They forced in two different major plotlines (cure, phoenixsaga), they changed directors, they rushed it and it was just a cash grab. Too much focus on Wolverine. Killed off major characters. No character development. Botched the whole Phoenix mythos (She was automatically evil and it was a latent ability suppressed in her instead of an outside force that took over her body)

I think the real problem with it is was essentially trying to be two different movies at the same time. a movie about the cure, and a movie about the Phoenix. both of these are great concepts, but in trying to do them both at the same time, both of them took away from each other to the point that neither of them felt properly developed. the problem with the cure storyline was that it seemed irrelevant to most of the characters. the majority of them just immediately brush it off and deal with other things for the rest of the movie. Wolverine, Storm and Xavier are all dealing with the Phoenix, and Bobby and Kitty are dealing with their relationship. the only main characters who are dealing with the cure are Magneto and Rogue, so it just ends up feeling like an afterthought. the problem with the Phoenix storyline is that it feels extremely rushed. they don't take time to build up her transformation like in other interpretations, she just pretty much goes completely insane right off the bat. because of this and the lack of screen time, they don't really explore her internal struggle at all. they have an interesting dilemma set up in the question of weather or not Charles did the right thing with Jean, but they kill him off right after so that can't be explored. Storm becomes a leader in the end, but she never rejects the idea of it in the beginning when Xavier brings it up, so it doesn't feel like any major growth for her character. the only character arcs that I liked were those of Wolverine and Magneto.
@beksc9209

Excellent points. Everybody in this movie had nothing to do, really. Scott died immediately, which sucked. Rogue was only on-screen at the beginning and end of the film. Everyone else ran around putting out fires. Nobody grew and the story was very plot-driven. Oh, and Phoenix was basically a block of granite the entire movie. Magneto really bothered me in this movie. He was much more evil than previously. It felt way out of character and didn't make sense. We know he doesn't mind killing people, but he still generally tends to stay away from massive overkill, like the Golden Gate Bridge scene would have caused. His regaining his magnetic powers at the end is confusing, too---what about Rogue and Bobby if Rogue's power starts working again? My biggest thing, tho, is that Magneto basically became Hitler, and no one in the movie or on the internet seems to have noticed. Magneto believed in a superior race (mutants). He would totally have been happy to rule over the other mutants. He was happy to kill anybody who got in his way and shunted Mystique to the side as soon as she became useless to him. He amassed a group of radicals and needlessly got them killed. I know people sometimes become like the person they hate the most, but still, Erik Lensherr was remarkably lacking in self-awareness. I also found it odd that as soon as he became human, he saw Phoenix going nuts and questioned his wisdom in releasing her... which makes it look like his power itself blinded him, which it did not. He definitely knew what he was doing.

Nathaniel Foga one positive thing Ratner did with Storm is make her a more prominent member of the X-Men by having her be leader following Cyclops’ absence and Xavier’s death. However, Singer on the other hand seems to hate Storm. - X-Men: during the final action scene, Storm didn’t seem to have a defined role while Jean, Wolverine and Cyclops did - X-Men 2: literally only good scene is with her and Nightcrawler talking about how they handle being mutants in the presence of humans. Everywhere else she has minimal lines and not much to do. - DOFP: ONLY MEMORABLE THING IS SHE DIED - Apocalypse: she once again had about as many lines as Wonder Woman in BVS. Hell she only became a good guy for the sake of making her an X-Men instead of a bad guy.

For me, I hate this movie. It was the first film I remembered having a thought of “Wait, something is not right”, which started with Cyclops dying (that part I will never get over still because Cyclops is one of my favorite characters ever and him getting the axe unceremoniously made me upset). But I also didn’t like how most of the characters, with the exception of Beast who I thought was perfect and the best part about that movie, were shafted or ignored, as well as certain storylines were more focused on than others, which made it an uneven experience. I know there’s worse movies out there, but I remember this as the first big movie that made me feel a great sense of disappointment and frustration. But on a positive note, I loved Beast, most of the performances are solid, the action sequences were good, particularly the final battle, there are some good scenes in it, and the score composed by John Powell was fantastic. But even with the good stuff, I still feel a sense of sadness and anger that I cannot shake 😞

I was eleven and hadn't even realized that comics outside the Sunday newspaper were a thing and X3 still felt a little underwhelming and, as you said, "Not quite right". Not to mention rather jarring. Jean's suddenly evil, Magneto suddenly raids a warehouse full of Mutants that have weird powers, etc. My favorite movies have been the ones where Wolverine is the only main character and he has friends who get him, i.e. X-men Origins and the one where he goes to Japan. Maybe I have a bias against comic book movies that aren't the Dark Knight trilogy or the MCU, but I haven't watched the Spiderman or X-men movies more than once and don't even remember Spiderman 1 and 2. Compare that to fanboying over Heath Ledger's Joker and making it a point to watch every MCU movie, avoiding trailers and spoilers, and trying to memorize the plots of all of them, including the ones I'm not fond of.

And the "I'm The Juggernaut, BITCH!" scene? Hilarious. Besides, this film changed my life in that it got me interested in The X-Men which got me interested in comic in general, so I've always felt a bit of fondness for this one. I respectfully disagree. Apocalypse had a cool opening scene like X2. Magneto's story, though so redundant at this point, had actual emotional weight. Cyclops, Nightcrawler and Quicksilver actually had personalities. It had a lot of problems, too, but I actually cared about the characters. X3 had cringy dialogue (I'll never forgive that meme mentioned in this video) and made a Dark Phoenix cardboard cutout out of Jean. All that build-up in X2, wasted. If you can't remember what happened in Apocalypse...well, I wanted to forget X3 as I was watching it. X-Men Origins was the worst. I'll give you that.

A single movie on either the cure storyline or the Pheonix storyline would be amazing. One of my main issues with this movie was how the X-Men don’t really have any meaningful conversations about the cure save for that one moment between Rogue and Wolverine. Sure we know that Storm is against the cure, but she never elaborates on why. It was also disappointing how Cyclops was dead at that point as him maybe wanting to take the cure could give him some depth. Really such a huge impact on the mutant community should’ve been discussed more amongst the team.

There's a lot of problems we could all bat back and forth about the X-Men movies, starting with the lack of X-Men (they're Wolverine movies, essentially, until they become Jennifer Lawrence movies. Wolverine's far from my favorite character; I have no problem with him being a prominent character, I have no problem giving him a solo movie - he's got an interesting and rich backstory - and Hugh Jackman seems like a genuinely good dude, but there are so many other interesting and diverse characters who should also be featured, like Gambit and Cyclops and Colossus and Storm. Nightcrawler and Rogue. And of course Jean Grey would headline the Dark Phoenix saga, which should be hard to fuck up. Jennifer LawrenceM/Mystique, on the other hand... look, mileage may vary with regards to J Law, but Mystique just isn't that prominent an X-Men character. She shouldn't be part of the founding of the team, she shouldn't be a team leader. She's a secondary character. No shade if you like her, I'm not saying she's not interesting - or has the potential to be - but making her a leader is like making Deadpool a leader; it'd be fucking stupid. And it was.) BUT... my biggest gripe is how they wasted Cyclops. He's far from my favorite X-Men character, but he's in this category of boy-scout heroes that get shit on too much, because lame people think they're "boring" (Superman, Captain America, Cyclops, etc). And we all see how well a charming, earnest, genuinely good dude like Chris Evans embodied Cap in a way that made him a much more popular hero. I have no doubt that James Marsden could've done the same with Cyclops. He just wasn't given a chance, and that's a bummer. I think someone will eventually get the X-Men right, but Marsden won't ever be given an X-Men script worthy of him.

I knew in advance they weren't going to be able to do justice to the Dark Phoenix story, so I wasn't disappointed overall. But apathy turned to anger when the remaining X-Men were assembling for the final battle and it was _Wolverine_ who delivered the pep talk. Storm was the obvious choice to take over as leader; Professor X even said so at the beginning of the movie. Making her an appendage to Wolverine was criminal.

If I may add, movie culture was different back then. All you needed to satisfy the geek fanbase during X-Men 1's release was to get the actor casting right. As superhero movies were released again and again, so did the fanbase begin to expect better plot. This is one of the reasons why the MCU was a success, they made a gamble that the future of superhero movies were in well-made plots and intriguing storylines. The fanbase wanted to evolve as an audience, as well as be entertained. This is what the MCU provided.

I think one idea that could have made the cure storyline work is maybe instead of the Dark Phoenix, introduce the Sentinel storyline instead on how they ended up taking over the world. I read a guy’s post on reddit on how the cure could have been enforced by the Sentinel robots that hunt down mutants and they would have made more effective soldiers and weapons than the humans. But here is a few ideas that could have made this a true trilogy ender. Have Magneto’s mindset from X-2 of killing all humans still be here, or at least let him come to a realization that that maybe at the end of the day he is going to have to kill all of humanity in order to keep the mutants safe from them. For at least 2 movies tensions between mutants and humans were growing, but here it could have been at an all time high, or just finally exploded in terms of tension, leading to the most epic battle yet. I mean the reason I say this, is that when Magneto moved the bridge to the island, why did he spared the human family in there? Is it because its possible they are mutants? Does he still have some sympathy for humans when he is at war with them? Does he have a no kids killing rule? Whatever the fuck that is?!!!!!!!! Yes he knows lives are going to be lost, but this also goes to his attack on the island, if there were any humans still on the bridge at the time, instead of sending his forces, why not just hold the humans ransom and demand that they hand over the boy or they kill all the humans? I mean, how in the fucking hell... did he just send all of his forces, or hell just drop the bridge on the facility? Maybe its just a movie in terms of all the plot holes and everything and how we are supposed to overlook them, but there was clearly a wasted opportunity for him to show how much darker Magneto’s character has gotten over the time. Maybe his movement towards the bridge could have been more scary by having his followers kill every human on sight, or use the family as an example, just whatever the fuck they decided to send the “pawns” first, was just stupid when they clearly had other chances to do this. Hell, if he truly did abandoned Mystique and she ratted him out or what not, well then why not have her confront Magneto again before the battle, and then perhaps she says something about his army and how she and them, and even Magneto are still “human”. What I mean is in this case, that they still show kindness towards others, how she got to see life from the other side that she never got to in a very long time, and how she has finally came to realized that what she was doing with Magneto and his plans was just wrong, and that it wasn’t the way to do it, and that they ended up harming a lot more people then they helped, and that his way will only mean the end of his kind. They truly didn’t want war. Other parts can be mentioned that everyone of them is still human in one way or another, they still have moral grounds, they can still get sick, they can still die. They aren’t immortal, and they aren’t gods. They are only mutants because they have some sort of special powers that makes them just more powerful, but they aren’t unbeatable. The X-Men knows that, and they are fighting for the same cause, for all of humans and mutants to co-exist (this would all be against her character, but if she is human, this could give her more motivation for a redemption moment), and if he wants to destroy that, then Magneto needs to kill her, as she will stand in his way, no matter what happens. I mean, a moment that could have challenge Magneto and his followers as they are still human technically, but it would also lead to Magneto’s most evil moment of all. He realizes that he is still human, along with his followers, and that Mystique has called him out on his bullshit, and perhaps because of that if he really does mean his goals, then maybe he should kill her with no remorse at all, maybe becoming a pure monster (not like mutate into creature) and state that when he destroys the cure and the X-Men, they will kill every last bit of humanity on this planet and erase their world all together because as long as humanity exist, they will always be those that will attempt to stop them, and now that they learned about their weakness, they decided to just get rid of their human side and just embrace the hatred all together, and just outright kill them all. Also, if you are going to kill Charles, make it permanent. It’s that simple. Hell, it would have given Magneto the motivation he needed or what not to go through with his plan, and being reminded of his humanity, he could even go more evil by stating that he is “glad that Charles is dead” now. Because he and him are friends and were always fighting for the same cause, and yes Magneto did some extreme things, but this had a chance to continue his actions from the X2 movie in a meaningful way. Where he reaches his breaking point with humanity.

They should've let Mystique stay a mutant throughout the movie. I hated when she lost her powers, and she should've fought alongside Magneto which could've shown a greater side of her mutant powers. I also feel that they could've explored the other mutants instead of focusing on only Wolverine.

We never saw or spoke to one another much after, I would find out years later he had committed suicide and I can only assume that X-Men: The Last Stand was to blame.

Honestly the mutant cure plot line makes a lot more sense for this movie when you look at the story arc of the trilogy. A good adaptation of the Dark Phoenix Saga could make for an excellent film, but it really needs its own space to develop. That's a big problem with this movie overall; a whole bunch of stuff is thrown at us and not developed well or at all. Honestly, from the trailers I thought Angel was going to get full character development in this movie, and he ends up being basically dropped in as a "Look, this is a plot point!" device. By the time the movie was over I really had no connection with the character. Scott's death should have been a big deal that impacted the rest of the film, but it comes off as shrug-worthy for both the audience and the characters. Oh, and also they decided that the caring mentor Professor X that we'd grown attached to in the previous installments in the this trilogy was just going to be kind of an asshole now for no apparent reason. There are hints of what made the previous films watchable such as Rogue's difficult relationship with her mutation, but a lot of The Last Stand felt like the Michael Bay version of X-Men to me; big and noisy and empty.

You're a bit more generous to this movie than I was. When I saw it in theaters, not knowing how the plot arcs went in the comic books, I felt like it was an okay political allegory A-plot that was hijacked by the B-plot when Dark Phoenix got upset that not enough of the story was revolving around her. I know some people swear by Jean Grey, but I just didn't like her throughout the original X-Men trilogy.

I agree with the Fox playing catch up, everybody accuses DC of rushing to the Justice League (which they were) but everyone ignores that Fox and Sony had the rights to some of the biggest comic book characters for almost 25 years and did nothing, took them the Avengers to do 1 billion and see that different characters can still.make bank for them to start announcing other projects that weren't X-Men or Spider-Man

@I. Th. they had much more than just Spidey and X-Men, and the only thing they do was a spinoff prequel of Wolverine (I don't know if it was as answer of Iron Man and Hulk, but I know they wanted others about THAT Deadpool and Gambit), and it took them a leaked trailer that was well received for them to do the New Deadpool, plus announcing New Mutants, Multiple Man, Kitty Pride and so on. Sony was the same, now they are doing Venom, Morbius and all this other characters they had the rights two decades ago

There’s too many good ideas in here for it to be bad, but this movie really does rush through everything. Mystique protecting Magneto from the cure only to be abandoned is an awesome scene. The deaths make the movie feel like a climactic conflict. It also plays into a terrible future that needs to be changed in DOFP. Magneto lifting the bridge is the kind of jaw dropping spectacle I want out of movies like this. Even if it isn’t the most efficient way to get his army there, this is a movie! I wanna see cool shit like that. Magneto getting cured is also a perfect way to end his trilogy storyline. It’s quite poetic even if it didn’t end up lasting. Wolverine being the only one who can withstand the Phoenix force and having to walk through her disintegrating him is one of the coolest CBM moments ever. It’s a moment that really sticks with you after the movie.

I just recently re-watched this movie, and it wasn't as bad as I remembered it. I don't have any attachment to any other version of these characters, never having read the comics and only giving the 90's animated series a go this year (2021) when I saw it was on Disney+, so I don't know anything about how these characters could have been or what storylines were missed out on. It is for sure noticeable that they wanted to do something that never happened with Jean, as she pretty much only kills Scott and the professor but otherwise does nothing until the very end, where she is dangerous for about 1 min before dying again, and the last battle is a bit over the top, but it was definitely enjoyable, and does pose some questions for the viewer considering the cure. On one hand, can you "cure" a genetic mutation? Should it be considered some kind of decease? On the other hand, does someone like Storm, who looks perfectly normal and have full control of her powers, have the right to tell someone like Rogue, who sucks the life-force out of anything she touches, not to take the cure?

When Disney gets round to putting the X-Men in the MCU they should wait until a third or fourth movie to recast Wolverine and Magneto. Both have been played brilliantly in the past and the former left an emotional impact on the genre that's still too fresh. They should instead make Storm and Cyclops the leads, flesh out the rest of the cast such as Rogue, Gambit, Kitty and Jubilee (possibly her vampire version to make Blade tonally possible later on), to make them more interesting and resemble their comic and animated versions. Also this would allow audiences to focus on other X-Men villains who are not Magneto, Phoenix and Apocalypse until they can do them justice.

I think the biggest problem with the movie, but also most X-Men movies, was cramming in too many characters and not doing enough with most of them (the first two movies were the best at not having too many characters relative to the runtime). TLS also gave way too little attention, let alone focus, to Jean and her relationships with Storm and, obviously, Cyclops.

Watching this actually gives me a LITTLE bit more hope for Dark Phoenix. I mean it's still Fox so I have plenty of doubts, but perhaps the absence of the mutant cure will make a more faithful adaptation of the Dark Phoenix storyline, therefore a more focused movie. Plus the absence of Wolverine likely means the other X-Men will get more screen time and hence personality. I personally liked how X1&2 made Wolvie the main character. In a time where comic books were basically dead to most people, it makes sense that we have one recognizable and (more or less) relatable character to be our connection to the rest of these stranger characters with more wacky powers. In time of course it got to be much as the other X Men started getting the short end of the stick but it was a fine idea. Food for thought: X3 was a terrible end to the trilogy (not a BAD movie but certainly didn't live up to the mastery that was X2) but then we got First Class. Apocalyse is trilogy finale trial 2 and that also wasn't very good (had it's moments but didn't live up to DOFP). So maybe that means Dark Phoenix is actually gonna be good. And if it isn't....well... New Mutants might still happen and a horror themed X Men movie sounds pretty good to me XD

Saw the film twice when it came out partly because I wanted to see the post credits scene and see it with other family members. It was perfectly watchable but quite incoherent and inconsistent with the trilogy’s peak which was X2. Days of Future Past rectified the mistakes of this movie but even there they changed the importance of Bishop and Cable’s roles for other actors’ screentime. I don’t think Shadowcat’s powers being used to phase Logan’s consciousness through time made sense.
