In our “The Hunt for Old Guns” series, we look at 19th century American firearms - the rare, the unusual, and the iconic. In this episode, we’ll talk about who collects old guns, what they collect, and why.
Antique American firearms are defined under current federal law as those manufactured before January 1, 1899. A lot of collectors draw the line at that date and for good reason. The date draws a sharp line between antique and modern guns.
It establishes a benchmark for the era at the end of the 19th century, when warfare began changing dramatically. Guns made before that date don’t normally require a federal firearms license to purchase - which makes them easier to transfer, ship, and transport.

For me, I got into guns from my dad and from video games, first gun I wanted was an AR like my dad and because it was in CoD4 as the M4. Never would've thought that asking for a Mosin M44 for Christmas one year would lead me to be buying Trapdoor Springfields, Gew 98s, and antique Winchesters on a monthly basis. Cheers to us shooters and collectors

I have my grandfather’s Colt model 1878 double barrel shotgun. It’s a 10-gauge with Damascus barrels and a 2 7/8 chamber. It is pre-1899. I also have his Winchester Model 1897 shotgun that is a 16-gauge. I think it was made in the1920’s. I love the stories which abound around them, and the history associated with them.

This collector loved the presentation. And smiled at seeing a commonly used drawing of part of the Alamo, flying an inaccurate Flag. But it's all good. Keep on collectin'.

I collect anything that catches my interest. My oldest knife is a field hospital machete from WW1 and my oldest firearm is a Colt Army Special that my great grandfather carried in WW1 as his sidearm. I got to fire it (once) recently at the range. It's still accurate and fully functional. I don't yet own anything older but my eyes are always open for something "new" to add to my collection.

I do for preservation, I primarily look for those that interest me & go on my wishlist, but there are others that give me an urge to buy them. Currently, the oldest guns I have is an Iver Johnson Arms & Cycle Works 410 Champion & a unrifled, unmarked training Japanese Type 38

I collect old guns and do have a federal firearms Collections and Relics license but, only buy ww2 or before guns. But I do buy anything of a historical nature for instance my 1878 Martini Henry rifles used in the Anglo Zulu Wars. I collect guns from many points in time why because I like the history behind each one. But, also the old guns I collect are made to function and are used on the rifle range.

Many of the old guns were made with craftsmanship that is seldom seen today. My favorites are the Marlin Ballards. I have 4 made in the 1880s and in excellent original condition, and 3 of those have factory special ordered features. I love the challenge of duplicating the ammunition they were made to shoot and yes, I shoot them all. The main things I look at are the bore, stocks and mechanical condition. These were not run of the mill frontier guns and quite expensive when new, so it’s not surprising they were well taken care of. I also have a ‘93 Marlin made in 1894, a Springfield Trap Door, ‘73 Winchester musket, ‘85 Winchester single shot 22, ‘97 Winchester shotgun, and a’ ‘94 Winchester made in 1923. The last 4 are technically not antiques made before 1899 but are continuations of earlier models. My prize rifle is an ‘1885 Winchester Schuetzen target rifle made around 1916 in mint condition with a Winchester A5 scope.

Because everything from a screwdriver to the smoke poles where built to last and built with more care back then. Idk there has always been some kinda connection to the old day's. Alot of appeal does come from some of the history. like the 1911 or a cap and ball derringer. Neither are million dollar collectors item's that everyone wants. But they do each tell a different story from different times.

I collect anything that is interesting and is a good deal. I believe I was 20 when I bought a Winchester 1892 from 1910 and a Stevens 235 double barrel from the early 1920s. I don't know if I'll ever own something from pre 1899. I'll have to just stumble upon it one day.
