I've been looking forward to this race for a very long time. It's been decades since Leeds has had a road marathon and it really is something that the city has been missing. The Run For All Team, along with the MND Association, Rob Burrow, Kevin Sinfield and many more people behind the scenes have worked incredibly hard to bring this marathon to Leeds.
Northern Pacing Volunteers were asked to provide pacers for the race and so I put my hat in the ring and agreed to pace. It was never going to be an easy marathon to pace. Most road marathons are relatively flat... Sometimes a slow or fast mile here and there, but the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon was something else entirely! Undulating right from the start with a 3 mile hill at mile 17... it was always going to be hard. But the things that are worth doing are rarely easy, so we had many discussions, route recces, and sleepless nights trying to figure out where we could bank enough seconds to be able to slow the pace enough on the hills in the hope that we could keep runners with us and help them get round.
The day was so much hotter than we thought it would be... Just a week beforehand the forecast had been for rain and thunderstorms all day! It just goes to show that you can always trust the great British weather to keep you on your toes! A misty morning gave way to bright sunshine. The start was delayed due to issues with bag drop (runners were still queuing at bag drop at 9am as the race was due to start). The race got underway at 9:15am although it took a further 30 minutes or so to get all of the runners across the start line. There were a few issues with the half marathon clashing with the marathon (simple timing issues which I hope can be sorted for next year). But absolutely nothing could take away from the way that Leeds showed up to support this marathon.
The streets were lined and the noise was incredible. The atmosphere rivalled the London Marathon and it blew all of us runners away to see how many people had come to support us on our marathon journey.
A high percentage of runners were completing their first ever marathon which added to the excitement. And of course the fact that Kevin Sinfield was pushing his mate, Rob Burrow, around the course was something that touched all of our hearts. An incredible amount of money was raised for extremely worthy causes, and I'm sure I can speak for all of the runners on the day when I say that this is a day we will never forget.
I hope the atmosphere comes across in this video as this really was a very special race. Oh... and the icing on the cake was that my official time was 5:00:00 which I don't think I could do again if I tried! Not bad to be bang on pace to the second, on reflection I am really pretty pleased with that! Congratulations to every finisher, those that couldn't finish are in my thoughts and huge thank you to everyone that made this marathon what it was. Every cheer, every motivational sign, every jelly baby or orange slice handed out, every volunteer marshal or water station volunteer, every hose pipe shower on route... thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. You have done Leeds proud and we are ever so grateful.
Happy running,
Nicola :)

I watched this full video last night but didn’t get round to commenting because it was on my main tv and I was on the treadmill at the time. What another awesome video, I was cheering on the day and I saw you and cheered you on. Superb pacing skills, I haven’t done a marathon yet but when I do, if I’m lucky enough to have a pacer like you I’d be thrilled. Am inspiration, what a lovely lady and what a wonderful difference you’re making to peoples lives - life gave you a few lemons but you made the tastiest lemonade out of them. Waiting for the day I see your channel blow up on utube because it deserves to. Much love to you and poppy x

Awww thanks for the most lovely message 🤗 A treadmill at home with a TV sounds a pretty cool set up... You can just put marathon videos on and pretend all the cheering is for you 😉😃 Pacing can be tough and we don't always get it bang on (although we always try our very best). I was EXHAUSTED after this race as it was like 5 hours of doing maths 🤣 it keeps me amused though, although it went out the window on the long hill as I wanted to try to keep people with me but even though I slowed right down I couldn't get many to stay with me. It was just too hot! Then I had to do all of the maths again as I'd deviated from the plan 🤣 Thanks again for taking the time to write such kind words 🤗

Thank you so much for not only pacing this but capturing the day so well. The atmosphere from the day really comes across. Can look back on this video in years to come and remember just how wonderful a day it was and how so many people came together to raise money for a wonderful cause. ✌🏼

Thank you 🤗 it's always hard at the time knowing if the atmosphere will come across and my focus was on pacing so your comment means a lot as sometimes trying to do more than one thing means you mess both up! Luckily I pulled it off 🎉 Over 4 million pounds raised so far! The power of running to bring people together to do good things really is amazing ❤️

Thank you, yes when someone said "this is the hardest thing I've ever done" it reminded me of just how much it means to everyone who is struggling but does it anyway. It's so humbling. Thank you very much for taking the trouble to do this. A camera in your hand and a big wafty pacing flag on your back must have been tricky, to say nothing of the "running" commentary! I was limping through the half while you were trotting through the full, but the first thing I did when I got home was to put my name down for next year's full. So it was really helpful to watch your lively and enthusiastic video, which gave me a good taste of what to expect. PS I used to do some of my photocopying at weekends in the Chemistry Department office many years ago!

Thank you so much Nicola, and massive congratulations on an incredibly paced race. Lots of pressure but what an amazing job you did. Loved this video. Unbelievable support from Leeds public and some truly incredible running from so many. Great to see so many familiar faces. I was a bit worried about the course but the hills weren't bad at all and the downhill finish was very welcome indeed. Congestion was an issue for speedy half marathon runners early on but congestion was also an issue for marathon runners after half & full marathons merged again in latter stages. Something organisers need to look at maybe? Thanks again, Nic. Just thought it was the wonderful day for Leeds. Incredible to see so many runners achieving greatness. Shame about the massage, again that is something for organisers to look at. Chips are a nice alternative. Ps. I recognised that voice - legend, Phil Hammond. (3:57)
@NicolaRuns
@NicolaRuns Жыл бұрын
Oh no! Hadn't thought about congestion for faster marathon runners. So leaving a bigger gap before setting off the half would just make that worse!!! I wonder what they can do about it... Other than do the original Leeds Half route on a different day as a friend suggested 🤣 I knew how you felt about the course beforehand so I'm delighted that you enjoyed it, it's such a gorgeous area to run in and hills just come with it. I bet you just flew up them! 🦅 Awww lovely Phil, he was my stand in cameraman! What a legend 😃 It was an incredible day wasn't it?! I know we prefer the trails but you can't beat a big city road marathon for crowd support 🥰
@MrCol104
@MrCol104 Жыл бұрын
I think the half will 100% stay on same day as full marathon so organisers will need to come up with something to ease congestion. They might just tell people to get on with it. 😆🤣 I did feel pressure because all the talk was miles of horrendous hills around mile 18. During the race I ran conservatively as I was mindful of what was ahead. The reality is the hills honestly weren’t bad at all. Another issue I haven't mentioned was toilets. Can't vouch for ladies but for gents they were completely inadequate. Most of the loos were locked which meant horrendous queues at the few available. I couldn't go to loo until 9 miles into the race, by which time I was in a lot of discomfort. A 2nd loo stop was needed before things improved. Mistakes were made, it's a new event so that is to be expected. A few minor adjustments will make this amazing event even better. Over all, it was an incredible thing to be part of and a major boost for Leeds.
@NicolaRuns
@NicolaRuns Жыл бұрын
@@MrCol104 I agree it'd be good for the half to be on the same day. I think they just need to split the road and put water stations on the left for the half and right for the marathon. Then they need to really clearly communicate that marathon runners need to keep right and half runners keep left. Maybe that would solve it 🤷🏻‍♀️ I didn't see from leaving home until 7pm that night!! Dehydrated much?! So I can't comment on the toilets, doesn't sound great though! Xx

Amazing video!! I did it last year my first marathon! I’m hoping to improve on last years time this year! Are you pacing again? And is it okay for runners to stick with a pacer for support and motivation? Thank you 😊🏃🏻‍♀️🤩

Thanks and congratulations on your first marathon last year! That's awesome 😃 It's not the easiest marathon to run! 🙈⛰️🤣 I'm down for pacing 5:30 this year and really looking forward to it 🤗 You're so welcome to stick with any of the pacers! That's what we're there for. Stay just in front of us, just behind us, next to us and chatting, next to us and silent, whatever best helps you get round 😃 What time are you aiming for? 😊

@@NicolaRuns Thank you, and Awesome! I may get to say Hi this year then😁 That’s great, I did 5.28 hrs last yr, I have trained following a plan this year so hoping to get a slightly quicker time😅 (however currently have an issue with my left quad🥹) I think it will really help me to try and keep with a pacer, your videos are really motivating! I Especially love the one at Thonock parkrun, it’s my local, I’m from Retford 🤩

Is there a warm up area? What’s the best time to get there? I’m running this year.
@NicolaRuns

I've not received this year's race info yet so wouldn't like to give information on timings in case anything changes. What I would say is that there was a VERY long queue to get into the stadium due to bag searches! There are a few places to warm up... No set area as such but the pens don't fill up until much nearer the start time so there were people warming up all over. It depends how long a stretch of road you want. If it were me then I'm not sure I'd go back out of the stadium once you're in because of the queues to get back in but it's big in there and you'll find somewhere I'm sure. I'd recommend running in the pens away from the start. There's lots of space there as people head to the start line. Obviously that's assuming the layout hasn't changed. As last year was the first year I'd expect a bit to change as the event beds in. There's a great group on Facebook 'Rob Burrow Marathon 2024' where you can ask any questions... if you're on Facebook that is ☺️

@NicolaRuns
@NicolaRuns Жыл бұрын
I did a recce of the route so I knew where we could bank little bits of time. It was definitely a hard one to pace and I'd pace it differently if I did it again. Even though I slowed down loads on the hill then not many people could stay with me. I think next time I'd bank more time in the first half and then slow right down on the hill to try to get people up it. The weather made it so hard for people. But yeah... It's basically 5 hours of doing maths and concentrating on a course like this 🤣 Even when I'm filming you can see that I keep glancing down at my watch... Gotta stay on pace! 😃

I'd definitely recommend it although it's a hilly one! The atmosphere was incredible! 😃 As a first marathon then the Yorkshire Marathon or Manchester Marathon are a lot flatter... But Leeds was awesome!

@@scottmacarthur88 when we're pacing then we're essentially working for them... Although we're volunteering, not getting paid. We don't get VIP anything though. I'm not sure what you'd get for that. I just rocked up, put the flag on my back and ran 5:00:00 😜 Don't let the hill put you off, the entire last 3 miles are downhill 😃😃😃

Meant to be both but they ran out of some. High5 tabs are mixed into bottles at several water stations but that often runs out 😫 best to take your own 👍

@Nicola Runs A slight personal disappointment from myself, but yeah, you are right glad to have got to the end. The 5:30 pacer gave me an orange calippo the last 2 mile after seeing me struggle. You guys deserve way more credit than you get. Thank you!

@@jamesgledhill3960 awww Amy is lovely isn't she! Yeah it's frustrating when things don't go as planned but long distance running is more about problem solving than running at times so if you made it to the end then you did pretty good at problem solving! You needed to walk to get to the end? Walk... You need an extra drink/to cool down/an ice cream to get to the end? Do it... If it gets you to the finish line then it was a success. There were a fair few blue lights out there on course on Sunday. Getting to the finish is an honour and a privilege and in time I hope the disappointment is replaced with pride 🥰
