---------------------------------------------------
Developer: Sandcastle
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Year of Release: 1991
Game Review & Impressions
---------------------------------------------------
Released in 1990 for the Apple IIgs and Amiga home computers, The Immortal is an isometric dungeon crawler designed by Will Harvey, Ian Gooding, Brett Durrett and Michael Marcantel. I wasn't familiar with the game until I saw James Rolfe cover the game for an episode of AVGN, and I'd been curious to try it out ever since.
You assume the role of a student of magic in search of his mentor, Mordamir, who has gone missing somewhere in the depths of deep, dank dungeon. Descending below the surface, you will encounter all manner of foul beasts and creatures, not to mention warring tribes of trolls and goblins, corrosive puddles of slime, and maybe even a dragon or two.
At its core, the game is a kind of proto-action RPG, interspersed with puzzles to solve on each of the dungeon's levels. Enemies must be fought, items collected and traps avoided, none of which are easy to do. In fact, the difficulty curve and seemingly random deaths are one of the main complaints raised about the game. To put it bluntly, the game is tough, and gamers would probably rather stick pins in their eyes than try and navigate rooms full of invisible pit traps and giant worm monsters.
However, having persevered through the entire game, I found there's actually a lot of cool ideas underneath the rock-hard exterior. The game, location and narrative feel oddly reminiscent of a text adventure, or a "Fighting Fantasy" novel, as popularised by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingston. The claustrophobic setting of the dungeon, complete with its factions of trolls and goblins, feels oddly atmospheric. Despite the fact each floor is only made up of 5 or 6 different rooms, the various interactions, puzzles and combat encounters make the place feel much bigger than it really is.
So, The Immortal is tough, incredibly so at times, but I think it's worth sticking with it because the fantasy vibe is actually pretty cool, not to mention the particularly gory death animations when you win in combat. It might not be for everyone, but there's a fairly immersive fantasy adventure here if you're up for a challenge.
Video Notes
---------------------------------------------------
I added some of the player death animations at the end of the video.

Appreciated the death outtakes at the end. Always love watching a playthrough of this, especially the Genesis/Mega Drive version. Music, mood, and I love the concise story. I don't think lacking the deaths would have made it better, you needed consequences like that hanging over your head at every turn, I think. Still love this game all these decades later

The spider corridor, damn that was hard, as if going down an isometric hallway wasn't hard enough, you have to dodge egg sacks left and right, all on a time limit before the levitation spell wears off and you meet a gruesome death. If you go too fast, you risk bumping into the walls and start pinballing uncontrollably To this day, I still can't tell for sure when you fall into one of the holes your staff keeps you from falling briefly, while pressing A or B your character makes the attempt to swing up, but could never do it before the staff snaps and send you flying into your doom. My gut tells me it's not recoverable, and it's just a cleverly animated death animation

@jackylee5850
@jackylee5850 2 жыл бұрын
Amazing, it looks like you tapped the button in rhythm and was able to escape in just 4 swings. I thought it required a certain amount of swings in the short time you're given, clearly rapidly mashing the buttons wasn't going to cut it. Of course, the map you get marked clearly where the holes are, so it's almost impossible to fall in anyway. I'll have to give it a try later, if only for completion sake Still, I'm surprised it's actually possible, one would think your character being this old wizard is quite frail and wouldn't really have the dexterity to swing up like that. Also, my gut feeling tells me that it's not just a one time deal either, though there's no reason to intentionally fall in

What the heck sort of wizard has to rely on scrolls to cast spells? Mordamir can seemingly cast spells by his will alone. The player character here seems like he can only use magic freely by hitting someone with a staff, and he has to rely on a knife (or short sword?) as a backup weapon.
