Ah, the myth that launched a thousand ships. The apple thrown into the middle of a greek banquet would ruin lives and lay waste to entire kingdoms. We set the stage for Helen and Paris, two lovers who were not meant to be, and why so many kingdoms would unite to keep the two of them apart. Agamemnon, Achilles, Paris, Odysseus, and fair Helen are all here, and a war is about to begin.

One thing that's been left out: The gods were worried that Eris was going to cause trouble (goddess of chaos and strife, you know...), so she wasn't invited to the wedding. _That's_ why she brought the apple, to teach them a lesson about why it's a _really_ bad idea to offend a goddess with her particular portfolio.

True. They also skipped the part where Aprodite gave Paris a cap/hat of Invisibility, so he could slip undetected into the place. I also like to think that Eris' move inspired the tale of Sleeping Beauty :D "Yeah, let's not invite the evil sorceress to our princesse's birthday party. What could possibly go wrong..?"

Evidence? The Norse gods were fairly similar to this. The Japanese kami were like this. The canaanite gods probably took child sacrifices to their deities. The Mesopotamian gods were whores (Ishtar) and matricides (Marduk). Even the devas of my own religion, as depicted in the Puranas were similar to the Greek gods (as they well should considering all of us Indo-Europeans have a common origin, wherever it may be). I don’t know enough about China to say anything about them, but I do know that Sun Wukong was a total troublemaker. This kind of god is pretty common in the preabrahamic non-Hindu world.

When I learned this story for the first time, it was told to me by a professor whom served as a nun growing up, a woman that knew 11 languages and spoke with the most marvelous Irish accent I've ever heard. She loved this story, because to her it was myth for adults. The childhood adventures of the Odyssey paled in comparison to the depth of the Iliad. Personally, my favorite "myth" is still the play Ajax and the surrounding story, but the love I have of Ajax came from the exuberance that that brilliant woman had when she first shared the tale. It has stuck with me for over a decade now, carrying my love of the genre. Sorry, I had to share.

Actually it is the Iliad that is a bit ''childish'' since it was written by Homer at a younger age and is full with gory scenes and bloodbaths, while the Odyssey came at a latter part of Homer's life, when he wad wiser and wrote more about the journey of Odysseus and the longing for his home and didn't stay to much to combat and military conflicts. That's at least what we have been learning in school.

Even with the moniker God of War, Ares was less venerated than Athena among martial Greeks; With Ares representing savagery, gleeful slaughter or chaotic actions Athena encompassing discipline, comradely or ordered actions, the success of city states in war relied on the formations cohesion, favouring order Asides Aphrodites origin is thought to have come with the Spartans as an iteration of Ishtar(who was much more war like) and when they settled in Arcadia the widespread adoption of Aphrodite seen her loose her more warlike aspects to fit into a pantheon that already had many gods covering war, the Spartans being the forbears of the cult kept her more warlike nature

Apollo and Artemis do take on a Solar & Lunar aspect at some point, but I think that was added after the classical period
@husainabedi
@husainabedi 4 жыл бұрын
From what I understand, Apollo was the initial charioteer of the 'sun-chariot' following the defeat of the Titans. However, he shunned the responsibility after his son Phaeton was tragically killed in a freak accident. Helios, his apprentice, took up the mantle and became the God of the Sun. As the other comment noted though, these stories were often "adjusted" by authors across different time period and the version I detailed above comes from Ovid in his Metamorphoses and Stephen Fry in Mythos.

Fun face: that wine Red Sea comment in the beginning is taken as evidence that ancient Greeks couldn’t see blue as a separate Color. This idea is reinforced by the face that the Color blue isn’t mentioned once in the Iliad. There’s also quite some interesting research behind how culture shapes our Color perception.
@adamwu4565

It's not that they couldn't "see" blue, but that, not having a word in their language for blue, they did not distinguish blue from a shade of green.
@KasumiRINA
@KasumiRINA 4 жыл бұрын
Chinese language didn't have a separate character for blue and green either. But if you think that's strange, English-speaking people ALSO group two separate colours with the word "blue", while most mainland European languages and Hebrew have separate words for both different colours blue and... sky blue. Like, the rainbow got 7 colors, not 6.

I was fangirling so hard at the beginning of this, but I kind of realized that there's a bunch of things missing. Like, they didn't even mention Hector, for one, or the fact that it was him leading the army, not Paris. Also, I feel like there a number of things, that were missing their context, like Paris's backstory, Eris's reasoning for bringing the apple. Also, also, Helen chose Menelaus; it wasn't random. Like, after Odysseus gave his idea, and all the suitors took the vow, Helen was given the choice, and that's who she chose. Love that you're doing this series though. You're one of my favorite channels on KZfaq, and I can't wat to see what happens nexttt.
