Now you’re inspiring me to try this. I’ve never been comfortable having my picture taken, so it’s probably a good thing to try doing it myself. 👍

Go for it Robert, as I said in the video, you don't need to share it with anyone if you don't want to, its a self reflection and growth exercise and much needed for our own wellbeing if I may be honest, thank you for watching 🤍

Hey Charlotte, first of all thank you for sharing that in here and let me tell you that I too understand what its like to feel like that but as I showed through my example and this video we can get rid of that feeling or making it more manageable overtime as long as we focus on finding our peace and balance. Wherever you are know that I wish you absolutely all the best and I'm telling you to not be afraid of confronting yourself, sometimes its the best remedy to end our fears. Much love!

I take Self-Portraits from time to time and have done so since the 1960s. For many years, I would not show them to anyone because I thought of it as being too self-centered on oneself. I had never thought of this as being a way to show change and aging! And Thank You for using the term "Self-Portrait" instead of "Selfie"!

Hey William so glad to come across your comment glad to know you’ve been doing it for a long time now, and of course I would use self portrait because self portrait is not the same as selfie, at least in my opinion!

I struggle with self image and taking self portraits over the years has helped me to feel more comfortable in my body, although I still have bad days where I really hate the way I look but its becoming less of an occurrence. Self portraits have been one of most important things I photograph during my photographic journey because its really for myself. Like you I'll do self portraits when I'm happy and when I'm having a bad day or sad and being able to reflect on them and tell myself, bad days don't last forever and happy days occur more than bad days. Thanks for making this video Tatiana, you're an inspiration.

Your video is really inspiring. I started taking self portraits during the lockdown. I started it to explore some portrait and lighting technique, but then I suddenly had to confront with my self image and how being also the subject impacted the final result. I felt uneasy and wandered if that in the picture was the image I was transmitting of myself. Now I'm taking self portraits a couple of time a year and I'm starting to enjoy it and feeling more comfortable an confident in both how I stand behind and in front of the camera. The suggestion of a photo diary is intriguing, and more so the references to Maier works on how to include yourself in the picture. On a side note, I'm not currently shooting on film (I started with it, but switched to digital along the way) and every time I watch your videos it makes me want to try it again :) As always, great work!

Lately, I have been struggling with a lack of motivation and connectedness... thank you so very much for the inspiration! I believe self knowledge is extremely important. Whenever i think of self-portraits i go to Nan Goldin's work. It's such a clear display of strength by showing what are extremely private and vulnerable moments. Haven't done such an exercise in a while, will get to it. Being Portuguese can't help my curiousity about which places you visited.

Now that's something that i am still working on, taking self-portraits and sharing them on social networks, seeing people reacting encouraged me somehow to be myself and show what represents me. It's a way to project your image in other people's minds involuntary, defining your real self as long as the pictures are sincere. It helped encourage me to start this new youtube channel as well, still working on being honest and don't panic in front of the camera. Thank you for this great video :) It was pleasing to watch and thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge :) It meant a lot! Also amazing work!

Before I add a little personal story, I'd like to say that your self portraits on the Mamiya and with the hat are absolutely stunning ! There's a real atmosphere to them, a real depth, a real intimacy. I love them ! Now for the personal note : I have OCD. 25 years ago, I came home after 3 weeks and found that 6 mice had squatted my flat and crapped everywhere. In the heat of anguish that I experienced, I threw most of my stuff away : CD's, DVD's, and a whole box full of the hundreds of pictures I had taken since I was 13. I regret it deeply now, because I have no "engraven" memories of that time left. So I also take self portraits, from time to time, and I "document" my life now, because I know that in 10-20 years time, I'll be glad to look back at something. A bit like in this quote from the Kodachrome movie : "We take pictures to stop time, to commit moments to eternity". Anyway. Thanks for sharing ! Keep up the good work :)

Very cool, as always. I have been doing self-portraits for a few years now, in part for the reasons you stated, in part to explore portraiture in ways I may not get to do when photographing others, and in part because I was bored and thought, "I wanna do portraits and I am the only one available." A couple of times I tried emulating other's portraits, too. One time I was trying to get the feel for a rented speed light and got goofy with my camera. My latest attempt is going to be trying out a Cecil Beaton B&W photo of a very young Audrey Hepburn; she is dressed in black, standing in a corner, body in profile, face turned toward the camera, with her right arm behind her and her left hand in the open palm, "stop" position. The look on her face, the overall "don't think of testing my resolve to keep my privacy" feeling, are stunning. Oh, yeah, I forgot. Doing self-portraits made me more comfortable with taking portraits of others. Made me more empathetic and accepting when someone says no or does not appreciate having their photo made. Anyway, thank you.

Hello Leila, first of all thank you so much for your comment and let me say that I do understand where you’re coming from, I dealt with self image issues since my teenage years to my early twenties, it was a tumultuous period for me and those around me, and I tried so many things to get past it but most importantly I found and accepted that if I were to start a process of healing and self acceptance I would be more fulfilled over time and happier with myself and thats one of the most important things in life because in essence you need to leave at peace with yourself and then with others and if others don’t like what they see so be it but you are the most important person in the room when it comes to your self image and self worth remember that, wishing you all the absolute best 🤍✨

Personally, I hate self-portraits (of myself). Reasons aside, I found them to be necessary sometimes. After seeing how some great photographers did it, what helped me immensely was the realization that it doesn't have to be a giant picture of your face (just an example). Even if you're barely visible, it can still be a self-portrait. There are many possible ways to work with your surroundings, the environment, you can use reflections, even shadows. Be out of focus. I thought this might help you to get started, also it just shows how many ways there are to incorporate your feelings, your mood, maybe even your struggles into such a picture. Without solely focussing on an image of your actual body. :)

I like to have a person in my photos . Sometimes I'm the only person available. I like photographing people who are posing for someone else. A candid pose. Selfies are interesting. Alot of great artist painted self portraits. Sometimes it interesting to me, to put myself in a mood, then make some selfies. Like listen to some cynical music by Lou Reed, or watch a funny cartoon like The Tick. I like Andrew Wythes paintings alot. He communicates loneliness, and dispare in some. I like his ocean related paintings alot also. Thanks for the great shows that you make.

I have to admit I put it on the side for months but I knew I needed to do something like this and not be afraid to be vulnerable if that makes sense, thank you for watching vince!

Well, you're not alone in your assessment Hopper. I found myself nodding all the way through that. I wonder if the motivations are the same for everyone. Your reference to maintaining privacy even though your self portraits are on Instagram and the like, caught my attention. Having your private world reduced to the self was once the preserve of the damaged, distressed, public and celebrity. I wonder if it is now the preserve of complete generations. Now there's a project 🤔😊. Still the best tunes on KZfaq. I thoroughly enjoyed that. Thanks.

I am my favourite model 😂 it’s so true that you make the self portrait public but at the same time it’s so private that no one will ever know what’s really about.

Beautiful, before I didn't like self-portrait because I thought it was selfish, but after watch the video I think is more deep than I thought. As a photographer, I present to myself as "someone" because I feel that I have another identity...
