Has someone died during the filming? The play with David Suchet is so much more charming and better in every way!

I think the idea is to emulate the stuffy manner of the Victorians, highlighting the ridiculousness of the lines by lampooning the seriousness of the times in which the play takes place. Suchet goes the opposite route and amps everything up.

@@Afalstein And besides that it is a movie, set without the participation of an audience, there is no laughter. It's hard to do well a comedy for the stage without the audience. I was pleased with the performances but the whole thing somehow is weaker than anticipated. Judi Dench is of course a perfect Aunt Augusta. What a pleasure it would be to see her in the role on stage!

@@Afalstein maybe that was the original idea, but it did fail miserably. They completely killed the humour of the play.
