Throughout the centuries, many Kings have had mistresses. Henry VIII had Anne Boleyn's sister as a mistress before he married the other Boleyn girl, but in France there was a very famous mistress who came from nothing to become incredibly wealthy. Jeanne Becu, or Madame du Barry was a poor girl, who was known for her beauty but through a number of affairs she became part of the King's royal court, and even became King Louis XV's Chief Mistress. With this she slept with the King whenever he desired, but Louis XV spent a huge amount of money on her. He even ordered her a piece of jewellery known as 'The Diamond Necklace,' which was worth millions.
However following the King's death, Madame du Barry was banned from court and she lived out her life on her own land. But the during the French Revolution, she was linked with treason and helping people to escape the Revolution. Because of this she was sentenced to death, and on the same device that executed King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, she was executed on the guillotine in front of a huge crowd.
