Regarding your question about Dwarves having a bad reputation: Elves and Dwarves have a long, complicated history. Much of that history is acrimonious, but some of it was cooperative and productive. So, many Elves don't trust Dwarves, and vice versa. The bromance between Legolas and Gimli in The Lord of the Rings is a rare moment between these two races where they both overcame their distrust of one another.

The elves and dwarves were friendlier at one point but then -if I remember correctly - the dwarves let their greed get the better of them and killed a beloved elf king, who had once been their friend, the elves retaliated and they've hated each other since. As for everyone else hating the dwarves, they are seen as being greedy, selfish, and isolationist ... true to some extent but it ignores their better qualities.

J. R. R. Tolkien was an absolutely amazing creative writer, the thought and research he put into the lore of the world and remolded it is mindboggling. Note that the Elves in Mirkwood (the creepy forest) aren’t exactly evil, just very territorial. Elves generally don’t like Dwarves anyways and the elves of Mirkwood are used to living alone in their area without any trespassers. So when for the first time in ages someone sneaks into their land without them knowing and it’s also dwarves, they get pretty annoyed.

the reason the ring had less of an effect on bilbo then frodo is because. bilbo did not know the ring was the one ring of power and the ring grew in power as sauron grew in in power the ring was part of the dark lord as the dark lord was part of the ring and as the ring came closer to mount doom it grew more powerful as well.

I think it has also to do with the fact that Frodo had constant skin contact with it, whereas Bilbo kept it in his pocket. And it had more effect after being stabbed with the blade of Mordor.

Fun fact: as far as Lord of the Rings lore goes, Smaug was on the less impressive side of the dragon scale. By this time in Middle Earth's history there were practically no dragon's left and those that were left, like Smaug, paled in comparison to the power of the dragon's that existed in the early days.

I always loved "The Hobbit" BECAUSE it's not the same epic story as LOTR (which, of course, I also love). It's more of a personal journey where Bilbo goes from a bumptious, portly, gentleman, fond of his comforts, to one who discovers his own strengths and surprises everyone, even himself. And learns what he's fighting for. Though Tolkien denied any influence, "The Hobbit" was written before WW2 and LOTR after, and its impossible not to draw parallels with that conflict, and others to this day. Hobbits, imo, represent ordinary people drawn into global affairs despite themselves, while the other groups are uneasy allies warring with a common foe.

So the Dwarves and Elves have a long and dark and complicated history. The friendship between Gimli and Legolas is exceptionally rare and unique in 3rd Era Middle-Earth. They kind of explain the history between the Dwarves of Erebor and The Wood Elves led by Thuranduin and Legolas, but the wider conflict is really only explained in the other books Tolkien wrote like The Silmarillion. I can't wait to watch you finish the series.

The king of the wood elves, Thranduil, pretty much has every reason to hate dwarves. There's a huge backstory in one of the books but long story short: the dwarves were supposed to make a necklace that contained a powerful gem for the daughter of the King at the time. They decided they should keep the necklace. The King insulted them for this so they killed the king, splintering the elven kingdom. I believe Thranduil was just a boy when all of this happened. And this began dwarves being known for their greed.

@@LauPulstar That's BS. Faramir in the movies is just more human, but he comes off as brave, loyal and with greater will than most men. In the books he is just quite the Gary Stu, and that's boring. He compeltely ignores the ring as if it was nothing, in the movies we see some actual character growth, even considering how little time he has compared to the books. I love Tolkien, but not everything he did is prefect. And Thranduil lacks backstory in the Hobbit movies, yea, but so did he in the books unless you read other stories. Even when the Hobbit movies are just...decent for fantasy movies, but nothing special, Thranduil was one of the most Tolkien elvish characters we got in cinema; thinking him above other races, wise, haughty, graceful...for me one of the best things in the Hobbit movies.

Scenes without Bilbo are almost entirely Peter Jackson filler (though the wider lore may have revealed somewhere that something like that happened). He gave a open mic interview and shared some great stories from different acting experiences he had. One of the best ones was from this movie. The extended version of Hobbit 2/Smaug was just about to be released for purchase and he was describing the barrel escape/ride. Apparently, Peter Jackson had guys in wetsuits run the course as a test, then basically said " so your going to get in the barrels and we'll see you at the other end." Not quite a quote but the way Graham told it just do this and this and it will be good. And the water was so rough and cold, they of course had their costumes on. "The Hobbit" is only a prequel in terms of the movies. J.R.R. Tolkien wrote "The Hobbit" for his own children in the 1930s. It caught the eye of a publisher and became a best seller. Twenty years later he surrendered to public demand for a sequel and wrote "The Lord of the Rings" in the mid 50s. Bilbo is the main character because the book was the story of his adventure.

Hey Fam I knew you wouldn't disappoint. Good choice of Movie. The Hobbit The desolation of smaug is one of my fav movies of all time! I hope Luca is better now btw, I have been keeping you guys & Luca in my thoughts & prayers this past weekend! From my understanding in the Tolkien lore, The Dwarves are known to be self centered and only out for themselves and their own according to the Elves. It's really hard to believe from just hearsay. Notice how only Gimli was the only dwarf in the Fellowship as well as Dane Thorin's Cousin told Throin in Unexpected Journey that the quest to reclaim the Kingdom of Erobore was Thorin's and Thorin's quest alone. He wouldn't risk his army of Dwarves from the Iron Hills to help dispatch Smaug. So prime example I suppose why The Dwarves are supposedly looked down at by the others in Middle Earth.

One thing about making a prequel with some of the same cast members is that the actors have aged, but they're supposed to be playing their younger selves. The first LOTR trilogy started filming in 1999; made over several years. The Hobbit trilogy came out in 2012; made over several years. For most of the returning cast- McKellan, Lee, Blanchett, Weaving- they were mature adults in the 2000s, and are still mature adults in the 2010s. But Orlando Bloom was, like, 19 when he started filming LOTR. He was playing an Elf who was older than any of their rest of the Fellowship in years (except for Gandalf), but by Elf standards was still relatively young, basically 19 in elf years. The casting was perfect. By this series, Orlando was in his early 30s, and looked it. His jawline was more mature, his face more set, and even his acting and demeanor seemed more jaded and cynical- not the jovial, enthusiastic character we would meet "later." Of all of this trilogy's shortcomings, that one sticks out to me. If they insisted on making Legolas a major character in The Hobbit (he wasn't in the book at all), I wish they had done some makeup and/or CG magic to make him more youthful, and especially, had directed his acting to be more like the Legolas we know. It's pretty rare for a person to get jaded and cynical, then later to become light-hearted and innocent; life just doesn't usually work that way. I'm relatively forgiving when adapting books to films; I know that a lot of changes are made. I don't mind Legolas being in these films. But the retroactive casting of prequels makes some things tricky. And though people cannot help how they age, they can help how they act. I feel that Legolas was poorly written, and Bloom was poorly directed. They could have done better. -My 2¢ [The Tauriel character I don't have a strong opinion on, one way or the other. I felt she was fine in the films; that she was a creation of the screenwriters, not present in the source material: whatever. Was it really necessary? Maybe not. Did it hurt? I don't think it did. -My 2¢]

Tolkien, but I think they would have done better with two fairly lengthy films if it took that and following the book a bit more closely. I love how they expanded the characters of Bard and his children.

Explaining Galadriel’s exact age through other stories - her gift to Gimli has deeper meaning behind it, like most things in this movie & reflects the expanded lore of the middle earth universe. Galadriel is one of the 2-3 most powerful & wise elves remaining in Middle Earth since the time the land was young. She was born in a place called Valinor, or the Undying land... which is basically the place of residence of the Valar, the local pantheon, the local "gods" as you may call them. Back then, the world was not illuminated by the sun, the moon. (Only the stars existed), but rather by 2 trees of gold and silver, Telperion and Laurëlin that lit the world before the sun & moon were born from their last flower and fruit as they were basically killed by Melkor. It is said that Galadriel's hair had somehow captured some of the shine of those two trees. Her uncle Fëanor, who was a great king of the Elven people & also arguably their greatest craftsman to ever live, asked/demanded that she give him a lock of hair, so that he could use it to fashion 3 gems that would shine of the same light as the trees. Sensing his pride & a shadow that wasn’t exactly belonging to him brewing from within, she refused his request 3 times. He stopped asking and made the gems anyway, managing to complete the task he had set for himself even without her hair. Around these 3 gems, the possession of which became the driving force for many of the great events in the world, entire wars that lasted for centuries exploded, & other events. The gems actively shaped the fate of the races of middle earth to the point that the aforementioned Valar got involved directly. During these times, events surrounding the gems brought about the traditional enmity between Dwarves and Elves... the same enmity that Gimli still feels towards them. That enmity however does not survive his encounter with the wise Galadriel, whom Gimli basically falls platonically in love with. By giving him 3 of her hair, Galadriel is opening a door, offering an olive branch that might one day close the gap that divides these two races. Legolas, himself being an Elven prince and centuries old, knows of the story through his father Thranduil & grandfather Oropher, as it shaped the lives of all Elves, and his subtle smile is possibly the first act of acknowledgment and reconciliation. it is also a way for Peter Jackson, the director of the film, to give a nod to all of the fans who know these facts and backstories... a way to make us feel seen, and to make us appreciate just how deeply the makers of the film respect the books and larger universe created by Tolkien. The thing with the hair may seem weird, but there is a significance to it in real life as well as in the lore of the story. In real life, it was not uncommon for wives, fiancés, or even girlfriends to give their men (who were going off to war), a lock of their hair as a keepsake, particularly in WWI, which Tolkien fought in. The lore part of it comes into play in The Silmarillion, Tolkien's tales of the creation of Arda, the Undying Lands of Valinor, and Middle Earth. Galadriel is many, many thousands of years old, & was born in Valinor before the sun & moon were even created. At the time, the world was lit by two trees, one gold and one silver which would shine at different times from each other, but would shine together once a day when one would fade and the other brighten. Galadriel's hair was said to look like the light of the mingled light from the two trees, which may have inspired Feanor, a master craftsman and heir to the high king of the Ñoldor, to craft the Silmaril's which were three jewels that captured the light of the two trees, one golden light, one silver light, & one co-mingled light. Fëanor had a bit of a thing for Galadriel and begged her for her hair three different times, which she rejected because she could perceive the inner darkness of his heart and rejected him, which made them "un-friends" after that. There is a lot more to the lore than that, so this is the super crib-notes version. But the point is, it was VERY significant that she granted Gimli three of her hairs to a dwarf, when she would not to the son of her king many 10s of thousands of years ago of which she is related to all three kings who were brothers and Elu Thingol of Doriath was one of the brothers that didn’t stay in Valinor even though he was one of the elven ambassadors along with his three brothers and that king I mentioned was VERY close friends with Thingol) ever wondered how old Galadriel is during the War of the Ring? I have looked in many different sources and depending on where you look, she’s anywhere from 17,000-20,000 years old. 6,000 seems too young as it would make her close in age to Elrond, who I know is much younger than her even though he’s 6000-6875 by the third age, which wouldn’t make sense for her at all even if she was (“690 years older” as some kept repeating on the internet making 6960!)As she was around long before Elrond was even born and time was experience differently to say the LEAST as there is a lot to go into on that subject lol.) She was born during the Years of the Trees & back then the years were something like 9X longer than a solar year so I understand the math is hard, especially since she isn’t given an exact birth year. But it is said that Finarfin, her father, was born in Y.T. 1230, so I would assume she was born sometime within 1000 years of then (being generous). Basically, I’m wondering what the most accurate range is for her age during the events of Lord of the Rings. I’ll also add that Galadriel is was around before the ents even existed (of which Treebeard is 15,000 years old so she’s OLDER than Treebeard/Fangorn) or very close to when they were “created” by Yavannah and probably had much knowledge to do with such things and or direct knowledge of what happened. Probably through an early prototype of her mirror or simply another dream that made her long for middle earth all over again ontop of the yearning she already had to go there and explore. Nothing to do with Fëanor’s oath and all that jazz. Just going from the Appendices (and maybe Silmarillion) she would have to be at least 9000+ years older than Elrond, Elrond was born near the end of the First Age, Galadriel was adult before the destruction of the Trees. Actually, more than that: I just checked, and the Second Age ended in SA 3441. So an elf born literally at the end of the First Age (FA 590) is 3441+3018 = 6459 years old when Frodo leaves for Rivendell. Elrond was born in FA 532, so adds 58 years to get 6517. Elves are mature at 100, so Galadriel adds at leas 632 to Elrond's age, to be at least 7149, and possibly quite a bit more (as attested by other comments.) One fic had Maglor(Elrond’s Adoptive Father, Maedhros was also adoptive father alongside Maglor, they were the eldest sons of Fëanor) - One fic had as much older than Galadriel; I wondered how we knew, and it was pointed out to me that Maglor was the second oldest son of the first son of Finwë, while Galadriel is the youngest child of the third son of Finwë. So, yeah. Note that the second age was the LONGEST and again time was experienced very differently back then too aside from the internal clock of elves working very differently, she’s definitely older as far as the world and the other beings that age far faster around her. I also remind you all that she’s older than the sun and the moon and witnessed and most likely even helped in the Valar’s crafting of the objects that held the last fruit and flower of the two trees of Valinor. Golden Tree Laurëlin’s Last Fruit and The Silver Tree Telperion’s Last Flower + dew She was the most involved with learning everything possible from them. She’s 25th generation from Tata, one of the elven forefathers to wake to the stars. Their birth was rather shrouded in mist. Only those of her grandfathers ilk have a chance of knowing the origins a bit better as they are closer to that culture that stemmed from the beginning. The Years of the Trees were the second of the three great time periods in Arda that followed the Years of the Lamps and preceded the Years of the Sun&Moon. They were known to be comprised of several Ages and lasted in total around 1500 Valian Years or 14,373 solar years. Time flowed differently back then and time flowed differently within them too for the elves live as long as the world does. Epic hey?❤❤ The Dúnedain said that Galadriel’s height was two rangar, or "man-high" - some 6 feet 4 inches (193 cm). However, Galadriel's most striking feature was her beautiful long silver-golden hair. The Elves of Tirion said it captured the radiance of the Two Trees Laurelin and Telperion themselves. Galadriel was said to be the tallest female in Middle Earth, at 6'4”. But then Thingol was the tallest elf ever to live, and he's estimated to be almost 9' (274 cm) Thingol was also a very very prominent figure within the Silmarillion and other books. He’s the great ancestor of Elrond+Arwen and through Aragorn being directly but distantly related to Elronds Twin Brother Elros it makes him loosely connected to Thingol as well. Let’s just say he died a tragic death long long ago. I’m a continent that doesn’t exist anymore. The events I spoke of in my earlier story of Elrond about his fathers deeds, which lead to the Valar helping with putting a Stop to Morgoth for good so to say and that War Of Wrath lasted 80 years straight and it left the landmass torn asunder from the clash of gods and the holy host of Vanyar elves that were closest to the Valar than all other elves so you can imagine what a bunch of mighty elves men and Maiar fighting a bunch of fowl creatures and beings for 80 years would do to a continent. It all fell into the sea. Galadriel barely made it over the mountain before that part of the story officially broke out.

The reason a lot of people in Middle Earth don’t like dwarves is the reason given by Bilbo, the hobbit, when he says (paraphrased), “I realize they can be greedy and stubborn….smelly/dirty, without manners, and difficult to get along with, but they are loyal and you can count on them when you need them.”

When Thorin calls Smaug names, "wyrm" is actually an Old English derivation of "dragon", appropriate for a master of languages like Tolkien. But you are correct; mainly for people who read the books, The Hobbit movies did seem rather drawn out. For The Lord of The Rings trilogy, each movie was essentially 1 of the books. The Hobbit was 1 book (smaller than any in the later trilogy), stretched out across 3 movies, so a LOT was added. This was not necessarily a BAD thing (especially if one hasn't read the books), but some of the added material did seem a bit . . . forced . . .

Peter Jackson initially planned for only two hobbit films but the studio insisted on more to hopefully rake in more cash. The development of the hobbit films was notoriously rushed and unrefined. They had production and direction issues at several points as well. I think if Peter Jackson had long preproduction time and did it without interference we’d have gotten a much better final product.

In case no one told you...this story is set in the third age of the world. In the ages before there had been Dwarves who conducted trade with Elves. They even helped Elves build mansions inside caves for safety from the first Dark Lord, the master of Sauron. One of these Elves was Thingol. He had obtained one of the Silmarils, jewels beyond price. How he got it is a long story. The dwarves had made a necklace called the Nauglamir, incredibly beautiful and crusted with jewels. Thingol owned the necklace and contracted with the Dwarves to incorporate the Silmaril into it. Once it was made the Dwarves wanted to keep it and Thingol tried to send them packing without paying for their work. It ended up in a battle in which most of the Dwarves were killed. That was the beginning of the enmity between Elf and Dwarf. It continued down the ages. That's the significance of the friendship that developed between Legolas and Gimli, and of Gimli's fear of Galadriel before he met her and then his complete 180 afterward.

At 2:50 Gandalf always played the long game. The meeting with Thorin was decades before the War of the Ring. Sauron has not yet declared himself openly. Yet, Gandalf knew that if war came to Gondor, Sauron would press the attack on all fronts. He was concerned that Smaug would side with the Dark Lord and expose the flank of Gondor. So he encourages Thorin to reclaim Erebor and kill the dragon, slaying two birds with one stone. Gandalf's foresight proved almost clairvoyant. Before the Council of Elrond (FOTR), emissaries from Sauron sought to bribe the King Under the Mountain. When the King rejected the offer, the emissary turned to threats and was escorted from Erebor and Dale. When Aragorn leads the Men of the West against the Black Gate, the dwarves of Erebor and the men of Dale repelled Sauron's army, protecting the city of Minas Tirith, which was left with only a token force.

Lord of the Rings is FAR superior to Harry Potter, in my opinion. Not even close. LOTR was the crowning achievement in the history of film and the greatest writing ever, with the greatest characters and cast ever, and the greatest musical score and special effects ever. You did get to see Sauran in physical form at the very beginning of the first LOTR movies, where the elves and humans were gathered to fight the armies of Sauron. Isildur cut Saurons finger off, with the ring on it. Then. as Isildur was travelling he was attacked by orcs and died in the river, with the ring of power sinking to the bottom. It was in this river, long after, that Smeagols' friend found the ring and Smeagol killed him for it.
