The Hounskull

Here I talk about the Hounskull or pig faced helmet, it is a very common kind of helmet worn in Medieval Europe, which actually took the place (in many cases) of the great helm, which kept being used but became far more uncommon after the development of the hounskull. Its visor was the key of its success.

my favorite helmet ever, its kind of quirky and unique, while still looking quite cool to me, the sillhouette is quite interesting, removing the very human form and adding a strange beak shape. idk, just some thoughts, a unique helmet and time period to me.

I love the look of the hounskull, It's ugly in a beautiful way. And it's so different than other helms in terms of appearance.

It's a pity you don't have a liner with that, and the hinge pin to flop the visor sideways. I've often wondered how annoying that would be to have the weight pulling your head sideways from that.

I noticed that the houndskull visor is the exact same as mine but the bascinet is different and I also noticed brass fittings did you change the bascinet if so where did you get it from

John Smith nope it was all one helmet so I didnt' change it. It's a cheap one I hope to be able to get a better quality hounskull soon ^^

Just be sure not to lift your visor up and laugh at your enemy when his attacks just bounce off your armor. You'll give him an opportunity to deck you in the face. Dark Helmet from Spaceballs learned the hard way when he fought Lonestar.

So what did most men wear along with these helmets? I'd assume plate or a brigandine? Where mail shirts completely abandoned when this helmet became popular ?

Floyd Keim III Mail was still used so you could were mail with it up to a full 14th century plate harness, these were very popular

I love your videos Metatron and this is a bit old but you should know thast this is not a propper bascinet, the shape is false (have to me morge diagonal), the Eye slit Shape is false( have to be more prominentand schaped like a Pyramid, no duts for an aventail, no "mouth" to look down.

Quite frankly I dislike my houndskull bascinet helmet because you have to tilt down the helmet to see out of it and that completely exposes the neck

Your helmet may just need some adjustments. My helm's vision is quite fine.

That Bascinet is quite badly done. I doesnt shows the real look of a bascinet like the Chartres one (which i own) or others . its a cheap indish Reproduktion and you doesnt Name the other Kind of bascinets ( Grand Bascinet, Klappvisor Bascinets...)

This was before he could afford to purchase quality armor, he's said it before in his younger days. He just had that helmet to give you an idea of what it looked like, and the video is not worthy of a dislike.
