The Illegal Trash Volcano Burning in Kalymnos

For decades there's been an active volcano on the Greek island of Kalymnos. It isn't a geological phenomenon or a natural formation, though-it's an illegal dump on the picturesque island where garbage is burned nearly every day.
The problem isn't unique to Kalymnos. According to the latest data from the Ministry of the Environment, Greece has 39 active illegal landfills, 21 of which are on the Greek islands.
The country has been fined millions of euros by the European Union, but the problem persists. When garbage and plastics are burned like they are in Kalymnos, they release toxic substances into the air, wreaking havoc on the environment and public health.
VICE Greece recently headed over to Kalymnos to check out the trash volcano and try to figure out why illegal dumps like this one are burning across the country to this day.

My family is from Kalymnos. Every year since the 70's we have come for vacation to the Island. Some things have changed and others have not changed. The "volcano" is one of the things that hasn't changed, decade after decade. I am 41 years today and my earliest childhood memories include those of the burning trash, the "volcano", on the road to the Vathy valley.

Do a Documentary on how we here in Sweden handle garbage, we also burn trash but in a controlled way and for heating and energy, we even import from Norway. It is not a solution without some problems with it but this is just ridiculous. But its good to see that the younger generation learns the importance of recycling. Less then 1-2% ends up in landfills here now i believe.

+Magnus Bekkengen Your story goes: Functioning government handles its most basic task at above Average efficiency. Worth noting, but not exactly astounding. Theirs reads: Government teetering so close to collapse it can't facilitate even a basic form of sanitation. You can clearly see the implications behind their trash are probably a little more far reaching.
@TheThOdOr1s
@TheThOdOr1s 8 жыл бұрын
+Magnus Bekkengen What you do in Sweden is cool and all, and pretty much something similar happens on the Greek mainland (although in a much lower scale). However, Greece and Sweden don't face the same problems economically or frankly geographically. Managing a garbage system across 300 islands scattered across 7 archipelagos would be challenge enough. Being bankrupt while you're doing it, makes it pretty much imposible. So even though I think it is abominable in every way, unfortunately, as a Greek citizen and taxpayer, I can't see how it could be fixed by the cental goverment in the short term... Maybe the regional goverment will take action though.
@Huli-Man
@Huli-Man 8 жыл бұрын
Yes I know it is under different circumstances. But Sweden had to once take that first step towards what we got now. And some good news and examples of functioning system is just as important then the bad news. Greece is far from the only country with similar problems. And as you se in the video the kids garbage went to a functional port. And ideas and technology trickles down for the growing generation.

I was in Crete this summer. Near Chania we were in the nature, like for a walk and all of the sudden: Landfill of trash. It's not just on the land either. After you get out of the sea in some places, you'll find small pieces of plastic stuck to your body. It's really gross. This is mainly near cities.

This is one example of how ridiculous government bodies can act and why so much money is wasted. Greece is a country with high unemployment and struggling economically which is used as an excuse these problems when in fact it is a perfect environment to act. The mayor here is talking about how recycling is difficult because of bureaucracy and building a legal landfill can cost hundreds of thousands of euros. The mayors job is to work WITH the community to overcome these problems not to decide he needs a huge facility and cash to build it and complain that its impossible. The solution is start small and employ people at a low wage to do as much of the work as possible this will allow you to have a working recycling center and help people find employment and therefore spend their wages. With a little earthworks and some bins or trucks that can move material onto boats the community could sell bulk materials and recoup some of the costs. I'm not blaming the mayor but the system we find ourselves in when life gets hard and we tend to blame it on something/someone else, I live in Australia and we have it good in comparison to Greece economically but the same attitudes exist. We build nice big recycling facilities surround it with bureaucracy, charge everyone to use it and then continue to increase rates and taxes because our government spends so much.

Everyone is concerned about the smoke. Little do they know that that is the temporary problem. Metals such as lead, arsenic and the rest of the CAM-17 are not carried away by burning them. They stay behind and become concentrated to levels that are extremely harmful. On an island surrounded by salt water you are not concerned with your groundwater supplies but what about the fish that is locally caught? What about the dust that is picked up by the wind. Dioxins are bad but even after the site gets shut down you still have the metals. And the cleanup is always more expensive than proper waste disposal.

These islands were designed 500 years ago when there was no "trash". Why doesn't the tourism industry raise prices enough to pay into a fund for recycling/relocating the trash.

"There are 39 active illegal landfills across Greece, 21 of which are on the Greek islands." Have you the list of these 39 illegal landfills, please ?

The government should have invested an efficient/ effective infrastructure to get rid of this garbage long before. Not to mention Greece's financial crisis, its even more difficult for changes on these beautiful islands. Hope they use the amount of money paid for fines for something more useful.

But, couldn't we just throw it in a volcano? Is that viable- or would that cause it to erupt?

It's crazy to think that all these islands together can't afford $800,000 even with the help of a central government to build a transfer station. That's rapper money these days lol like seriously if 1 person gifted a million USD to Kalymnos it could go so far

+DirtySouthGaming Its probably because everything requires more money and the landfills are at the bottom of the list.

Who are the "Roma" the deputy mayor is referring to when asked about who starts the fires? Are those Italians or is that an ethnic slur? Honest question.

I take it these people don't recycle. Plastic and glass bottles mixed in. I guess it would be hard to collect bottles from every island. Maybe have a spot on the island to sort it and then collect it once a year. Man Greece is going down the shitter fast.

When you burn rubbish like this, you don't just produce carbon dioxide and small particle pollution(ash). Rubbish contains tons of N, P and S containing compounds that produce oxides that react with water to produce acids. So, please, build a furnace to filter the smoke. It can be done cheap too. Hell, build the furnace out of trash itself. Find someone local who can weld.
