of useful learning and no place for drunkards and layabouts"...not that it always hit the spot there. Then stuff about the Royal college, about the plan for the library in the old maternity hospital they didn't happen, Jordanhill... All kinds of stuff.
