in case no one's commented this yet, it's really interesting to know that the very existence of Mockingjays themselves are a big middle finger to the capitol. Jabberjays were birds genetically engineered by the capitol to be able to copy exact human speech, in order to spy on the districts back during the war and report back rebel secrets. But the rebels caught on quickly, and started feeding false info to the jabberjays, to the point where the capitol stopped creating them and killed the existing ones. Unfortunately for the capitol, some remained in the wild of the districts, and many mated with mockingbirds. This created the mockingjay, a species the capitol never intended to exist, that survived in spite of them, able to replicate human singing. (Not sure why they just whistle in the movies, but I'm 99% sure in the books they could sing like people minus the words). So the symbol of the mockingjay itself represents survival in spite of the capitol's intention. Thriving against their will.

One thing they don’t point out in the movies that they do in the books… when they pull Katniss away to go back into the games, she has every intention of dying this time around. Her plan is to ensure that Peeta survives. That’s why she’s upset that she doesn’t get to say goodbye to Prim & her mom. Because she doesn’t believe she’ll ever see them again. Also, when she dances with Plutarch, he pulls out a pocket watch that has a Mockingjay symbol on it. He’s giving her a clue about the arena. Obviously, they can’t show that in the movie because it gives everything away. And they don’t explain it in the first movie, but they ranked Katniss an 11 to put a target on her. It wasn’t just because she earned it. They wanted her dead. In the second one, they both receive a ranking of 12. Also, there is a song that Katniss sings in the next one that you need to go look up the lyrics from the book. It’s called The Hanging Tree. They change the lyrics a bit from the books but the meaning of the song is super dark.

@DarWeezy2 AHHHHH thank you!! Some good info. Yeah, the title of The Hanging Tree alone sounds pretty grim. And I'm thinking, "yeah yeah, I know, I know.." But when I see actual details like what you wrote that are so interesting, I'm like, "Holy sh*t, I need to read these books!" lol

@@DavidvsFilm Most definitely do for Potter and Hunger Games, I'd say LotR too, as it is a masterpiece, but it is harder to get into, Tolkien being a linguist and inventing complete languages for his stories. Harry Potter books age in complexity and tone with the age of the protagonists, so the first few are super easy to digest and then the series matures and gets more complex and darker. Hunger Games is fairly straightforward and written for 16-20 year old audiences in general, but without spoiling anything, has a very culturally relevant message overall I think. LotR starts you out on complexity and details that are daunting to some readers, including me initially, but once I finally went in on it, it was a complete treat. Maybe read the Hobbit first, it's a little bit lighter, and is a prequel anyway.

And if I’m not mistaken Peter lost a leg in the first games when he was bit by that dog thing and that’s why they fell when he came out on the snow. They don’t mention it at all in the movies and I think it’s interesting. They play up the love story a little bit but they don’t go into detail about actually how intense the love triangle was in the books.

Its never explained in the movies, but Haymitch won a quarter quell. He won the 50th hunger games and since each quarter quell is special they make different rules. So for this one they pull from the existing victors, for the second (the one Haymitch won) each district sent two boy and two girls for a total of 48 tributes, and for the first quarter quell the districts had to vote who to send instead of it being luck of the draw.

I always saw the Victory Tour as more like a cruel version of an army letter, ie "you should be proud that your son/daughter died for this great cause, in such an honourable way." These vulnerable families who've lost, sometimes their youngest child or the family bread-winner, then have to cheer for the Victor who killed or at least outlived that child.

Also something I wish they shown was how close all the victors actually were. Haymitch genuinely cares about the other victors because they are all friends and he is conflicted because he doesn’t want Peeta and katniss to die but he doesn’t want them killing the other victors either. In the movie he doesn’t seem bothered by them much, describing Finnick as a peacock even though he doesn’t do that in the book but I guess they want to make the audience see him a certain way at first since you don’t hear into katniss’ mind. During the training the victors weren’t trying to intimidate each other giving katniss looks either, instead they were all talking and helping each other. Even the victors from 1 and 2 and they were all joking around and making it obvious they are done with the whole games. For their individual assessments they were all joking saying they’re just going to model, or take a nap and things like that. Which is also why Peeta decided to paint a picture of rue to piss the gamemakers off. Then katniss made a noose which she learned from finnick to hang up the doll of Seneca crane. I know there’s not much time but I think it would’ve been nice to see the unity of the victors more.

Know what you mean, but honestly, I was kind of glad in the end we didn't see more unity in the beginning because there was a cathartic moment when we realized that it was not just one or two of Haymitch's friends that were with them, but more than haIf of them were with Peeta and Katniss , came into the games to actually help them. Then I realized it was more than a one-on-one struggle between victors and something bigger was a'foot. Made me even more invested in the outcome. I read all the books and was very impressed at how close to the plot and emotional thread they stayed throughout all four movies. I bought all four and re-watch them often :)

@@deltadaze6836 I wasn’t even talking about the games tbh, I just mean I think it would be nice to just see how together you victors were. Even the ones who had nothing to do with the rebellion you know? The way they’d show off and then look at Katniss was kind of cringe to me. It’s like they’re trying too hard and it’s like the first games where they’re all trying to intimidate each other when that isn’t their game anymore. I think it would be a nice contrast and Katniss line when she says ‘how are we going to kill these people’ would make more sense in that context.

The Quarter Quells are a special kind of Hell for the districts every 25 years. . Haymitch was in the 50th Hunger Games, where 2 male and 2 female tributes were reaped from each district. For 25, the residents of the districts had to vote for the 2 tributes. Quite the coincidence that 75 was tributes reaped from previous Victors just when a previous Victor needs to be eliminated without making her a martyr, as just executing her would have done.

Katniss' mother was the daughter of a merchant family of apothecaries. (Katniss'father was a coal miner, so her mother "married down" so to speak) She brought her knowledge of medicine with her to the poorest part of 12 and used to treat neighbors and others who couldn't afford even the apothecaries (almost NO ONE could afford doctors) with what she could. She taught Prim, and Prim took over after their father died and her mother sank into a deep depression. *wheeze* When Finnick asked Katniss "what happened to the pretty little girl dresses" he was referring to the poofy yellow gown she wore the previous year at her victory interview with Ceaser. It was a deliberate fashion choice by Cinna, light and floaty, and (described in the book) as looking like she was wearing candlelight. Still the girl on fire, but soft, and little girl like. An innocent, harmless, non-threatening little girl dress. (Remember, she was 15 at the time. Or 16.) Trying to downplay her to the Capitol and specifically Snow, as they were angry with her for....well, everything at that point. But now that she has "nothing to lose", she has no need to be the little girl anymore. *deep breath* These are long comments to type out on mobile. The Quarter Quells are supposed to be different, each with a particularly cruel twist. The first Quarter Quell's twist was that the Districts had to VOTE on which tributes to send. ("As a reminder that it was the Districts CHOICE to rebel against their Capitol, each District must choose blah blah blah blah....") So the tributes going in went with the knowledge that their own people had sent them. The second Quarter Quell (won by Haymitch) featured not two tributes from each District, but four. ("As a reminder that TWICE as many District citizens died for every Capitol soldier, each District must send TWICE as many blah blah blah...") And the third Quarter Quell supposed to be......no one really knows. The book is from Katniss perspective so of course it doesn't say. In a deleted scene from the movie, Plutarch is seen going down into the vault, finding the envelope with the written instructions for QQ 75 from the original organizers of the Hunger Games, and replacing it, thus ensuring the pool of "eligible applicants" would include Katniss. I guess he did that to at least give her a pretty good chance to survive, rather than letting Snow execute her directly. Plutarch is the most fascinating character in the series, in my opinion. God I can't wait for you guys to see Mockingjay 1 and 2. Part 1 is my favorite of the whole series.

This is where I feel the series REALLY kicks off. The production and the acting is all vastly above the first movie and it keeps getting better. J-Law just feels so RAW in this. I like how they do Katnis and Peta relationship, you can see its progression very clear, it's not your typical "we went through something and now we're forever in love" movie relationship. They do the "triangle" subtle enough, you can see how Katnis doesn't really want to think about it. If I remember, it was even more subtle in the books, only hinted at not really there. Reminder: Red Sparrow and Mother for more J-Law.
@DavidvsFilm
@DavidvsFilm Жыл бұрын
Haha thanks for the reminders on Red Sparrow and Mother (especially Sparrow). Concerning the love triangle aspect, and especially her and Peeta, I don't know if it's the writing, J-Law's acting (probably), the directing, or a combination, but I love how they portray Katniss as both so strong and independent, yet still soft and vulnerable- to a degree- when it comes to romance. It's so hard to strike that balance and not look awkward or lopsided, but she does it perfectly.

Dear David! Dear Marc! How you doing? It's been a while! I liked this saga a lot when it came out in books, and after that I liked it even more as a movie series! Every Quarter Quell has a bunch of twist for the reaping, and we’re created by the founders of the Hunger games, the 3 Quarter Quells so far we’re: - 1st (25th HG): “As a reminder to the rebels that their children were dying because of the choice to initiate violence, every district had to vote on who would compete.” As a reminder that they were responsible for the Hunger games) - 2nd (50th HG): “As a reminder to the rebels that two rebels died for each Capitol citizen, every district was required to send twice as many tributes”, 4 tributes for each district (2 boys and 2 girls) - This were Haymitch HG. - 3rd (75th HG): We never found out which was the original twist, because this was arranged by Snow to get Katniss killed, the original was destroyed by Heavensbee in a deleted scene in a room of 80 lockers (each one a quarter quell), which mean that the founders expected at least over 2,000 hunger games. David is right, Haymitch is a victor, he was in the 50th hunger games, and as in this movie, it was rhe 2nd Quarter Quell, where his strategy was to wait for his opponent to fling her weapon at him, and the force field hurl it back and he just ducked. His family (mother, brother) and girlfriend were killed by Snow a month after his victory. Effie is not a victor, but she was a mentor of District 12, her job was the draw of the tributes during the reaping and escort them to the capitol, but you are right. It’s an amazing saga, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! Hope the 3rd and 4th reaction video is close 🙊🙊🙊 See you soon guys!

Because Snow wanted Katniss to die but couldn’t outright kill her, Heavensby gave him the idea to draw the names from the existing pool of victors, in district 12’s case knowing katniss would be the only name in the female bowl. Well that is an overstretch of the story. Katniss doesn’t care about love. She is only concerned about survival and keep Prim, and her mother fed. She doesn’t have time to care about anything else. In the books they never kiss out of her will. Only when she needs to push him to keep him alive. She always thought that she world never marry. She would never put her children to this hell. Peet’s ends up getting inside of her skin out of the goodness of his character and because of time. Because he was patient and understanding.
@bondvabond
@bondvabond 6 ай бұрын
@@MTech07 That's the thing though, Katniss tells herself she does not have time or care for romance, but that doesn't mean she can't fall in love. Katniss, as a character, is distrusting due to her trauma and having to step up to take care of her family at age 12. After her dad dies, she stops singing and rarely shows emotion. But where do her best moments come from? They all happen when she lets her compassion take over and lowers her guard a bit. In the cave, she thinks about wanting to draw the shutters closed so that she can be loving without it being for show. Peeta is one of the few people who can make her genuinely smile, even in the first book. Him bringing up the memory of her singing at school highlights that he remembers who she is behind all those walls. Katniss herself is a compassionate, caring person. She would be open to love were it not for the circumstances. She has built up walls around herself to protect her and her family from any harm, as she sees compassion as a weakness, but it is actually her greatest strength. She never says she doesn't want kids, she says she doesn't want them if the Games exist. You mention that during the books, she never kisses Peeta out of her will. This is true except for two cases. Once in the cave and once on the beach. Both times, she wants more. When she injures herself and Peeta takes care of her, they work together on the plant book and she starts seeing small things about him. This is when I believe she actually falls in love, whether she realises it or not. Love does not care if you want to feel it or not. You can have as many guards up as you want, but love will grow if you like the person. Whether you act on anything is up to you, but I disagree with saying she doesn't care about love, because if you look at all the times her mask slips you realise she cares a lot more about others than she portrays.

Making Katniss get angry because of Cinna was exactly their goal. If you pay attention you see that makes Katniss angry enough to immediately want to go for the bow and arrows, but remember what Haymitch and Peeta told her not to do in the first movie and how that went? It's not a good choice to go for the weapons, it's the most dangerous thing to do and where the most tributes die, but Katniss was mad bc of Cinna so couldn't think straight and went for the biggest risk, it is a good strategy to get her killed in the games, and yeah, it went good for her this time but it's a great plan, especially when you realise the only reason for her to not die there isn't even luck or skill, but bc meanwhile the revolution was happening behind Snow's (and Katniss's) back, otherwise Finnick would have just killed her there and that would have been it, or some other tribute (as someone who agreed with protecting Katniss for the revolution, just wouldn't care about that and would have killed her at any chance, and that's half of them so it wouldn't be weird if some of those had a chance then).

There’s a bit of personal backstory for Katniss’s family that gets mostly left out for time and focus reasons but that really informs where she starts emotionally and how she is about relationships. Her mother and father married for love (including her mother giving up the chance at a Rich for 12 marriage for it) and were deeply happy... until he died in a mine collapse before Katniss was old enough to be entered in the Hunger Games. In the first movie when Katniss tells her mother “you can’t go away again” this is what she’s talking about- when her father died, her mother fell into a catatonic depressive state that almost killed them all through starvation until Peeta and his bread gave Katniss enough hope and energy to try illegal hunting and step up to keep the family running. So Katniss’s experience of love and family is that it kills you on the inside and then sends your kids to the Hunger Games.

I HIGHLY recommend the books. The audiobooks are phenomenal. More stuf happens in the books because obviously mo is only have so much time and money. Like for one thing peta fully loses his leg and ends up with a prosthetic leg in book one. And they fully cut out a character who actually ads a lot of backstory and lore to the story. I won't say all the other stuff because I don't like spoiling but fr you should either read or listen to the books.

I LOVE this series (books and movies), but this story hurt my gut because I knew that this is simply a microcosm of our current reality. You know that if it would mean peace and prosperity for some, they would sanction this kind of insanity in a heartbeat. And it's really not ALL those in the districts (even the Capital) who would be open to it, but the few who scrounged the power to feed their egos, souls and comforts on the backs of, and with the blood of, innocents.

Katniss' new style/clothing is explained in the book. Victors should have talents that they showcase when they visit the Capitol as Mentors. Katniss' chosen talent (chosen for her because her only realy talent is hunting, which is illegal in 12) was fashion design, and Cinna was basically doing all the work and she would put her name on a few pieces, for show.

There waas a story to the blood in the champagne. Presudent snow was so ruthless at killing off rivals that he once even drank poison from the same glass to avert suspicion. But it left him with oetmenant open sores in his mouth. Also hammich was the victor from the last quarter quell. Each 25 year game had a theme for hammach's game there were 2 boys and 2 girls from each district . So he had to defeat twice as many others. Mags!! She thought of finnick as a son - knew he was in love with annie - who was so traumatized from her games she almost lost her mind , and going back would hsve finished her as well as pitting her against finnick. Mags figured she had lived her life and volunteered kniwing she wouldnt make it. Then sacrificing herself to force finnack to go on and save pita for katniss. Effie wasnt a victor. The victors like hammich became "mentors" to each new years trubutes ... and watched them die...enter gammich's self-medicating. but since most tributes were minors the capital also assigned chaperones who were part of the capital life not the district - thats what effie was

The Quarter Quell isn't per definition an all star edition. If it was, they'd have seen it coming. But also, the 75th Hunger Games marked the very first time there even was both a male and a female victor for every district. There's just something special about a Quarter Quell. Haymitch won the 50th games, which I'm pretty sure featured 48 tributes instead of 24. An all star victor tournament was just Snow's evil plan to fill in this third Quarter Quell.

I find that each movie gets better and better. The first movie sets everything up so it gives you a lot of information in a short span of time and then each subsequent movie builds on the one before and none of them disappoint. Enjoy the last two movies. I read the books before the movies came out and except for a few details (some of them give additional depth to the story) they did a great job of following the plot of the books almost exactly.

Effie was the official escort for the District 12 Tributes their year (like Cinna was their stylist). Since Haymitch is meant to be their mentor for the Games (as someone from the same district who understands how they live) specifically, it makes sense that you need an escort from the Capitol to help explain the social weirdness of the place and how all the other stuff goes.

Not sure if you’ll see this, but not all quarter quells are all star games. The first quarter quell (25th games) each district voted for whoever they were going to send into the games. The second quarter quell (50th, AND when haymitch won) there were twice as many tributes as usual (48 people). Then the 3rd quarter quell was this all stars thing. They just add a special twist into the games.

the quells aren’t always an all-star game with the victors. in the 25th games the tributes were voted in by their districts instead of being reaped. in the 50th games (the one haymitch won) there were twice as many tributes, so 4 from each district.

This is my favorite out of all of them for sure. There is a great video that goes over Haymitch's story that explains his character/the stuff that got left out of the book (Link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZqqgeK1jl5inf6M.html | MovieFlame - The Entire Life of Haymitch Abernathy Explained (From the Books)). I would definitely watch it to understand him more moving forward! Also, I will forever be Team Peeta because the movies make Gale a bit better than he really is (ex. him getting whipped for saving someone vs. just getting caught trying to sell game not realizing the new peacekeeper would open the door), and he constantly manipulates Katniss by playing the super sad guy who's girl left him card, and it's really unfair because 1) they weren't actually together-together, and 2) she has to say like 1,000 times that she can't even think about dating anyone right now with all that is going on and he doesn't really respect the burden on her shoulders by constantly asking her to choose. EDIT: Also, Effie was assigned there, but I do remember she hated it because 12 is poor/gross/never wins, and Haymitch always embarrasses her during the reaping. Cinna was a new stylist and I believe he requested 12 to make a difference.

I haven't seen anyone mentioned this the comments and I don't believe that it's mentioned in the movie that I can remember.... But they did mention that Finnick was fourteen when he won his games which made him the youngest to ever win the games... He was also very popular. And, unfortunately, due to that popularity President Snow took advantage of that and blackmailed Finnick after he had won his games. He forced him into prostitution under the threat that his family would be harmed. So that's why he's SUPER charming and flirty because he's literally been groomed to act that way since he was fourteen years old. Because as they've shown in the movies the Victors never truly win... they're still tortured throughout the years by the capital. And it's been a couple of years since I read the books almost a decade now...but I have seen people talk about Finnick and his storyline online in recent-er years and someone mentioned that he never took money from the people that he was forced to sleep with but he did take secrets/information from them. And people have to assume that SOMEONE was getting paid for those people to spend time in his company... But it wasn't Finnick getting that money. So yeah, he's a really interesting(and conventionally attractive) guy and of course has had a tragic life as most Victors do. He's a lot of people's favourite character by the end of the book series.

Gale's behavior gets to me a bit, and while I may be biased because I'm definitely more of a fan of Katniss and Peeta, it's made more clear in the books that Katniss and Gale aren't and haven't been "dating" or literally anything remotely like that. They were friends and hunting partners, then Gale started getting feelings for her. That's why in this movie, the kiss that Snow caught on tape, he said "I wanted to at least once" or something to that effect. So her kiss with Peeta in the first games was her very first kiss with *any* boy. I get him being jealous a tiny bit *after* she kissed him while he was on the table - anyone might take that as a romantic gesture - but before that, he really had no real right in being upset at her actions in the games or anything, even if she had realized in the first games that she did have feelings for Peeta and if it wasn't an act. She obviously starts getting confused in this movie, but she still doesn't have real *romantic* feelings for Gale with the whole "Do you love me?" and the "Maybe if things were different" response. She's going through a whole lot, she's not even really thinking about that, but it's almost like that's 99% of what he's thinking about and it's just 🤦🏻‍♀ GET IT TOGETHER GALE! lol. I feel like the kiss on the beach between Katniss and Peeta when she told him she needed him was absolutely genuine though, and probably her first kiss with someone that she genuinely has more romantic and less friendshippy vibes with. And come on, how could you not fall in love with someone who put *your* loved ones in his special jewelry item that was made for him just in case you needed to know why you needed to win. Just, ugh, so sweet. I'm so glad you guys are watching this and so happy you're loving it! Can't wait to see the next 2 parts! 💕🥰 Also: lol f'ing Mavis Beacon 😂 I remember using that in 1996 or 7, when I was 12 or 13 right before we were able to get our 56k internet finally. We even had to buy a new computer because the one I was playing Mavis Beacon and some of those older video games you didn't need internet for on was literally too old to install a modem in it.

😊 okay about Gail. That was different in the book they weren't burning down the hob aka the black market and there was no woman being attacked. What happened is they had already replaced the head peacekeeper in the area who was a customer of Gail's who would constantly be buying his wild turkeys so he went hunting, got a turkey, went to bring it to that guy and the new head peacekeeper caught him red handed with a wild animal and hunting wasn't supposed to be allowed so he was caught essentially poaching. So what they did was they tied him to that thing in the public square with his catch above him as basically what his crime was and they were just beating him with a whip by the time katniss got there, he was unconscious and so we're several other people who tried to stop the new guy saying hey he's not out. He's been punished enough. You're going to kill him and that was very much his intention to beat him to death
