I saw Richard Kiley perform this on Broadway and then was lucky enough to see Brian do the same. But it was not the same...Brian made the part his own...and his rendition of the Impossible Dream was truly spectacular. I had the lead in the Man Of La Mancha in College and after seeing both of them perform, it was sooo difficult to do the song justice. I am very glad I found it on You Tube. I listen to this everyday...very inspirational. I also worked at Fox when they were making TRAPPER JOHN...wish I had gone of the set to let Brian know how much he performance meant to me.

Try Richard Kiley's version. Kiley belts it, and manages to rip your heart out with the feebleness of his body, but his will shines through. This is excellent, however.

While this performance was done at the Tony Awards that year, on the Broadway cast soundtrack CD recording Brian ends this on a different high note which will give you chills. The reaching of his voice on the last few lyrics is just remarkable. If you have the chance, treat yourself to this Broadway cast recording because it's an investment for your soul! M

I absolutely play this song when times are tough. Such a powerful song, and his performance was the best I have heard of it. I'm a big fan of Brian Stokes Mitchell's work, so I might be biased. It is this role of his, however, where I first discovered him. I was lucky enough that me watching Centaurworld tagged me enough to get a Facebook ad for one of his performances I could attend.

I'm only five chapters from finishing the book. And watching this made me cry. I kind of scoffed at the book's premise everywhere but I feel it really has caused a change in me. Word to the wise, if you are a conservative realist, reading the book might cause you to suddenly wake up to find yourself agitated to fight the impossible fight against the many ills of society.

No the book doesn't think Don Quiote is a heroic character He makes everyone's life worse with his refusal to deal with reality.

@@BigPimp238 Hmm... that's a fair assessment, if you've only read a synopsis instead of the actual book. You see of the hundred of pages of text, I'd say 80-95% of the time, the author and the writing is rather sympathetic to the protagonist.

To dream, the impossible dream To fight, the unbeatable foe To bear, with unbearable sorrow To run, where the brave dare not go To right, the unrightable wrong To love, pure and chaste from afar To try, when your arms are too weary To reach the unreachable star This is my quest To follow that star No matter how hopeless No matter how far To fight for the right Without question or pause To be willing to march into hell For a heavenly cause And I know, if I’ll only be true To this glorious quest That my heart will lie peaceful and calm When I’m laid to my rest And the world will be better for this That one man, scorned and covered with scars Still strove with his last once of courage To reach the unreachable star.

Beautiful song. I love the play on words and concepts of this version in English, playing by contrasting opposing ideas. As in "be willing to march into hell for a heavenly cause". In the Spanish version we don't have that, but I like the acting, physical appearance and body language of the actor in Spanish from the 1970s better. Heroes and superheroes of all times would have much to rescue from this heroic and ideal representation of Don Quixote condensed in this song. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bZiHhceW0sWpcoU.html Bellisima canción.

It's a shame that Richard Kiley wasn't chosen for the film role (or maybe he turned it down) because a remarkable actor like Peter O'Toole just wasn't remarkable in the film. Sophia Loren did a fair job as Dulcinea, but I guess it all came down to Hollywood casting.
