I can only imagine the feeling to be at the home of the biggest roman emperor

What a trip to see the things that Augustus saw! And check out the faux shadow for the pillar at 2:19. Dang. These artists were paying attention.

Thank you, nicely done. Great choice of music. My late husband put me to shame as an Augustophile. Im so happy we got to see this very special villa.

At 2:31 you can see that the exterior of the house has been degraded not just by the removal of plaster and marble, but also by the layer of bricks which contained the concrete inside the walls. It is this missing layer of bricks that helps make Roman ruins such an eyesore. During the fascist era between 1936 and 1945 about half the area of the walls of the Mausoleum of August were restored with reproduction Roman bricks, but today that would be impossible to do due to the modern concerns about authenticity. In this example I think that there is nothing to be gained by allowing visitors to see Roman concrete that has been heavily eroded, so if I was a dictator like Mussolini I would demand that it be covered up with new brickwork in the Roman style.

How is it known that this was in fact his house? I’m not doubting it, just curious as to how we know ?

the ONLY WAY this could ve survived so wonderfully to the present, is that it should ve been buried intentionally and early on, just like the house of Nero. Else, the whole thing would ve been long gone and replaced
