I think every photographer should take self-portraits every once in a while. And even though this is easily said, I have avoided taking self-portraits for ages. In this video I finally face my fear of photographing myself in a healing, almost cathartic process that definitely changed me. Watch the video to find out how.

This level of vulnerability in photography is a big struggle for me as well. I haven't done any self portraits in about 18 months (outside of a quick snap into a mirror where my face is covered), and this has inspired me to try it again. Thanks for sharing this difficult thing you did!

Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it a lot! 18 months is nothing, my last self-portraits before this session is yeeeears ago, I was probably still a teen 😂 I am really glad I inspired you to try it again, even though I know it's not always easy or comfortable I am certain that it's worth it!

Very strong exploration of the self portrait. Letting us reside inside your thoughts and process was wonderful and educational. There is a reason why self portraits were pursued by all the great artists throughout history. You continue to create the kind of content that rewards everyone who is lucky enough to encounter your channel. Brava!

self portraits are so hard, i hate taking them... but also love it as well. Im approaching 40 and seeing what that does to your skin, body, etc, and makes it that much harder when you pick yourself apart. The last one of the year i took was just smushing my face against my scanner and letting it scan.

The first sentence is me in a nutshell, I feel it so much haha. I love scanner photography! The last self-portraits I took of myself some years back were actually scans as well, it's such a creative method.

I've come to learn that everybody has something they don't like about their bodies. And those who say otherwise have had plastic surgery. It takes a lot of courage to point those things out publicly. There are a lot of people who have more acne scars than they like. But guess what, we like you despite of your scars, wide open pores and oily skin. What really counts is what's in the heart. 🥰

I agree, I don't know any person who does not have a single thing they struggle with in their appearance. Even though this are usually things I would not even pay attention to in others. But we are often our own biggest critiques. What a same what societal beauty standards can do to us.

It's the imperfections that make a person perfect. The imperfections tell stories, they are unique. That's what I'm telling myself often. And though I think it's true, I'm constantly struggling with self portraits. The only one I can accept right now is my avatar. And that's just a selfie from my phone. Thanks to you I will give it another try. And maybe I will get some decent results.

Your photos are incredible and inspiring. I find it extremely difficult for me to be to subject rather than taking the photo. Even my pfp doesn't show very much of myself at all, I only feel comfortable with my entire head covered due to my own insecurities. I relate to not leaving my place for period s of time because I do not feel comfortable in my own skin. I do want to be more open with myself and I want to express more of the deep feelings I have towards gender and my own presentation of it. I don't want to hide but my own mind gets in the way of the beauty that is there. I started the new year sick as a dog and so I had to spend days in a bathroom staring at myself and I found a kind of appreciation for my eyes and lashes actually thinking that I have pretty/beautiful eyes. Vivian Maier is someone I really look up to for self portraits because of her appearance of being unafraid to photograph herself throughout her life. Im hoping to be more expressive this year and being more honest with myself to understand and move beyond them to be more me than ever.

Thanks so much for your comment and for opening up about your own situation! I can totally relate - and by reading it from somebody else it also makes me able to see it with a bit of distance. It kind of makes me sad that societal beauty standards and gender norms have such a strong power over us, going as far as restraining us from going out and just enjoying life. Vivian Maier is an inspiration to me as well (mostly for her street photography but also for her self-portrait work) and I think there is much to learn from her. All the best to you ♥️

Thank you for this video! This must have been hard but the results are great. I do not have any body issues but the act of a 45 year old man taking self portraits feels odd and shameful somehow. It feels like a natural thing for a young women or even a man to do. It definitely feels very self conscious and stressful taking and sharing self portraits especially when sometimes i get comments like why are you looking so serious or never smiling in these photos.
@KarinMajoka
@KarinMajoka 7 ай бұрын
I think there is or at least shouldn't be an age limit to self-portraits. Documenting growth and aging is something really beautiful and does never stop. But I get that it might feel off to oneself while doing it, I felt a little odd during the shoot as well. (And I also hate when people say "you never smile in your photos" because... yeah that's the point! If I wanted to take a happy holiday picture I would, but some self-portraits are about something else where smiling is just not fitting)

Aber ganz ehrlich: Who cares?! Von daher: Go for it! 🙂

Nice self-portraits. Not liking being in front of the camera is very familiar to me. Especially with other people controlling the camera. It has been more than 25 years since the last time someone else took a photo of me, I actually liked. If I'm in front of a camera, I'm the one controlling it - at least if the result is supposed to be something I intend to use for anything (like my profile pic here on KZfaq and other SoMe).
@KarinMajoka

I guess there is a good reason why us photographers usually enjoy to be behind the camera - because it also means we don't need to be in front of the camera! I totally get that, giving away some of the control is also really hard for me. But it can also be rewarding doing it with somebody you trust.

Great insight and your reflection on the shoot itself. I have spent the last year working on a series of self portraits exploring my extreme weight loss and the ravages it can have on the body. Not to mention the "self healing" along the way. This exploration was all on film, developed and printed by myself. The process of actually doing the shoot, developing and printing and the time it took really helped me to get close to the photographs and the time really helped with the self reflection. The last portfolio was all shot on a 4x5 camera with 16x20 prints. Loved the process.

Excellent video. Gave me a lot to consider. I think this story of yours is very much a fusion of two or three of your areas of expertise, which makes it quite informative on several levels. Highly recommended! Are you going to be doing more color work now, or just for this project? (By the way, I believe the Andreas Feininger picture in your opening group of examples is a portrait of Dennis Stock, not of himself.)

Thanks so much for your comment, I appreciate it a lot! Actually it was all black an white in 2023 for me (except commercial work). I still have a video (or maybe even two) with only black and white work in the archive from last year to bring out and other than that I will re-start with shooting more colour again. Oh that a good point about the portrait in the intro, I just researched and you are correct! What a bummer I got that one wrong, I really thought it was a self-portrait. I will make a remark in the video description and hope people will see it. Thanks!

What film sims did you use? Classic Negative? Some really nice pictures. Decent human beings like it when someone shows her vulnerability.

Good question, I think it was Classic Chrome for the most part and a bit of Nostalgic Negative. Thanks for your comment! :)

You have posted around 5 or 6 negative comments under several of my videos now. I get it, my videos might not be your cup of tea, this happens. But why do you keep watching if you have already found out you don't like my photos and videos anyway? There are plenty of other channels to watch then

@@KarinMajokabecause some people are just losers and enjoy leaving negativity in other people’s feeds since it’s all they have going for in their lives. Don’t worry, it was a good video just ignore the ignorants.

rly appreciated seeing the whole process & access to interiority as well as the final results! I'm pretty dysmorphic & hate being on camera, but have wanted to experiment with self portraits for a while. Maybe this has given me the little push I needed :) also fyi I love your style of presentation & presence on camera - I'm glad the talking head segments are there in your videos!!

Thank you so much for your honesty about your situation and of course also the kind words. I appreciate it a lot! I know how uncomfortable it can feel but I can also say: go for it! You have nothing to loose except maybe gain a different perspective on yourself. :) All the best to you ♥️

I am a seasoned amateur photographer of 49 years of age; who does street-photography at surface level and on the London Underground (Subway). I am also a man who loves big teddy bears, in fact I have a big teddy bear I always take to bed with me; and so I came up with the idea of doing a self-portrait where I included my teddy bear in the photo; I shaved my head and put a baby's dummy in my mouth to make me look like a baby, I set up my camera on a tripod and positioned it to look down on me, while I sat on a chair with my teddy bear on my lap and my arm wrapped around him, while I innocently looked up at the camera lens like a child before making the exposure. This self-portrait says a lot about me, ie my love for big teddy bears, and my weird personality. It's a shame that vast majority of adults don't love teddy bears, I'm telling you from personal experience that cuddling up to a big teddy bear in bed is so mentally therapeutic, you should try it.

Thanks for sharing your experience, sounds like it must be a very interesting self-portraits! :) Somehow I have to think of Mr. Bean but I don't know if it's going to this direction at all haha. I have a small stuffed animal I have had for years now and I cannot understand how some people cannot still own at least one stuffed animal from their childhood.

@@KarinMajoka Thank you for replying, I honestly don't expect content creators to reply because I know how busy they are. Even though I am weird, I am hardly like Mr Bean, though I'm not offended. Mr Bean's soft toy is hardly a teddy bear; my one is 36" tall and paid £100 for him; he has very smooth short and straight fur like that of a Pit-Bull dog. You will have noticed that I use male pronouns to describe my teddy bear, I do this because I have a mind of a child, and also to make people laugh. Another weird aspect of my personality is that I love old Underground trains, it's because I was born with a disability, so for the first 25 years of my life I had to visit hospitals and these trips meant travelling on the Underground. Another weird aspect of my character is my sexuality, you can blame my nurses for that 😳 🤣. The circumstances of one's birth and childhood experiences shape people, as the circumstances of my birth weren't normal and neither was my childhood, which shaped me into the weird person that I am. When I get the time I will watch more of your KZfaq videos; I don't expect you to reply, that is entirely up to you, bye.
