When students learn immigration history in school, they're often introduced to Ellis Island. But they rarely learn about Angel Island, the immigration station on the west coast that was a hub for people arriving from Asia.

This educator right here teaches his 6th graders about Angel Island for sure. I also teach students about the racism, prejudice, and bigotry Chinese immigrants faced in this country. I am glad I stumbled upon this because this builds my knowledge and appreciation for the difficulties that Asian American immigrants and their descendants had to endure.

I'm glad you touched on this part of history because I find it completely baffling on how it is taught. If I may be direct with words in order to be correct the Nword Slave Trade was actually held in Indo China "Oost-Indische Archipels". At this time they had a complete monopoly on both the labour system and agriculture. Hence the reason why Slavery literally means paid employement. Nword means people of Negerij Tabanan "Matahari". The topic of importing free whites to North Amerika was started by European Peasants who wanted to remove Nwords from the labour market. And by year 1855 North America started importing Free European instead of European Peasants. This Act became know as Immigration Act. Therefore Nwords and European Peasants "Serfs" were both cut out of the labour market and that's when Industrialization begins.

Being from SF I only had one history teacher in the whole district teach about Angel Island. She taught us so many things you wouldn’t traditionally learn about. I love that lady and she loved her job

I'm studying english at school in France, and that was a very good video. Thank you for all you just said! We have to struggle against racism which is unfortunately still in our society. When I saw "Chinese Virus", I was chocked by how horrible these words are (especially from a President). Moreover, the story of this family was really moving; it shows us to what extent Chinese Exclusion Act destroyed families, but also that we have to struggle if you want to have more rights so as to have a better life! (sorry for some likely mistakes!!)

I love history, im Mexican born in Mexico but immigrated here legally with my parents when I was one year old. They came here to the San Francisco Bay Area in union city ca to be exact. My fathers dad (my grandfather) was born here but lived his life in Mexico because of the Mexican American war. My moms father came here to work as a bracero back in the early 1900's. It's crazy, now I'm 34 and have a Vietnamese wife the Bay Area is truly a melting pot. There was definitely and still is a lot of racism. It's funny when people say go back to your county when most of the west coast was actually Mexico. All of the cities and streets are literally named in Spanish.

Me hearing a man is doing everything "right" and worrying about the fate of this South Asian American family. :( And, 100 years later, Middle Eastern naturalized citizens faced the same, even after decades of time in the community. The big ICE bust in the Detroit and Dearborn area of Michigan felt like a dystopian novel. I understand where authors come up with the plots, I guess.

Has anyone looked into the politics of the day when this discrimination was so prevalent? It’s easy to say “White Supremacy” was to blame but there was always politicians behind these policies. Politics drives policy.

Wow, how so much easier and lenient it is now to enter the USA! You can cross the Mexican boarder and the US Boarder Patrol let you in. Assylum seeking process is also helped by the social organisations. It's not a surprise the illegal entries are continuing.
