I played poker against Roman many years ago. He and Walter Browne, 6 time U.S. Chess Champion, both played poker in the Bay Area. (Walter was a friend of mine for over 20 years). By the way, in a nice coincidence, this video was posted on May 5th, Roman's 80th birthday. Happy Birthday, Roman!

Yes, many GMs aren't simply chess degenerates -- any game will do! You could even catch Dzindzi and Walter between rounds with a backgammon case setup between them . . . and just because no cash was visible above board -- don't think for a second they both weren't keenly aware of the score!

Watching your channel since a long time. I guess the most boring thing in life would be to see a YT video of a chess game. But you make it so interesting with your commentary, the historical perspective, the background of the masters of the game, as well as the chess engine alternatives. In addition, you have arranged the screen in the most optimum perfect way. This is far ahead of other contemporary chess channel. And then finally, your coverage of the Magician of Riga. Awesum.

Walter and Roman would occasionally show up at Hardcastle's Cafe in Berkeley, California to play 5-minute games during the early seventies. Sometimes, after Hardcastle's closed for the night, a few of us diehards would adjourn to Walter's apartment to play chess until the sun came up. Walter's new bride was most understanding of our bleary-eyed chess antics on those all-nighters. Roman and I always played 5-minute chess for quarters; but, as he started dominating he would spot me a couple minutes each game...LOL. He was the best at 5-minute! After I acquired a beautiful Heuer aluminum-cased analog chess clock, I loaned it to Roman so he could attend a chess tournament somewhere. Turns out that he took it back to New York and it was not returned to me until several months later. Still have that bullet-proof clock! And many thanks to the others below who commented with just enough information to jog my memory about those great old days of playing with the boys at Hardcastle's.

It's interesting to see that the idea of moving the b-pawn and playing Ba6 existed the moment Kf1 was played, and White did not prevent it from happening, but instead made moves that made the idea even stronger.

5:39 : What happens if 14. Ne6 instead of Bg5 🤔 doesn't that threaten to eliminate black's white-square bishop, and if ... Ba6, then Qxd8, and the white pawn on c4 will be protected by the knight on d6. Note, Qf6 also does not work, since 15. Nxc8 and the black queen does not reach the white squares in time to mate the white king, since the knight on c8 has checks with potential forks

If Nd6 then Qc7 seems to win threatening the knight and Ba6 winning the queen. Also the queen might just be trapped as well.

Looks to me like white could (must, really) play Qxc8. Then, after 15. ..., Qxc8, 16.N(b)d2 (or N(e)d6, or b3-to protect c4), Qa6+, 17. c4, ...-white has stopped the mate, and has a rook and knight for black’s queen and three pawns. Black is still better, but it looks like there’s still a game here.
