The Nikon FE2 is an advanced semi-professional level, interchangeable-lens, 35 mm film, single lens reflex (SLR) camera. It was manufactured by Nippon Kogaku K. K. (Nikon Corporation since 1988) in Japan from 1983 to 1987 (available new from dealer stock until circa 1989). The FE2 used a Nikon-designed vertical-travel focal-plane shutter with a speed range of 8 to 1/4000th second, plus Bulb and flash X-sync of 1/250th second. It has dimensions of 90 millimetres (3.5 in) height, 142.5 mm (5.61 in) width, 57.5 mm (2.26 in) depth and 550 grams (19 oz) weight, and was available in two colors: black with chrome trim and all black. The introductory US list price for the chrome body only (no lens) was $446. Note that SLRs usually sold for 30 to 40 percent below list price.
The FE2 is a member of the classic Nikon compact F-series 35 mm SLRs and was built upon a compact but rugged copper-aluminum alloy chassis similar (but not identical) to the ones used by the earlier Nikon FM (introduced in 1977), FE (1978), and FM2 (1982) cameras. The FM2/FE2 twins were improved successors to the successful Nikon FM/FE cameras with enhanced features, but minor external controls and cosmetic differences. The Nikon FA of 1983 also used this basic body design and the limited-production Nikon FM3A of 2001 continued to use it until 2006.

I had one for a long time, along with an MD-12. it was a pleasure to use, it was small and light. ALL of my lenses, from 8mm fisheye to 1000mm reflex are old manual focus Nikkors. Not an AF lens in the bunch, and they work as well on my D850 as they do on my first Nikon, my FTN, which I have had since 1973. They are both mechanically and optically superb. 25 years from now, if I am still around by then, as I will be 86, all those fancy AF lenses of today will be either in a closet or in the landfill because they no longer work but my AIS Nikkors will still be going strong.

Nikon called the prongs a meter coupling shoe; most people call it 'Rabbit ears. The cameras which used this system were: The Nikon F when fitted with type 1,2 or 3 clip-on meters or Photomic, Photomic T, Photomic Tn or Photomic FTn finders The Nikon F2 when fitted with DP-1,2 or 3 finders. The DP 11 and 12 finders for this camera used the new ai system as on your FE2 The mechanical Nikkormats FT, FTn and FT2 and the electronic Nikkormats EL and ELW. The Nikkormat FS had no meter and therefore no coupling. The Nikkormat FT3 and Nikon EL2 used the enew ai system but were only made for a short period before being replaced by the FM and FE

Pulling out the film advance lever from its closed position unlocks the shutter release as noted. It also turns on the camera electronics (meter and shutter). At its full rest position, it shuts off the power to avoid battery drain. Over the years back then, I owned the first, and second FM models, then the FE2, which I still have with its MD-12 power drive. I confess that for current use, I prefer the F100 so much that I have a 2nd mint condition F100 stored away in case my user dies before I do. There is much debate on YT over whether the FM or Fe series is superior. I prefer the FE2 for is needle and sale meter readout in the finder, as opposed to the "over/under" diode system used in the FM.

All taken together it's even three functions as the self-timer also prefires the mirror thereby eliminating any mirror-shake when doing long exposures from a tripod. Always came in handy for my microphotography. Just cock the self-timer (cocking half way saves you time) and then press the shutter.

Look at the Nikon F2 with photomic metered prism, the prongs on the lens couple the meter to the lens aperture ring. This tells the meter what your going to stop down to when the shot is taken. Pentax 645's use a similar method.

All of these old Nikon Fx series cameras are great for getting into film...or back into film as the case may be. All are wonderful..FM, FM2, FE, FE2, FA and of course the F3. The FM3a was also wonderful, a piece of jewelry. FE2 is my favorite due to the 1/4000 sec shutter speed and the low speeds on the dial down to 8 secs, the flash sync, and of course the aperture priority saves some time. They are all bulletproof. F3 has the advantage of 100% viewfinder coverage, the only drawback of the other Nikons was the 93% coverage. The flange on your lenses was for backwards compatibility for meter coupling on the old F and F2. Values of good condition samples seem to have gone up as of late.

Compared the FM2, FE2, and F3 today. Going into it, I totally thought I’d be getting an FM2 or an F3 but after getting them all in hand and spending some time with them, I left with an FE2. I just preferred the meter being a needle and not blinky lights/arrows. Even though it needs batteries to work, it just felt more analog and fun to shoot with to me. The F3 was nice and the grip felt better, but again, I liked the meter in the FE3 so much and we just connected. I also picked up a 35mm f1.4 to start our journey together off right.

Ya, by far the best of the three cameras (IMO). Aperture priority and exposure comp. 1/4000th shutter. Better metering system (as you pointed out). On/off switch is the film advance. (all of these features are in the other cameras besides the metering... but not in BOTH the F3 and FM2). The only camera that would best the FE2 would be the FM3a... it's basically the exact same as the FE2 but doesn't need batteries to function at ALL shutter speeds including 1/4000th of a second. Which is pretty remarkable.

If you don’t like the bunny ears, you can unscrew the two screws holding them in. No need to file them down. Otherwise, the short nose 50mm 1.8 Ai-s or Series E does not have the coupling prong. Btw, the later FM2n changed the shutter blades to aluminum, so Nikon didn’t need the blades to be titanium to achieve 1/4000th shutter speed. Also, the camera will do mirror lockup when the self timer is engaged, but it’s definitely a smooth operating camera.

The FA is what the FE2 was intended to be, but working out all the engineering and computerization took an extra year. So I think the FA was Nikon's best manual focus SLR. By best I mean most sophisticated and versatile. There are good cases made to state that the F3 and the FM2 are best, but for me... ....with no major effort, a G lens can be used on the FA in S and P modes - fantastic! The pokey metal things are aperture ring indexing prongs for pre-AI bodies. You'll see these, without the two small holes, on all lenses Nikon made before '77 or so (pre-AI). Pro rolls of film usually have an extra frame at the end of the roll (called E), and by using sunny 16 at 1/250, an extra 2 frames can be properly exposed before the frame counter reaches 1. 39 frames in total.

That’s sort of true for the non AI cameras they were made to work with. For older non AI cameras, you need to set the lens to 5.6 to line up the coupling linkage, when you mount the lens and couple the meter. The prongs (bunny ears) are meaningless for other cameras though.

How can someone talk about Nikon cameras and not know what the rabbit ears are for? Early Nikon cameras, like the F and F2 had a prong that fits in the groove to communicate aperture with the camera. It is one of the great things about Nikon is they kept the rabbit ears long after they are needed for 99% of cameras, just to make certain that users of older cameras can use the lens.

This is a long story so I will shorten it, even so its long. I started following Nikon in 1973 and became a customer in 1990. Four years ago I started getting interested in photography again as life was changing, I hadnt taken film since I bought the Mju in 2004 so I bought a used D80. It was fun and I caught the bug again, well truth tell I never lost it but life was hard in those last years as i started early retirement. So bought some kit zooms and thought OK lets go for it, everybody raves about the D7100. Within a week of buying it the nightmare started, the image quality was awful with the new 35mm f1.8G lens I bought. I threw it under my bed and got out the D80 again. Then thought this is stupid I need to sort this so dragged the D7100 out again. there followed 2 years of pain, you cant make a silk purse out of a D7100. WB was useless so i set it manually. I turned off all internal processing and set manually where i could. Got some useable images but they were oversharp, full of abberations (lens fault there), overprocessed and lifeless. I sold it and bought a D700, it was OK but huge and not good to use. Was there something wrong with the D7100? No, I see the same image quality in all their current models and I absolutely hate it. I had already started using a Leica as a street camera so replaced all the digital Nikon bodies and G glass with a Panasonic GX7; now replaced last week by a GX9. I use my Nikkor primes on a Leica T which gives me the lovely Leica monochrome as well as on my FM2n. So, for Nikon film cameras I am a fangirl; digital Nikon with their bloated over rated plastic prosumer lifeless equipment I dont want to see again in my camera drawer. Perhaps I am over fussy? I cant help that, I am an experimental physicist with expertise in image processing and designing imaging systems, I cant help setting the bar high. I am happy with Leica and Panasonic. Nikon is arrogant, lies, treats their dealers and customers like crap and I couldnt care if they do go bankrupt next year, they deserve it for taking their customers for granted. Even my old Panasonic GX7 with an Olympus 17mm f1.8 prime blew away the Nikon D7100. I dont miss Nikon at all and in truth I actually went mirrorless in 2004 it seems with hindsight ;-)

Was the FE2 Nikon’s best film camera ever. No. It wasn’t. It was the FM3a. By a mile. I used all of these before I went digital plus the F4 and F5 and the FM3a nailed all of them for size sweetness handling and features. I had loads of ai and ai-s lenses and the FM3a with 35mm f2 was the camera I used every day. The 50mm f1.2 ai-s was also great but too big. The 50 1.8 was also brilliant. The funny sticky out metal things were for the earlier Nikon F bodies and their ilk to tell the camera what aperture you has set. They had a sort of sticking out prong that engaged with the “sticky out metal thing”. Nikon always had and still has a thing about backwards compatibility. Nikon manual focus lenses still blow to bits most other manufacturers lenses. I bought a D700 which can still use all these brilliant lenses. Newer Nikon’s like the D3200 etc cant use these lenses. An FM3a with the MD12 motordrive could do a 36 exposure roll in about 10 seconds. If you want to try film then the FM3a is the way to go but they cost now at least what they cost new if not more.

Hi Andrew, these are AI lenses. The coupling ridge that engages with the AI pin sits behind this metal tab and functions correctly. Maybe it is for an earlier version of coupling as it moves with the aperture ring and has a slot in the middle that looks like something should fit in and get pulled around with it. Very intriguing. Will look it up!

Yeah that's true, but it's the weird prong thing on the side of the lens, not the part at the back that does exposure coupling. One of the other commenters explained it. Apparently it's an earlier form of exposure coupling that had a pin on the front of the camera, not behind the lens like we see on modern Nikon pro bodies, and that started not that long before the FE2 came out :)

eladbari got a virtually unused one locally last year for about £25. Have an f2 and f3 but for that price with a solid f2 50mm lens I had to grab it. What a bargain

Nikon sure knew what they were doing back in the 1980's, they had what seemed like 8 or 10 35mm SLR bodies (F3, F4, FG, FA, FE, FE2, FM, FM2, EM, to name a few), yet none of them had everything you'd want. Yeah, I "get it", marketers always want you chasing their next product, HOWEVER, when you have 10 competing products and you refuse to include all the bells & whistles into one of them, that is irritating. For example, of the 35mm Nikon film bodies that I've shot, the F3HP is my favorite, HOWEVER, that tiny, dimly lit metering display is an abomination of poor product design...……………….but they sold them by the boatloads for 20 years. Typically, I like heavy camera bodies, however, surprisingly the FE2 would be my second choice (of 1980's era film bodies), but I can't believe Nikon didn't include a light in the viewfinder for seeing the meter in very low light. I have not used the FM3a, however I don't think you can illuminate that viewfinder either. That typed, my all-time favorite Nikon (regardless of era) is the Nikon N90s/F90x. It beeps and buzzes like a VCR, but that meter is more accurate than an old Rolex.

Good investment that £150 for all 3. Now in 2024 they are worth 10 times that.

Analog photography is for artists, digital for the masses. Still got my trusty Nikon Fe2. It talks to me...everytime I press the shutter I get the results I want......Just a fenomenal piece of Gear. Bought mine more than 30 years ago!!! And digital camera's!!!!??????

You need to buy a F2 just so you can use those prongs, and use the greatest 35mm slr ever made. My F2 is still going strong, taking awesome pic's, and it is built like a tank. It will last forever, and survive the zombie apocalypse!!!

The FE is better than the FE2, because of the meter staying on until you shut it off (NOT 16 sec tap of shutter), battery check light, and in auto it can go up to 1/4000 shutter speed too, better exposure's as well, only con on FE is 125 sync flash and 2 contact older flash, But honestly, this is the camera you choose to shoot outdoors, not what you pick for indoor shooting, get a digital for indoors, NOT Film, only thing digital does better than film is low light shooting!!! Outdoors I use film, much higher resolution I am 20 years older than you so I've been shooting film for 42 years, since I was 17.

Get the ai-s 28mm 2.8 for your fe2 or FE, best designed sharpest lens nikon ever made with no distortion you will love it! The FE is also better because of advantages with auto long exposure's. Camera does them perfect, has mirror lock up, times them just right. Best night shooter, great for long exposures of anything that doesn't move. Another advantage of the FE is it can take, and is compatible with more nikon lenses than the FE, and has a flip up tab for older lenses you can buy for cheaper.

So much wrong information and you should really know what the rabbit ears a for before you attempt to give a tutorial this review is totally useless I'm surprised that you didn't inform the people that the camera before you was black you didn't seem to know much more about it exasperation 😢

The rabbit ears are held in by two screws... please don't file them off, I would assume you can unscrew them and then just put the screws back in. Never tried it myself. But ya, I hate them too. They make the lens reverse compatible with older Nikons

3:37 these lenses aren't "tiny" by any measure. They're very "normal" sized. Olympus lenses are "tiny". I recently switched from Olympus OM system to this Nikon and the only thing that bothers me is the lenses and the camera body are much bigger. Ya, not significant enough where I'll notice it in an overnight bag... but I wouldn't call Nikkor lenses tiny. They are very regular sized to maybe slightly above average sized.
