The heart of this talk is Dr. Blankinship's response to the criticisms levied against the Qur'an's authenticity as a sacred and preserved scripture from God. After discussing briefly the two periods of revelation in Makkah and Madinah as well as the revelation event at the cave of Hija, the speaker analyzes the Qur'an's quality of self-reference, the significance of knowing the chronology of revelation, and the character of the Qur'anic text (both the written and the oral aspects). In discussing the many fascinating qualities and characteristics of the Qur'an, the speaker allows for the most sacred text in Islam to speak for itself in answering the supposed question of legitimacy. One highlight of this lecture is an example that Dr. Blankinship puts forth of the unique rhyme scheme of certain verses in the Qur'an and orthographic irregularities that actually prove the authentic transmission of the text! Another wonderful lecture for Muslims and non-Muslims as well as students of history. The speaker's passionate style evokes very engaging questions from the non-Muslim audience and results in many interesting and enlightening exchanges. (Recorded at the Dar al Islam Teachers' Institute seminar).

@psalmsurfer1 But the difference is that the original text of the Qur'an has not been altered. Therefore the "misinterpretation of the holy books" by human beings cannot be done in the case of the Qur'an because of access to the original Arabic. This is what I was emphasizing in my comment, just in case he or she hadn't considered this before. But thanks!

@lambuponthethrone Read the Qur'an. I think you'll find God talking to you. And if you don't want to rely on human interpretation, learn Arabic and read it again. Arabic is the original language it was revealed in, so you have access to the authentic revelation without changes. You seem sincere. May you be guided!

It is a tradition of a muslim to memorise chapter from the quran or the whole quran during ancient time or in the early part of islam as you can see it today in the islamic country and recite chapters in the quran everytime a muslim perform prayer from the time of muhammad (PUB) and it continued until today. So oral tradition is strong let alone the written record of the quran. And its error's free is a proof of its originality ant its authenticity and still stands today as a challenge to non muslims.

I'm interested in your interpretation of Mohammed in the cave. When I have previously been learning this story I had heard it translated as "read", rather than recite. Is it appropriate to conclude that the arabic word uses can be translated into both read and recite and is ambiguous to some degree?
@vicachcoup
@vicachcoup 8 жыл бұрын
The word can mean both. Iqra is an imperative commanding the person to recite. The root QR can be use to denote the act of reading or recitation. So people who recite the quran are called Qaris and the act of reciting the quran is called sometimes called Qiraya. I have very basic knowledge in arabic so I'm not sure this is the level of answer you were looking for.

One interpretation is that Prophet Muhammad thought the Angel was commanding him to read, and since he could not read or write, he answered I am not a reader, then the Angel repeated recite. Another interpretation is that the prophet understood the word i context, but he still would not be a reciter because he was illiterate and so he was answering that he has no material to recite. Either way that was a reflection of lack of any significant knowledge or memory by the prophet at the time. This is in fact big evidence (among other huge piles of evidence) that hugely weakens the accusation that Quran was partially plagiarized.

If one asks - why did the Prophet saws not have the quran compiled into one complete volume in his lifetime. Some possible answers might be that he was anticipating the revelation of verses which would be placed between other verses up until his death, and that he was also anticipating the abrogation via forgetting and losing single pieces during his own lifetime whilst the Quran was yet being revealed despite best efforts of people to remember - and this is not the same as putting it in a single preserved book during his lifetime - which would create the issues of other peoples copies becoming obsolete daily, and any possible leader after him using him as an authority for making other companions disregard the verses they had with them. The fluidity makes sense in proper context. Volume 6, Book 61, Number 550:Narrated Abdullah:The Prophet said, "It is a bad thing that some of you say, 'I have forgotten such-and-such verse of the Qur'an,' for indeed, he has been caused (by Allah) to forget it. So you must keep on reciting the Qur'an because it escapes from the hearts of men faster than camel do."Volume 6, Book 61, Number 551:Narrated Abdullah:I heard the Prophet saying... (as above, no. 550).Volume 6, Book 61, Number 552:Narrated Abu Musa:The Prophet said, "Keep on reciting the Qur'an, for, by Him in Whose Hand my life is, Quran runs away (is forgotten) faster than camels that are released from their tying ropes."

your video is very thorough on the biography but the order of the quran is definite you have mentioned that it is "purely speculative and is not known" actually according to islamic hadith it is related that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon) was told the correct order of the quran by angel Gabriel, and the order has not changed until this day, because anyone who chooses to change it will never be accepted the quran has been memorized from cover to cover

Peace Islam22. Yes you are right the holy prophet went to great pains to make sure the Quran was written down in it's proper order. So is it coincidental then that the Ayat are arranged from big to small, from front to back ? I mean that would have to be some coincidence.

If the final message was so important, why didn't Mohammad compile the Quran before he died. He had a slow death (from being poisoned) so had time to organise it, and had time to say for definite who would be his successor to organise this. Neither happened. Yet decades later it was decided thta it WAS important to compile it because verses were being lost. There is no original Quran. Not one survived the 7th century - so much for preservation. The earliest Qurans are from the 8th century and are different in length, in words and sentences.
@abz2000123
@abz2000123 6 жыл бұрын
Austin O Keeffe Thank you for your important question, it wasn't his duty to compile it in written form since his duty was only to convey the message to the people, it was the duty of the people to organize their own affairs and future leaders, and God's to call them to account - this can be seen in many instances in his life and from the way in which he refused to fix the market food prices during downturns despite requests - his reason given being fear of being held to account for people's property and honour on the day of judgement. He did however have revelations written down as they were revealed, and he did assign various companions to the memorization of chapters.

abz2000123 It was the duty of the people to organize their own affairs?? Really? Even the 4 caliphs ar-rashideen were killed by the muslims! Nowdays, islam have many versions such as sufi, sunni, syiah, ahmadiyah, the 4 imam mazhabs like malikki, syafie, hambali, hanafi and now wahabbi. Confused? Or maybe was just too much for human nature to handle? Action of human crime changes over time. Human knowledge and morals also changes continuously over generations and that is how it goes. Nothing will stay the same. Have you not realised even the Quran and the interpretation changes over time. Why? We humans homo sapiens are getting smarter not the other way round! So be it!

‏Narrated Ibn `Abbas `Umar said, "Our best Qur'an reciter is Ubai and our best judge is `Ali; and in spite of this, we leave some of the statements of Ubai because Ubai says, 'I do not leave anything that I have heard from Allah's Messenger (pbuh) while Allah: "Whatever verse (Revelations) do We abrogate or cause to be forgotten but We bring a better one or similar to it." (2.106) USC-MSA web (English) reference : Vol. 6, Book 60, Hadith 8 Arabic reference : Book 65, Hadith 4481
@gyancurious6751
@gyancurious6751 7 жыл бұрын
Mohamed A. Hussein Together with verse 16:101 , they are called the verse of abrogation, and is applicable whenever two verses on the same subject have been revealed with different rulings , the verse revealed later prevails over the former and this is the opinion of majority of the scholars and confirmed by the hadith- ‏ ‏"Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (pbuh) as saying: He who took an oath and then found another thing better than (this) should expiate for the oath (broken) by him and do (the better thing). Reference : Sahih Muslim 1650 b In-book reference : Book 27, Hadith 19 USC-MSA web (English) reference : Book 15, Hadith 4053 (deprecated numbering scheme). The verse 9:5 and other similar verses thus abrogates some of the comprising verses revealed earlier in Mecca. After this discussion one question arises - why Allah in all his wisdom didn't revealed the better verses at the outset, why most of the verses were revealed later to give divine justification of the actions of Mohammed, why most of the verses were revealed at the convenience of Mohammed and further his agenda, fulfill his own lust and ambitions.

Very lightweight talk that sheds no light on the veracity of the revelation of the Qur'an. He simply only gave a historical rundown of the public knowledge account of how the Qur'an was supposedly put together. How can a prophet be scared when they receive a word from GOD? Muhammad convulsed and was suicidal and wanted to throw himself off a cliff out of torment from receiving the word of Allah. Only a demonic spirit (a jinn) appearing as an angel of light is capable of tormenting and forcing someone (squeezed his arm to read or recite) to want to commit suicide. Waraqah ibn Nawfal (Khadijah's cousin who was a Christian) was the one who convinced Muhammed that he was supposedly hearing from GOD. The Qur'an is a hadith and the word comes from the root word "Iqra" which means to read or recite. There are no verifiable manuscripts that support the authenticity of the Qur'an.

There is nothing that he's said in this lecture that's historically inaccurate, he's presenting it in somewhat objective academic talk, in a 20 year old video when the guy was younger, to a room of mostly non-Muslims but nothing he's said is inaccurate differs from what is known to scholars. HE spoke of the Jazm, the Qirat, the vowelying, the predominance of the oral transmission over the written (which is true and well known to any Muqri or Hafidh), the history of the writing, compares it to the Bible and Greek writings, the earliest dated Quranic inscription in the Qubat al-Sakhra in Jerusalem, and so on. All of this stuff can be found in Arabic language historical texts much less than anything else. And if you were paying attention and not getting triggered by the fact he doesn't sound like a bloody village Movli Sahib, which is pre-requisite for any 'traditional Muslims' paying attention to one, then you would notice everything he is saying is stuff well known to our Muslim Ulama and none of it is objectionable. He explicitly says "the story of the transmission of the Quran is pretty unshakable"

(Salallahu alayhi wa sallam, Not "PBUH" - because since you are so critical here is some criticism back at you, you do realize that some people would make inkar on you Mr. Talat Rahman for abbreviating the english language translation of the salawat ? )

The respect, love, and personal knowledge of the speaker attests to his belief whether he considers himself one or not. He is not antagonistic nor does he express negativity towards Quran. Why even raise the issue of whether or not he is a believer or not? Shouldn't that be left to Allah, since it is He who really knows? Whatever the case may be this was an excellent discussion of the history of the compilation of Quran.

Believe or not? Unlike the Muslim claims, Islam in fact had no original Quran version.. because Moh's word was recorded with various poor unreliable tools (leaves, skins, memorization...missing, lost, destroyed, ...). As a result, after Moh died, there were various unreliable, different Quran versions for sure, and worse when Calif Othman made one Quran as one God law system in the new Islamic empire by burning the previous Quran versions to cover up his Quran version.
