CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Bard (Luke Evans) pierces Smaug's (Benedict Cumberbatch) heart and defeats him once and for all.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Peter Jackson takes cues from the appendices of The Lord of the Rings to expand New Line Cinema's Hobbit adaptation with this third film completing the epic tale of Bilbo Baggins, as played by Martin Freeman. The story opens to find the vengeful dragon Smaug (voice of Benedict Cumberbatch) decimating the peaceful hamlet of Laketown as Bilbo, Thorin (Richard Armitage) and the rest of the dwarves lay claim to the Lonely Mountain. But their celebration is short-lived as Thorin grows obsessed with finding the Arkenstone. Meanwhile, Galadriel (Cate Blanchett) Elrond (Hugo Weaving) and Saruman (Christopher Lee) battle the Nazgul in an attempt to free Gandalf (Ian McKellen), and get some unexpected help from eccentric wizard Radagast (Sylvester McCoy). Unfortunately for all involved the struggle has only just begun, because as armies of dwarves, elves, orcs, humans and goblins converge at the base of the Lonely Mountain, the fight for the future of Middle Earth begins.

Fun fact: Smaug is one of, if not the most wealthiest characters in all of fiction. He had all the Wealth in Erebor including the Arkenstone (which could buy you a kingdom and then some on it's own) plus he brought massive amounts of wealth to Erebor from many other places. he isn't just a dragon sleeping on a pile of treasure, he is _THE_ dragon sleeping on a pile of treasure.

Theres something so epic about the image of Bard shooting the black arrow, literally FROM his sons shoulders. The kid is obviously terrified as he hears Smaug taunting behind him, made even more terrifying that he cannot see whats happening. Then when he tries to look Bard stops him, both because it would ruin the shot and because he knows it will calm him. Even in his potential last moments he is there for his son first. I always come back to this scene its so freaking good

@@gangstagamegangstagame4467 I suggest you speak to Tolkien (assuming you can go back in time) and condemn him for not dedicating enough time to him in the books. The title "the five armies" strongly points to the fact the movie was going to involve competing interests fighting over the treasure, which means Smaug either died or flew away. So we have to assume Smaug won't get much screen time in the 3rd movie.

Dragons in Middle Earth had a lot of power with their words like Saruman, and could cast spells with their gaze. Glaurung, the original dragon, was very snake-like, and his words were literally poison and filled people with despair and doubt. Smaug probably inherited this power in some way. Whenever he speaks, it's full of arrogant taunting which makes his foes doubt themselves.

@markcobuzzi826 6 жыл бұрын
+Peli Sotilas Not all fantasy/mythological reptiles necessarily need to have four distinct legs, one head, purely reptilian features, bat wings, and fire breath to be called a Dragon. Fafnir from the Norse Tales does not usually have wings and breaths poisonous fumes instead of fire. Chinese dragons were large serpent-like creatures with mammalian traits, that had god-like powers and flew by controlling the wind around them and using it to carry themselves aloft. Ladon of Greek Mythology has over 100 heads and sometimes no legs at all. And then there's all the ancient sea dragons that came before the popular image of a Western Medieval dragon. Even then, I heard some of Middle Ages men made no distinction between Wyverns and Dragons, so depending on the mythos, a Wyvern can be an actual type of dragon (like drakes and wyrms) or merely an unrelated dragon-like creature.

Will forever love the moment Bard calms his son who is obviously terrified. Such a tender moment that really shows their father/son relationship. Like even in the heat of battle and all that chaos he is still a parent. Say what you will with regards to the movies but the changes they did with Bards character were brilliant. He went from a gruff, kind of moody side character who just kills Smaug to an actual character with motivation. He's a family man, and the imagery of him killing the Dragon with an arrow shot from his son's shoulders shows this off so well. It's such a short scene but one of my favorites.

In the book he went off to lake town, the dwarves bummed around in Erebor for a chapter, then we get a two page flashback of him dying

Bard used the last of the black arrow to avenge his father, Lord Girion's failure. It was his destiny to kill Smaug, everyone thought Girion failed when he managed to only pierce the dragon's scale, but Smaug wasn't supposed to die then, the mountain had to fall. Thorin's grandfather Thrór, had to reap the result of his limitless pride and boundless greed for gold- fate had to run its course. Thorin thought his destiny was to reclaim the mountain and its riches, but it was really to save middle earth. Like every one of us, he didn't believe in himself, his destiny, he couldn't see why they kept going through everything, at every turn, another door opened when all seemed closed. He didn't see the grand design, even Gandalf didn't know why he wanted to help Thorin. In the end, Thorin realizes that Bilbo was the most important of them all, despite his little stature. This Tolkien was a genius storyteller, there's a message he wanted to deliver.

Just realized this revisiting this scene. It seems that because Bard believed the account of his ancestors that there was a scale loosened under Smaug’s left wing, he knew exactly where to look and was confident that his strategy would work.

Well it was actually becuase when Smaug was showing bilbo his "impenetrable belly" he unintentionally revealed that weak spot, which a thrush (small bird) saw and relayed the information to Bard as Smaug was attacking Laketown. That's how he knew where to look to find the weakspot. Its in the books too. And older movies.

GreyD.99x Some I think it’s better that it was in the battle of the five armies because the desolation of Smaug was already long enough and it was cool that Smaug was in all three of the hobbit movies.

@@thecianinator I mean if people knew even a bit about the book Smaug died within 5 pages of the chapters, so they should've prepare for that atleast, besides Jackson wanted to finish the movie in 2 parts but fox forced him into extending into 3 so this was the result but the movie was enjoyable enough as it was I didn't found it to be that big of a deal tbh, the journey was fun watching the struggles of thorin and Bilbo and the people, to find the meanings out of their journey
