Our modern lifestyle - characterized by low light exposure during the day and high light exposure during the evening and nighttime hours - has dramatic effects on circadian rhythms and, ultimately, our ability to fall asleep and stay asleep. The key to restoring those rhythms to their natural, healthy patterns may be as simple as making small changes that alter the amount and timing of our exposure to light. In particular, exposure to 30 to 40 minutes of bright light, early in the day, and exposure to lower light during the afternoon and evening hours can reset our internal clocks and improve our sleep. In this clip, Dr. Matthew Walker explains how altering the timing and duration of daytime light exposure influences sleep.

The sun where I live currently sets at around 9pm, and rises at about 5.30am..... not all of humanity is designed to live in the tropics... Also this would suggest that anybody living away from the equator should be constantly moving their sleep and wake times throughout the year. I wish the research addressed this.

So, we aren't supposed to rise right before sun but much earlier? (Referring to midnight or 1am being middle of sleep)

Sooo...what about an excessive amount of light from the sun that could cause Skin Cancer?

You can still use sunscreen, that won't change your circadian rhythm

What data have you read that leads you to believe that the sunlight causes skin cancer? It doesn’t. Cancer is partially caused by various things like seed oils, lack of vitamin d, lack of exercise. Getting sun in your eyes and getting sun on your skin are different things. You can increase your tolerance for sun on your skin by eating better fats. Bright light in your eyes during the day has no healthy limit.

Matt Walker says there are chronotypes that define when your circadian rhythm occurs but ALSO says early day sunlight is important? What a glaring contradiction.
