This is especially important for new tattoo artists. And those moving too fast and skipping necessary steps in building a strong foundation. It's never too late to go back and work on the basics.
Think about it like this; A fighter with a strong foundation can win with a few simple moves against one with a lot of moves but weak fundamentals.

Drawing the main part. But with the tattoo you have a stencil comparing drawing on the paper 🤔
@jjjaylud
@jjjaylud 2 жыл бұрын
oh yes I use stencil now. I've gotten lazy haha. but first 3 years it was all hand stenciling. I recommend this for beginner tattooers. More experienced ones should still hand stencil(because there is never enough training) but I understand realistically its a time saver and who wants to hand stencil all the time?

Hii. I am desperate to learn but how do i literally start? Would u say books like «drawing on the right side of the brain» are good?
@jjjaylud
@jjjaylud Жыл бұрын
(I googled it.) So right side meaning creative? I think each of us are born with different brain types(left/right). So yeah to get an idea of what it is you can read about it but... I don't think that is enough? Unless they teach you or something I'm not aware of. I bought a few Superanius artist's books but been too lazy to start reading those. I learned to draw koi from a book. They're useful so yeah read a book. So if that is not enough then I believe you must also try new things, experience positive and negative emotions in the farther ends of the spectrum, not near the middle. And different environment and stimuli. Sometimes things that will scare you even. That is all chaos/creativity. Be careful. Maybe I'm wrong but I think so. I don't know if I'm left or right brained by birth but I have experienced a lot of crazy things. I tend to be much more creative when I'm nervous, sad, lonely or angry. All negative emotions. Maybe we all are? 🤔 And more creative when I doze off, In the zone, exercising, showering and when I'm about to sleep. I don't recommend but I'm sure d**gs alter your senses and brain so maybe adds creativity? Be very careful. I think you can train it.

If we wanted to practice our drawing what type of pencil (s) would you recommend?
@jjjaylud
@jjjaylud 2 жыл бұрын
For General drawing anything is fine but for tattooing, specifically fineline, 0.5 and 0.3 mechanical pencils are great. If you can shade very smoothly with those then you’ll notice the skill translate well into smooth shading with fineline needles like 1RL or 3rl. The reason is both needle and pencil involves pressure/depth control for smooth shading and both are similarly thin for linework. I also sharpen normal pencils like 4B pencils so it has a fine tip. But you have to sharpen them often. Micron pens like the 005 and 1 have fine tips too to train linework with. But no good for shading because they only produce one tone(black) while the pencil produces many grey tones based on how often you layer it or how much pressure you apply(just like shading with the 1RL)

The pencils brand is not important, cheap or expensive, you can draw also a crazy stuff with cheap pencils.

What about Bic pens to draw with? Are these good to learn how to shade with 1 or 3 RL?
@jjjaylud
@jjjaylud 2 жыл бұрын
1) Short answer, yes. people have made some beautiful hyperrealistic drawings with those pens. 2) Long VERY PICKY answer: Id say that pen is closer to 3RL than to 1RL. the tip of that pen is built differently. sometimes its hard to tell where the ink is flowing out when you are marking the paper. I'm being very very particular but when you draw or tattoo for so long, and chasing accuracy more, these little differences start to matter more and more. I love the .03 lead pencil because you can feel exactly where the tip meets the paper when you angle it correctly(since even .03 lead can blunt out a little so you angle it to a sharper corner). it feels very much like how you can see and feel where the 1RL needle hits the skin to make the mark. I'm 8 years in tattooing and several years into drawing so maybe these tiny preferences matters to me a lot more than to others. but I hope this gives you some perspective anyways.

is practicing on fake skin considered drawing
@jjjaylud
@jjjaylud 2 ай бұрын
Kind of. But drawing is much easier to set up and you can do it anywhere and everywhere. it's like exercising in your back yard instead of getting ready for the gym to exercise. Maybe that is a good analogy.
@jjjaylud
@jjjaylud 2 ай бұрын
Both are good though as long as you don't mind setting up to tattoo the fake skin every time. As long as you are exercising.
