In defence of Haymitch, he had to survive his own hunger games, the 50th anniversary so that year they doubled the tributes to 48. So he not only had to survive while 47 other people died, for the 24 years afterwards he had to train two tributes from district 12, all of whom died. So he’s crass, and rude, and self medicates with alcohol to dull the pain and trauma.

I love rewatching this through your eyes. You are the first reactor I've seen who realizes why Haymitch is drinking and not engaging with them. The horror of how many years he's been forced to usher two children to their deaths ever single year is overwhelming. I don't think I could have done it. So when that spark of hope hits him from Katniss it is so impactful to me but nobody else ever seems to notice. Oh, some extra points: Notice how Haymitch arranged for Katniss to be sent medicine after she was burned but Peeta was left badly hurt for days? Haymitch had to make a decision about who of them he was trying to save with the limited funds he had. Him and Peeta really tried/plotted to keep her alive and they continue to do so in the following movies. District 11 (another very poor district) all pitched in to send Katniss a bit of bread in gratitude after Rue's death. They revolted not because she had died but because Katniss reminded them that the districts are all alike and the capitol is the enemy. Katniss chose to go out of her way in the middle of the games to give Rue a funeral, to be respectful and compassionate and to mourn. You’re right at the end. Peeta wasn’t lying in the interview. He’s had a huge crush on Katniss since they were kids. Thats why he gave her the bread. Everything he said and did in the arena was genuine. Katniss didn’t have feelings for him before the games. She was faking. But as the games went on and she got to know him she starts to develop some feelings. They aren’t nearly as strong as Peeta’s yet. But she does care for him by the end of the games. Also gale and her aren’t a couple. He just also has a crush on her and is jealous. But he’s a known player in district 12 so Katniss never realized before the games. He was always messing around with other girls.

You hit the nail on the head for this series. It is just the beginning. We viscerally watched 22 kids die, but hundreds or thousands are starving and oppressed by the systems in place all the time.

Love these films, excited to see your reaction! About the "angry" stare Katniss gives Peeta at the beginning of the movie, it's because she knows she owes him her life and the lives of her family (as he saved them from starvation by giving them the bread) and she hates owing someone. Plus, she sees that he is genuinely sweet and caring, and hates the fact that she might have to kill him in order to return home to her family. As I see it, it's more so the stare of resolve, determination, and getting ready to do what it takes to survive regardless of how you may feel about it.

In the book, there’s more sympathy given to the career tributes, for example when Clove dies (Thresh bashes her head in with a rock but she dies fairly similarly to how she did in the film), Cato actually finds her and he starts begging for her not to die. Also Cato’s death is downright horrifying in the book: the mutts take hours to eat him alive and in the end he pretty much asks Katniss to kill him.

As much as Rues death is hard to watch I kinda feel for Cato. He was just playing the game he was born for. And it’s hard to face in your final moments that all that training and all those people you killed were for nothing.

About the climbing trees thing: being able to climb isn’t a common skill in the districts (except for 7), but Katniss is able to climb and survive so well because her father and her would sneak into the forest together. He taught her how to hunt, climb, swim, and differentiate between different plants. That’s why at the end of the movie they can’t just climb a tree because Peeta probably doesn’t know how or at least not effectively.

The salute that people keep giving is one meant as a sign of respect usually reserved for funerals. In District 12 it’s an important traditional in funerals for workers killed in the mines.

We have an Effie lover from the get go, I love it. Some reactors immediately hates on her. The three fingers salute is uniquely from district 12, a gesture of admiration, gratitude and saying goodbye to someone you love. They gave that salute to a tribute for The Hunger Games for the first time too because they all knew Katniss for her games that sustains their black market with meat as well as her bravery for being the first to ever volunteer. “It’s Mr. Bennet! From Pride and Prejudice.” I’m putting a pin on this. 😅 Good catch on Haymitch not asking for a drink and paying attention before the individual evaluation then of their team toasting for Katniss and not for Peeta.

They do send food to the districts but the people in the districts have to pay for them (all of the districts are kept in abject poverty, not just District 12). Specifically each time you ask them for food your name is put in for the drawing for tributes. The more times you ask for food, the more times your name is put in. Ask too much and your name is in the pot a lot and you are more likely to be chosen at the next Reaping. That's why it's called "The Hunger Games." You have your name in just once and you starve or you get fed and have your name in more often. How long can you go hungry for?

The district that rebelled was district 11, where Rue and Thresh were from. Despite 12 being a poorer district than 11, life in 11 was moderately worse because of the strong peacekeeper presence, making beatings and whippings commonplace. The peacekeepers in 12 are more lax and some of them even purchase Katniss's illegally obtained meats.

You posed a good/interesting question about what would some of their actual survival skills be outside their own specific skill set. Bc you know someone like Katniss has had to learn basic survival and how to be resourceful as well bc of where she is from. On top of having a sense of compassion for others bc she knows what loss and grief feels like. Also, Cinna is the absolute GOAT. Love his character!

As brutal as the movies are, just know that their injuries are actually far less than the books. Katniss actually went deaf in one ear from the explosion of the camp supplies and Peeta lost his leg to infection from his wound and had a prosthetic through the rest of the series. When Thresh saves Katniss from the girl at the cornucopia, he bashed her head in with a rock "to the point that she was unidentifiable" instead of the one wall slam. The mutts (dog creatures at end of games) were actually created using the dead tributes eyes and facial features. I love how we can have these movies dulled down quite a bit but still get the full book message. Keep up the good reactions man!

Interested to see your reaction to "Catching Fire." That is my favorite one. The scene where Haymitch convinces Crane to do the rule change is interesting. It's not in the books because they are strictly from Katniss' POV. But it means Haymitch totally out-smarted Crane and got him to do something that ultimately lead to his death. It’s very unfortunate that the scene showing District 11 send Katniss a sponsor of bread was cut. Not only did it (literally) show how moved the District was by Katniss’s kindness for Rue, but was a historic moment, as no District had ever sent a sponsor to a contestant that was not from their own district, showing how much hope and inspiration for uprising Katniss was causing, unbeknownst to her.

The first thing I saw for this movie was a picture of Effie Trinket, and I immediately _knew_ the movie was going to be well adapted from the book. She’s perfectly casted.

This is, unfortunately, one of those movies where you _really_ need to read the book. Suzanne Collins's worldbuilding is FANTASTIC, but the story never drags or feels like she's info-dumping. The book is divided up into 3 different 3-act plays structurally, and all from Katniss's first-person POV. I highly recommend this one. (Normally I recommend the audiobook versions because they are great for listening to while you clean house, drive somewhere, sit at home and edit, whatever. I don't in this case because the narrator [it isn't narrated by the author] is definitely older than 16, but the way she voices Katniss's thoughts and insights is way too plaintive and a _little_ bit on the whiny side.) *No Spoilers:* The country where Katniss lives used to be America, but has now become Panem. The name Panem derives from the Latin phrase Panem et circenses, which literally translates into 'bread and circuses'. The phrase itself is used to *describe entertainment used to distract public attention from more important matters* they should notice. Furthermore, by the government providing ample food, entertainment and protection, the citizens would give up their political rights. They are literally holding Gladiator Games, just like the ancient Romans used to. For presumably the majority of its existence, Panem's central government operated as a totalitarian dictatorship and police state with society, particularly in the Capitol, modeled heavily on ancient Rome (which is why they have Roman names like Coriolanus [the president], Cinna, Ceasar, and hell, even Effie's name is actually Euphemia). The outlying Districts were subservient to the Capitol, expected to provide significant economic and material services in exchange for protection provided by the Capitol's armies of Peacekeepers, largely at the heavy expense and detriment to the districts' populace. This uneven and unequal relationship was brutally enforced on the districts for several years, culminating in the outbreak of a civil war known as the First Rebellion, led by District 13, center of Panem's military-industrial complex. After three years of conflict, the rebellion collapsed with the destruction of District 13, bringing about the Dark Days. And then, to distract the population from fixating on the inequalities and possibly creating empathy in the Capitol for the Districts--and creating ever more resentment in the Districts and a possible new rebellion--the Capitol created the Hunger Games, where 24 tributes would be sacrificed for the entertainment of the crowd. Because all through human history, there has been this sense that watching fights to the death is "cool." I'm sure all the citizens thought it was revolting at first, but after 74 years of the Capitol forcing people to watch (you do not have control over your own TV in this dystopia) and filling their heads with propaganda like the interview portion of the show where the tributes gush about the Capitol and they get to wear pretty clothes and be charming so you will root for them and hope they make it through...well, over time it just seeps into your brain. That's why Haymitch got so choked up, watching that family with the two little kids, and the boy gets a new toy sword and is so excited he immediately pretends to stab his little sister with it. The Games mean nothing to these privileged people aside from entertainment and money from betting. They don't know the hardship of living in the Districts, and their kids are never going to be chosen at random to fight each other to death. Katniss was EXTREMELY lucky that the setting for this games was a forest. They can create whatever environment they want; she says in the book that one year it was a desert, but that was the most unpopular year of the Games for the audience, because so many of the kids died of thirst right away. Katniss's father taught her how to hunt, *although it is illegal for them to do so* and how to forage for roots and berries and other plants in the forest. In any other setting, she might not have won, Tributes are not allowed to train before the Games except for the Career Tributes in Districts 1 and 2. As you get further out, you have people with less martial skills, but maybe with more survival skills related to their work.

Please note that Gale merely has a crush on Katniss and she wasn’t even aware of that at this point. So they weren’t dating. Plus, he’s a known player in the district. Those looks of pain were just him being possessive over someone who doesn’t belong to him. Also, it was not ALL an act with Peeta. She grew genuine feelings for him, which you seemed to pick up on in the moment but then disregard in your reflection. Of course it’s nowhere near the same level as Peeta’s feelings, but a seed was definitely planted! Glad that you were Team Peeta as a person regardless though! He’s my favorite character in the entire series.

Little thing pointed out to me was that fox girl (the red head who ate the berries) might've eaten them while knowing what they are. Early on when they were showing their skills, fox girl was identifying all plants correctly and efficiently.

That salute is the funeral salute in District 12, a form of saying goodbye. when she was reaped thats why the whole district saluted her, and she did the salute after Rue's funeral

I've said this in the past, but it's always true: Donald Sutherland plays a really good villain in President Snow. It's kind of the same paradox with Imelda Staunton/Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter: a delightful actor playing such a vile, despicable character.

I still feel like this is the best movie of the series. The others are good too, I suppose, but this one really kind of knocks one over the head to bring you into the world of Panem. After that, you're just dizzy the rest of the trip. I love a good dystopian tragedy.

One thing most of the people don't notice: the girl who died eating the poisonous berries Peeta picked (I don't remember her name) showed in the training period showed she was very smart and especially she knew plants well, but she wasn't strong. One thing she knew though was that only the strongest were left at that point. She probably didn't want to die painfully and decided to kill herself with the berries. Just my theory

President Snow is played by Donald Southerland - one of the greatest actors of our lifetime.

In the books the wolf mutt things that went after Cato,Katniss and Peeta were actually the dead tributes bodies turned into these Mutt creatures I wish they had kept it in the movie it would’ve made for a much more shocking scene that would’ve meant a lot more

Excellent reaction! I believe you are the first reactor that I’ve seen to really understand Hamish’s pain. We quickly come to realize that he drinks and distances himself because year after year he’s expected to mentor two teenagers who will ultimately die. I read the books before the movies came out. Something very impactful from the books that they did not portray in the movies was about those horrible dog-like things at the end. In the books, each one had the face of one of the fallen. So Katniss had to see a beast with the face of her little friend.

Rues death broke EVERYONES heart. Such an innocent child murdered.

In the book, Peeta lose his leg, he get a prosthesis tho after winning the game. But still they really toned down the horrifying stuff in the movie compared to the book. Like Cato is left being eaten by the dog thingies for hours before Katniss put him out of his misery.

In the books Peeta lost his leg from the cut hed recieved and those dogs at the end were modifiyed to lookike the other tributes its both a physical and psychological torture.

You were spot on with your observation about how Katniss honours Rue after she dies: The way she makes friendships across districts us very important, as part if the Capitols reasons for the games is to keep the districts hating each other: there will always be someone from another district who killed someones daughter/ sister /brother / friend etc... But Katniss befriended Rue, protected her, and mourned her death. In the book, district 11 (Rues district) had saved up to sponsor her some bread, and after she died, they sent the bread to Katniss instead. Never before had a district given a gift to a tribute from another district. So that is another act of rebellion on her part. To show the districts that they can befriend eachother. I don’t know if anyone has pointed it out yet, but Foxface (the red haired girl who died from eating the berries) was doing an excercise involving plants in the training montage - this shot implies that she knew what the nightlock berries were and that they were poisonous, making her death a suicide. This is an addition for the film adaptation, and I think it gives her character much more depth.

Haymitch is easily my favorite character, but man the guy has been THROUGH it. Just a rundown of his life before the books: -Born into poverty in District 12. -Selected for the 50th Hunger Games (A Quarter Quell in which 48 tributes were reaped instead of 24) at the age of just 16. -Has his district partner (Who saved his life early in the Games) die in his arms during a Mutt Attack. -Is badly wounded in the final showdown against an axe-wielding Career Tribute (From District 1 I think). -Wins the Games by using the force field surrounding the arena to ricochet the axe from his opponent back at them, thus killing them. -By using the Game-Makers own arena as a weapon, the Capitol is embarrased and humilated. So in retribution, President Snow orders his PeaceKeepers to murder Haymitch's entire family and his girlfriend. -As District 12's only living Victor, Haymitch is forced to train every single District 12 tribute reaped for the games (All of whom die). Yeah, it's no wonder Haymitch turned to Alcohol. I think most of us would too.

I absolutely adore these books, I should really read them again. The movies are similarly exceptional, especially considering conversion from page to screen. Snow is an antagonist of levels that few stories are blessed with, and I cannot wait for you to see just how calculated and cruel this world can be.

This film is so emotionally charged. It covers so many human characteristics. It also shows just how bad society can get if allowed to, the city that is all hedonistic, and entitled. And the other districts who are kept down economically, and basically treated as slaves, or cattle. At this same time it contains a love story. Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are so talented. It felt so odd though watching the little boy I had only known Josh as suddenly becoming such a mature, talented young man. Fabulous! The books are so good at drawing you into this world of dystopian mess, but the movie had such highly talented actors, and characters that can make you feel invested. I just noticed for the first time where they show the tributes on the map where they track them that 11 is right next to 12. Which means Rue was close to Katniss the whole time

I never put together what Haymitch had gone through over the years. What all the former winners have had to go through. Did Katniss save Haymitch by providing the hope she could win? The kids prepped in district one and two are competing for glory. Katniss and Peeta are there to survive. Competition vs Survival. Arrogance vs Determination. Interesting dichotomy. The books are amazing, I highly recommend them.

Regarding the scene where Katniss is showcasing her shooting. The reason she missed is the fact that this isn't her bow. The bow the capitol had provided most likely has a different draw strength required than the one Katniss usually uses. It's also made from different materials, so it is logical that Katniss would have to shoot it a bit before getting used to it. The fact that she hits bulls eye from the second shot just shows you how good she is.

I liked how you pointed out the moment with Cinna could have been the last bit of affection that Katniss knew. A couple people misinterpreted that scene with the kiss on the cheek as something inappropriate instead of what it was, Cinna just showing simple human or even fatherly care for a young human in a horrific situation.

The jump of your face going from smiling to concerned after Peeta yells "I have no chance of winning!" is SO funny to me lmaooo

I think Haymish always cared but watching District 12’s tributes get slaughtered over the years took a toll on him so he just drank it away. Not to mention the serious PTSD he’s suffered from surviving the games himself.

One other thing: The great irony of this story. For 74 years, everyone who pretended to be "likeable" abandoned their humanity in the arena. The unlikeable girl who could never truly pretend held onto it. And that brought the whole system crashing down.

Those dogs were even more terrifying in the book. If I remember correctly the dogs have the other tribute's eyes and wearing signs of what district the "dog" came from.

To this day, one of my favourite series, and I can still watch these films over and over and over. So good!!

i know im late to this but at 41:10 when cato says "im dead anyway, i always was right?" hes basically saying how he was born and raised into a district where he was taught that being in the hunger games and winning is the highest honor you can have which is why he killed so many people without mercy. hes saying that he was only ever born for one purpose, the hunger games. and even if he did win his whole life would be about the games and thats it. in the books, clove (the knife girl) and cato were very close they loved each other (either platonically or romantically idk, they probably knew each other well before the games even started) and when she was killed by thresh it was kinda like an "oh my gosh" moment for him and he realizes that everything that hes been raised to do and think was a lie. also in the scene where clove and katniss fight the reason why she was monologuing before killing katniss was because she had originally promised cato that if she got to kill katniss, she would give the audience a good show. btw in the books clove dies slowly not immediately like in the movies and cato holds her and begs her to stay with him until she dies, he then later goes to kill thresh because not only does thresh have cato's backpack but also as revenge for clove's death (again only in books not movie)

It was so fun watching your reaction and seeing how into it you were. It's mentioned in the books that the hand signal is unique to District 12 used during funerals as the final goodbye, similar to how we put flowers on the coffin or put a handful of dirt before it's lowered. So when Katniss became tribute it was their way of saying goodbye to her, but by the time Rue dies it becomes a multi-district symbol of solidarity that means "We will remember your sacrifice." That salute becomes even more sacred when you realize that the Capitol prevents communication between the districts to maintain order. Remember how President Snow said that a lot of the outlying districts are full of underdogs? What would happen if they all banded together? The only way they can is by being in contact and sharing a common cause.

I've never read the books(I need to along with the second book onwards of the HP series 😅) but this series is one of my top favorite YA films! I'm a hardcore Peeta stan/team Peeta(helps that I've had a crush on Josh Hutchinson since I was young, lol 😆). He's so kind and charismatic you can't help but get drawn in! I'm also so glad you actually understood that Peeta was serious when he confessed he had a crush on Katniss during the interviews! I've seen so many reactors thing he was only saying it so people liked him and would give him sponsors when I thought it was pretty obvious that wasn't what he was doing. He probably figured he would die in the arena and would rather tell her that way instead of leaving it unsaid, taking it to his grave. I also believe the whole 'I don't see a problem with getting a little help' scene in the train between him and Katniss was probably because Katniss doesn't like relying on others to help her so she wasn't expecting Peeta to throw her the burnt bread he was supposed to be giving to his families pigs(I think he actually burnt it on purpose in the books so his family would order him to throw it out and give him a chance to throw it to her because her and her Mom and sister where starving at that time(they had just recently lost her Dad). I'm not 100% on that since I've only seen other comments on it and haven't had a chance to read them myself 😅) and I also believe that I heard that Peeta's mom(/maybe family?) is kind of abusive to him(again, not 100% sure on that since I haven't read them myself) Also know that the books had some darker writing(like the "slaves" in the capital have their tongues removed(some, not all) and their bodies sold(some of the victors as well)) Anyway, so glad I have another reaction channel I can watch react to one of my top favorite YA film series! Catching Fire(the next movie) is my favorite I think in the movie series so can't wait for that one! Peeta in that one was just *Chefs kiss* for me 😁💜 (Sorry for grammar, spelling mistakes, or generally hard to understand points I was trying to get across! I'm dyslexic and autistic 😅)
