You know they don't pay people for reviews right? It's not worth it for video game publishers as only really the hardcore gaming community watch reviews, the other 90% of players aka casuals don't give 2 shits about reviews.

@@Scyon13 This is exactly why it is actually worth paying for reviews, actually. Since this channels can probably reach potentially a couple thousand actual buyers among the hardcore, it's likely cheap to pay for a good review. Imagine if you had to pay to reach 2 million buyers, now that's too much of a risk to pay. A few hundred bucks is much more reasonable.

@@Erlaxis I doubt a few hundred bucks would do it though you would have to pay the a couple grand at least and that would be for a 7 or 8, with the price rising on a yearly basis also then why wouldn't large companies pay for their bad games to get good reviews? It doesn't make financial sense as they would just be shooting themselves in the foot in the future as big name reviewers would just ask for more and more.

Considering the films were from around the 1990 (when some of these content creators were too young to soak up the era's pop culture or had even yet to be born) and international interest towards Hong Kong films is waning, I'm not surprised the themes of this game flew over their heads.

Your review style is one that should be taken notes from. Games are more than just a rating out of 10, and the way you describe them is really helpful for prospective purchasers.

Ralph - this is one of the reasons I *really* enjoy your stuff. Your whole hearted support of indie titles and smaller devs is really refreshing. I appreciate how I've never seen a review where you "beat up on" an indie dev, but when one comes along that is exceptionally good you don't hesitate to give them as much attention and accolades as you'd give a full on triple-A title. Thanks.

fun game, even if it feels like you've oversold it. Imo, these games actuality remind me of the flash games era, which often were extremely experimental. *In fact*, back in the 2005/2007 era, there was an multiplayer game of the same genre called Stickarena, it is still on and sadly abandoned.

To offset that though I think ShillUp said right at the outset that this game was built by two guys hacking away on their own. Ralph tends to give a bit of extra leeway to small and indie teams but also clearly says that. Look at his review of Tower of Time, Gris, Ashen, even WH40K martyr & Darksiders 3 ... he's always on record of being a little easier on smaller shops and reviewing them with a lens to the expected capability of indie-scene games. We're not going to get AAA out of a 2 man studio, but indie games are a different scope and expectation. (He only ever really screwed up on his No Man's Sky review). Remember - the Hong Kong massacre is less than $20 on steam right now so they're not charging a crazy amount to begin with. Anyways, all that said - there's something to be said for a flash game every once in a while. :)

another game that makes you go into a focused repetitive trance of experimentation that I wholeheartedly recommend is Deadbolt, it's has a different camera angle but it perfectly fits the same type of game

Great review. I agree with you to a tee. I am pulling my hair out with the last 'today' level. Seems like there are so many bugs, especially with getting hits to register with the 100% accuracy challenge. The first level in the police station has got to be the most broken level in the game on the PS4. Wasn't sure if I was the only one having these issues. Cheers on the review Dude

Generally when I see a video saying please don't skip this I think "Nope". But this and Laymen have earned enough brownie points to get me to take a look. Sort of like having high enough speech skill and reputation for the bouncer to let your character in the club even though you are not on the list in an RPG. Glad I did, since this looks like something Ill definitely get and hadn't heard of it till now.

man you made me feel old with that bit about the max payne series. I have been a gamer my whole life, I too, have been there when May Payne came out. I played it excessively with gun-kata mods and it was the coolest shit ever. felt even better than the matrix game because of all the sick moves you could do and how they emphasized flowing through the game. I think your comparison was really on point there, although it made me feel super old, and I haven't even reached my 30s yet ;d

1:14 I can't believe how old Max Payne is. I remember watching preview footage of it before it came out. It might have been on that show, X-Play (Extended Play). I remember being blown away by what they were showing. It was amazing. That game was just so awesome.

Also see: Mr.Shifty Similar style but instead of bullet time your skill is a nightcrawler-esque teleport mechanic. Probably one of my favorite Switch games. I am super excited to try this name now as it looks like an even more polished version of this style game.

This game is the perfect example of what fun gameplay can achieve on what is on every other basis a bland or even bad game. Gameplay and fun are the two paramount features a game must have above all others

I agree with everything you said. I had no idea this game existed until I saw the launch trailer, then I bought it no questions asked. Yes, it has problems but it is also the most satisfying shooter since Max Payne 3. BTW: wot part of 'straylia you from? I'm from melbourne

This is funny in 2023, bc Hong Kong Massacre is doing Max Payne, but people see John Wick; but Max Payne was doing the Matrix that’s, also, John Wick … sort of. And now, a John Wick did Hong Kong Massacre, so whole thing is a giant Keanu ouroboros.

Super safe might work if you just want top get through but you won't get any upgrades that way because you need to do fast, or no slo-mo, or bullets only hit the enemy perfectly runs to get enough to stars to unlock stuff.

Great review... made me buy this the ps4 pro, im really enjoying this except for the slightly off controls and maybe if we could get bullet tracers a different color and when changing angles to fire it can be pretty jarring.. well on ps4 anyway, and turn the blurring off on the final kill 😄 hope the devs add a few patches to tighten everything up

This looks perfect on KZfaq Cinema mode on a Widescreen 1080p display. There are only 3 rows of black pixels.

Maybe for the future, just...when you are reviewing games based on PC gameplay, at least I would be happy - if I know what engine the game runs on. Is it Unity or some custom made, etc. Thnks!
