One of the most infamous executions of the Medieval period in England occurred when a Scottish rebel who had been a thorn in the side of King Edward I was dragged throughout the streets of London. William Wallace who has also been known as 'Braveheart' was sentenced to death for treason and he had caused chaos with the English army, leading the Scots to a number of victories against the old enemy. However Wallace was handed over to the English and he was then sentenced to death. He was to be hanged, drawn and quartered.
He was dragged behind a horse on a hurdle from the Tower of London, and was then taken to Smithfield where he met the executioner. His execution was one which was harrowing, and following this his head was then placed high above London Bridge, and his remains were sent to four places in the north to serve as a warning to the Scottish.
