An orbit is not some intrinsic force, you don't just suddenly start orbiting around the Earth when you reach orbital altitudes. An orbit occurs when the velocity of an object is balanced with the gravitational pull of the object it is orbiting. That's why the ISS is moving faster than a bullet, it has to or it will fall to Earth (and it actually still falls to Earth and has to boosted back into a higher orbit). The ISS or any orbiting body is actually travelling in a straight line but the gravity of the body it orbits is causing a relative curvature of it's path. This is why you can't jump off the ISS, but you could potentially jump off the parabolic peak of a Virgin Galactic flight because the peak has no or little velocity relative to Earth. As an orbiting object begins to fall, it's still moving straight, but now it encounters the atmosphere and not only is it going down through it, it's going 'sideways' through it at high velocity. This 'sideways' relative motion is what causes the intense drag, the drag from going straight down will not incinerate you.

The giant stick from the equator would be considered a Space Elevator. It would have to be locked in just the right place to maintain an insane tension requirement that...literally can't be done. Not yet anyway. It'd be theoretically possible with nanotube mesh or something, I dunno, Space Elevators have to be built with the anchor points already in place.
