It’s not said in the Lord of the Rings, but Frodo and Bilbo share the same birthday. When Bilbo turned 111, Frodo turned 33, which to hobbits was essentially the beginning of adulthood. When Gandalf left to search for answers about the ring, he was actually gone for 17 years! So Frodo was 50 when he began the journey to Mordor. Obviously the movie sped the timeline up a bit 😄

@@wndbrn Do you have the old translation by Åke Ohlmarks or the more recent one by Erik Andersson and Lotta Olsson? Because the old one is notorious for changing names and even reinterpreting a lot of story elements and was subsequently criticised by Tolkien for that. That said, Bri is roughly pronounced like the English Bree, right? So not really much of a diversion there. Funnily enough, I'm German and the German translation does also change a lot of names although in consultation with Tolkien. "Bree" for example is still written the same but pronounced "Breh". Interesting that it's basically the other way round in Swedish.
@wndbrn

@@Poggle_der_Geringere Yes, I have understood that Ohlmarks changed and added a lot, for example adjectives and descriptions that are not in the original. But the writing "Bri" is actually still with Erik Andersson as well. Yes, it is pronounced roughly the same, but the Swedish Bri is pronounced with a slightly higher pitch or how you say. Having said that, much else has changed in the Swedish translation. Also proper name, which I think is a shame. For example, Bilbo and Frodo's name is not Baggins but Secker, i.e. Frodo Secker. Is it the same with the german?

The Tooks are a family of Hobbits. Bilbo's mother was a Took. Pippin from LoTR was also a Took. The Tooks are an adventurous line of Hobbits and Gandalf has had a relationship with the family going back generations. That was why Gandalf got Bilbo involved in this adventure. Also, while Gandalf can't see the future he has strong intuition. He just had a feeling Bilbo should be part of this. He doesn't know why its just a feeling he has. Of course it leads to Bilbo finding the ring and it finally passing to Frodo.

Tolkien wasnt /just/ an author. He was literally an expert in the art of writing. He was a linguist, etymologist, philologist, etc. He knew language, and in particular he knew all about ancient stories, mythologies, and what made them appealing to the human imagination. He was a literary historian; he understood precisely what made a story stand the test of time. He spend a LIFETIME perfecting his work. And he lived life, a veteran of the war; he had his own experiences and pains that he was able to impart in his work. All the greatest artists suffered in life, and the greatest suffering creates the best work. I sincerely believe there is no greater author in the entire English language. Probably even in all languages.

what you were thinking of is the fact that orcs and goblins are synonymous terms, which is true there's no actual difference, however, modern audiences have chosen to distinguish between the two for the sake of clarity, nowadays when people say goblins it usually refers to the variant of orcs who have lived and adapted to the misty mountains, so while you can use orc and goblin interchangeably, an easy way to separate the two is that goblins are feral, mountain dwelling creatures and orcs are usually more organised non mountain dwelling baddies

Hey Stef, looking forward to you venturing into this trilogy so quickly! I want to answer all your questions, but since you’re all about the emotions I’ll share a bittersweet fact that inspires fellowship. Sir Ian Holm developed Parkinson’s disease and it got quite nasty. He stopped acting altogether, but Peter Jackson and crew were hoping to have him reprise the role of Bilbo, and he agreed as a favor to Peter, and I like to think he did it for the fans too. He couldn’t fly to New Zealand, so they set up a private studio in London with a small crew and all the time in the world. There, he gave this final performance as Bilbo (I believe this was his actual last acting job, though I can stand corrected), and one that can, and I think should, be appreciated by all. I think he was flawless. RIP Sir Ian Holm.

Remember in Fellowship of the Ring the trolls that were stone, they are the same 3 trolls Gandalf turned to stone in this part of the hobbit. Also when Legolas first met Gimli there was a rift between them because the dwarves felt abandoned by the elves. You see the dislike between elves and dwarves in the hobbit and is continued into Fellowship of the Ring. It took awhile but Gimli and Legolas became great friends by the end of Return of the King!

First off - Took is a genealogy, it's like Johnson or Smith, so is Baggins. Bilbo is descendant from both (as of course is Frodo). The Tooks tended to be more adventurous or inquisitive - Pippen's full name was Peregrin Took, hence there reason he was always touching what he shouldn't. And Orcs and Goblins were essentially the same thing, Goblins tended to dwell in caves and were smaller. The Orcs in LOTR from Saruman were Uruk Hai, they're technically orcs and goblins blended together to make them stronger and less susceptible to sunlight. But they're all mostly the same thing and they're all descendants from elves that darkness had twisted.

Frodo was 33 when Bilbo left the Shire, and 50 when he went on the main quest in Lord of the Rings (the movies don't really show the 17-year gap between the two events). The Ring kept Frodo at the physical age of 33, though, much as it kept Bilbo young while he had it.

So here's a basic outline. Thorin Oakenshield (the "prince") wants to reclaim Erebor and kill the dragon. However he can't do it alone and while he has access to larger dwarven armies, they won't risk it right now. But all the dwarven armies will fight if Thorin can get the Arkenstone and prove its possible to enter the mountain. Bilbo has been hired to sneak into the mountain to find the Arkenstone so that the armies of dwarves will come to the mountain and with their combined strength kill the dragon. That's the plan but we'll see how this crazy adventure goes.

This is gonna be fun! The Hobbit is a great trilogy - I really hope you won't get too many negative comments about it and let it color your opinion. Bear in mind that the book The Hobbit was written several years before before LotR, and was written as a children's story - something the movies does reflect with a lot more humour and childishness than LotR. With that said, it would probably be beneficial to not compare it too much to the LotR films' quality.

Another red flag is that they filmed and started cashing ticket sales from the first movie before they ever sat down and wrote the script for the third movie, which is the same error the Star Wars sequels made. If you're going to make a trilogy you *must* have the entire story completed already.

in the movies it's implied he's only 33, which is the coming of age for hobbits, making him essentially 21, but in the books he actually waits for Gandalf to come back for like 20 years and ends up setting out on he quest in his 50's (which is probably like late 30's or early 40's in hobbit years) The symbol Gandalf puts on Bilbo's door is an f rune: ᚠ from the very real runic alphabets used by ancient germanic peoples from about the first century ad to the eighteen hundreds in some parts of rural Sweden. Trolls and Orcs aren't the same, but Goblins and Orcs are, I know it's a little confusing, but Goblin and Orc you can remember is both meaning the smaller ones, and Trolls being the big ones. The only elven swords that turn blue are the ancient ones made in the now destroyed city of Nargothrond in the first age, thousands of years before the Hobbit. Gandalf's sword and Sting should both technically glow blue, as well as Thorin's blade Orcrist, but not any others because it's unlikely they come from Nargothrond. One thing about these movies, it that they add a lot that wasn't in the book. Ironically enough Radagast only ever appeared for a brief moment in the Lord of the Rings books and not at all in the Hobbit, Azog really was dead, and they didn't have a specific troop of orcs searching for them, and all the references or set ups of what will happen in lord of the rings wasn't there because Tolkien didn't even know he was going to write Lord of Rings when he wrote the Hobbit.

If you remember in "The Fellowship of the Ring", when they all came together at the council Legolas and Gimli disliked and did not trust the other. Because elves and dwarves had such a sorted past. When the quest started they basically just put up with each other. It wasn't till Galadriel gave Gimli three of her hairs as a gift in the forest that Legolas knew Gimli was trustworthy and of pure heart. In the book Frodo is 33 at the start of the LotR’s. He and Bilbo actually share the same birthday so the party at the start of Fellowship is actually both Bilbo’s 111th and Frodo’s 33rd combined birthday party in the book. They cut out the Frodo birthday part in the movie. Also the time between the birthday/s party and when Frodo leaves on his quest is 17 years in the book, so Frodo is 50 when he leaves, which is the age Bilbo was when he began his adventure. Elijah Woods who played Frodo in the movie was only 18 when filming began though, so he likely is not 33 in the movies.

"Fool of a Took! Next time throw yourself in and rid us if your stupidity!" Bilbo's mom was a Took before marrying his dad then her name changed to Baggins. Pippin is Frodo's cousin and is also a Took, once removed on his mother's side. And the mountain trolls were different than a cave troll that were in LOTR. In the scene after Frodo is stabbed by the black riders, the group carries Frodo away and where they stop you can see the trolls made of stone in the background.

Bull Roarer Took was an extra large Hobbit who was very wealthy with a large Family home and lived to be 130 or so. Bilbos Mother was Belladonna Took.

You get to see two of the dwarves from the group in the first "Lord of the Rings" movie. Gloin, Gimli's father, is briefly shown as an old, white-bearded dwarf arriving with Gimli for the Council of Elrond. Ori, the young, rather shy dwarf with the slingshot is the dead dwarf in Moria who is leaning against Balin's tomb and holding the book Gandalf takes and reads from. If the camera had shown a different angle during or after the fight with the cave troll, we might have seen Balin as well, as the troll smashed his tomb open, but they decided not to show him on-screen.

This happened around the day the Lord of the Rings and the Fellowship of the Ring started. The whole movie is just Bilbo's iteration of past events written in his book. So some things are embellished, like the big noses on the dwarves. These talking Trolls were mountain trolls from the Ettenmoors, some of them are smart enough to learn speech, others were animalistic. The Ologs are the war trolls of Mordor, they were smarter than the regular troll and generally spoke Black Speech.

Her reactions are fun to watch-I just have to remind myself from time to time that she is just getting introduced to it-I'm in my 70's and have read the 4 central books I don't know many times, along with a pile of others about them, I was about her age when my younger brother introduced them to me(at first I thought he was regressing into childhood with the Dwarves, eleves, Trolls and all of that, but soon became a liofelong addict) Wathing Stef getting her introduction is a joy with her intelligent , and endearing way, sometimes makes me feel like a youngster discovering it all again. for any interested another 4 book series that I (at least)_ greatly enjoy is Mary Stuarts series on the Arthurian ledgend as seen through the eyes of Merlin in the first 3 books, and through Mordred's in the last . look for the title "The hollow hills" and you will find them-may your shadows grow ever wider !

The three trolls that turned to stone made a brief appearance in the Fellowship of the Rings movie where they stopped to attend Frodo's wounds when Arwen had shown up. Sam even mentioned them to Frodo.

Bilbo Baggins and Frodo Took had an adventuring ancestor "Belladonna Took" and she might be part Pixie. Tooks have a bad reputation of inheriting an adventuring nature, this is the reason Gandalf sought out Bilbo for an adventure before he met him. Hobbits are almost magically stealthy, his job was to "burgle" gold, not kill the dragon.

Frodo was 33 when Bilbo turned 111, they share the same birthday. Frodo was about 50 when he embarked on the quest to destroy the ring of power. Gandalf was gone 17 years before he returned to the Shire to see if Frodo’s ring was indeed the one ring to rule them all. Frodo was 53 when he left with Gandalf and Galadriel to sail to the undying lands.

Frodo turned 33 on the same day as Bilbo's 111th birthday, at the beginning of Fellowship of the Ring. After that, it was actually 17 years before Gandalf came back to test the ring to see if it was The One Ring. Then it was another year before Frodo left, just as he turned 51 (though the movie modified that aa bit). So yeah...frodo would not have been born for many years after the events of The Hobbit. And...yeah, every weapon from from the Teleri, Noldor, or Beleriand elves should glimmer blue when orcs are about, but in practice generally only Bilbo's is mentioned in The Hobbit and LotR as doing so. It also should be less of a glow, and more of like a blue glittering edge.

13:20 Goblins :) Orc and Goblin is used fairly interchangeable, though one could more easily consider the smaller and more thin to be more 'goblin' and the bigger ones to be orcs.

The Hobbit was written first, and was a children’s book. This the lighter feel, such as the trolls. One of the challenges of the movie was to retain that feel, but also the feel of the LotR movies. Tolkien later regretted giving the trolls modern names. The movies make the mistake of only Sting glowing in the presence of orcs. All elvish blades glow in the presence of orcs (and goblins, Tolkien primarily used the term goblins in The Hobbit and orca in LotR, but occasionally used the term goblin to refer to orcs).

In Tolkien's lore goblins are basically orcs that live in mountains/caves, the standard "orc" are like Azog the defilers group, and the Uruk Hai are a special breed of super orcs engineered by Saruman during the time of "The Lord of the rings" films. Outside of Tolkiens lore however it should be noted that orcs and goblins usually do not share ancestry and tend to be very different from each other in capacity/function, specifically in whether they act straight forward or in a more stealthy manner.

I think of Hobbits as being Fey, or which is to say fairie-like beings akin to the Elves and not say, just small versions of men. This explains why Bilbo and other Hobbits are in tune with their surroundings, can pass quietly and mostly unseen if they desire. Elves are much more adept at those things but Hobbits certainly have similar skills.

There were three hobbit ethnicities before they mostly merged. Stoors, harfoots and fallowhides. Stoors were more physically robust and adventurous. Smeagol was a Stoor. The Tooks, a family name are largely Stoors. And while a rich and important family, they are known as mischievous troublemakers. Like Pippin.

The Tooks are a lineage of "weird hobbits", legend has it their forefather married a fairy, they are curious adventurous and brave (by hobbit standard). Frodo,Pippin and Bilbo are from this family and that why they are way more adventurous than any other hobbits who are content mainly living in the shire for their whole life.

'Goblin' was a Norman word while 'Orc' was a Saxon word; both meaning much the same thing. As his writing progressed Tolkien favoured the term 'Orc' more and more as it was closer to the English language.

Orc and Uruk are essentially synonyms of each other. Uruk is derived from the Black Speech "Uruk-hai" translating to orc-folk. The word Orc is derived from the Valinórean Elvish "Urko", which in Noldorin Elvish was "Orko".

Hi Stef, I just began watching your reactions recently, and I have to say I am having a blast! Just a quick note: A "Took" in the world of the Hobbits is a last name. There are others: Bracegirdles, Proudfeet, Glubbs, Jubbs, Baggins, etc. The Took's are a well known bunch, of whom some of their people were known to have adventures, which is quite unlike the average Hobbit who prefers to stay close to home, tilling the fields, smoking tobacco (weed) and drinking ale. Hope this cleared it up for you. ( :E

Hey Stef! I recommend google: lotro middle earth map to study before next movie. It will help a lot. All I know Bilbo was 111, Frodo was 33 which is like 18 on hobbit age. But at Rivendell Frodo was 50, Sam 38, Merry 36, Pippin 28 which means Pip was still teenager on hobbit age. 13:13 you mean orcs, goblins, uruk hai, trolls, wargs, spiders, giants, wraiths, balrogs, dragons and evil men are creeps. 17:32 not all weapons glow. Only made by elves in first age ones glow blue when orcs and goblins nearby. Tooks, Brandybucks, Proudfoots, Bolgers, Boffins, Baggins are famous families of hobbits. Check google lotro shire map. You can see some of their locations.
