It's Bourbon Night

10 ай бұрын

This has been a long time coming. We bring our dried-our 1792 Full Proof barrel back to life and then start making our IBNfinity Barrel. While doing so, we also create a "control" infinity bottle to compare to our double-barrel aged concoction to our non-double-barrel aged bottle. What conclusions will be drawn from all this?

For Christmas a few years ago I was given a whisky bullet. Nothing more then a piece of oak or any variety of wood for that matter but this was turned into the shape of a bullet and the purpose is to put it into a bottle. That made me think. Whiskey barrels are made of white oak of course because of the finer closed grain so they don’t leak. I turned up pieces of red oak because it is porous and then I heavily charred them with a tourch and blew them out when the char was right. I placed one into a bottle and placed said bottle next to the coffee maker. Every morning after starting the coffee I violently shook the bottle and did this for one month. Afterwords I poured the whiskey through a coffee filter and rinsed out the bottle and re filled. It looked like coffee but was very mellow. No harshness. After that I did it again and placed 5 char sticks into a bottle and did it for two months. That was more oak pronounced but very smooth and mellow! We have blind bourbon nights where everyone brings a bottle in a bag and the girls label and pour them. My friend brought a bottle one night that everyone thought was much better then the rest so he won. It turns out that he used some sticks that I gave him in that bottle! Really not fair but a neat experience. I watch you guys often. Very informative.👍

It really is a good experiment you should have a tasting every 3-6 months to see if it changes with the additional bottles you put in it 🥃

2 minutes in and my brain is spinning! We've aged our own homebrew in a whisky barrel and it was so good! As a youngster it was my 'job' to roll the barrels around the yard for my Dad and Uncle... who made 'Swish' as they called it.

Instead of three birds, one stone it's killing "Three bottles with one barrel?" at least in this instance. Such an interesting concept and I Look forward to more. You could always take what's left, give away 50 ML bottles on stream and get results back from a variety of folks. Just a thought!

I have to say it. Chad, you are the man! What a cool video. I love the way you think. The creativity is next level and the way you filmed everything was as good as anything I've seen on Netflix. This could have been a documentary. It's right up there with the Automat documentary which is a must watch for anyone who loves this type of content. Great job! Take a bow Chad. You've earned it.

Y’all crushed this episode! One of the best ones you’ve put out. The creativity was unmatched. For me, I don’t have the means for something on this a scale, but I loved how you showed those little staves at the end and even mentioned tho me small barrels to do at home, on my counter! The control with full 750ml… genius! Great content! I’d love to see this become a series, knowing it will be weeks and months before the next episode. Great job! Do you have any recommendations for a place or places I can order a smaller barrel from? Thanks!
@kenhunter2587
@kenhunter2587 10 ай бұрын
With the staves, rather than the more expensive 2 bottles from the same single barrel, just get 2 bottles off the shelf (can be same or different) and mix them (blender?). Then put them back in the bottles. One is a control and the other has the staves.

Really great episode! Listening to y’all talk about the contrast between the two and how they were each missing something the other had, I was just waiting for you to blend the control with the double-barreled version a la last year’s Parker’s Double Barreled Blend that you were such big fans of.

I do the same thing. I have a 15gal chinkipin barrel from a local craft distillery. I dump all the unfinished bourbon and rye that I no longer care for and let in mingle and use it for cocktails, but it's even a decent neat pour. So far the sum is better than its parts.

Wish I had the space (and time, and the right climate, and supportive spouse) to do this myself... guess I will have to be content with living vicariously. I have done some experiments with adding charred oak spirals to 1792 Full Proof and Benchmark Full Proof bottles, and I poured about 1/5 of the bottle out first into separate containers so I would have control samples to compare. I definitely noticed a difference, but it wasn't crazy dramatic; it took some of the rough edges off the higher proof and made it a bit darker in flavor and color. It had a more dramatic effect on the Benchmark FP that I made it a special "Stagg Jr. Jr." label!

You can buy small barrels in different char levels, google it. I have a few and like to play around with them. In the summer I would put them out side in the sun for a few days(no rain) every so often. I have a tiny bit left of some of the best whiskey I've ever had by blending Larceny, Makers Cask Strength and Bernheim, then aging it in one of the barrels.

A second control sample should have been taken right after the bourbon was put into and swished around the first day! - the final product may be more of a conglomerate-mix of bourbon and charcoal particles than “barrel” aging. Was it enough time for the blend to go into and out of the wood, which is “barrel” aging we commonly refer to, or was it just mixing charcoal from a whiskey barrel and a blend of bourbons??? Just not sure. But GREAT fun!! Thanks!!!

This is why I always wished someone would sell small, 1 or 2 gallon mini, charred barrels, so people can age their own whisky. Not to make their own whisky, but just to pour and blend store-bought whisky into their own creations. Oops - I should have waited until the end of the video to comment. I should have known someone already thought of this stuff.

@@ItsBourbonNight would love to see y'all continue this content! Maybe consider answering the question, what's the best way to age a whiskey? Love the thought of getting a single barrel and secondary aging it in all the different size barrels and with different types of wood staves.

i think you would have been better off using a smaller barrel considering you were only using 5 gallons of whiskey, way too much oxidation occurring with all that head space.

If the angels don't become pigs, 6 months from now and it might be really outstanding. Buy a Bad Motivator Barrel. Stainless with a toasted and charred butt. Very little angels share loss with those. Keep adding to this big guy would be the way to go. (unless it evaporates faster than you put it in)
