I'm not sure there's any greater honour when running than to pace a race and have people thank you for helping them to achieve their running goals. The longer the distance the higher the emotional stakes.
It was an absolute pleasure to pace the 2022 Yorkshire Marathon as part of Northern Pacing Volunteers. Thanks to Nick Wealleans for all of his hard work behind the scenes to make sure our local races have pacers. I was inspired by so many people I met this day and am proud of everyone who crossed that finish line - it was emotional!
I absolutely loved this race, here's to future marathon pacing!
Happy running,
Nicola :)

No worries at all ❤️ Try to chill this week, I remember that nervous feeling but sleep and rest are your friend this week. The work has been done now so get your kit ready nice and early and then you can just look forward to it! I'm one of the 6 hour pacers so come say hi if we see each other at the start. The weather looks like it should be kind so fingers crossed the forecast stays the same. This time next week you'll be celebrating 🎉 I'm so excited for you! 😃

What a lovely video. Really enjoyed that Nicola. I’m doing York in a couple of weeks. It’ll be my third of the year … and also my third in 47 years 😂. I did Manchester and Leeds and found both quite overwhelming- watching this video has reassured me that York will be quieter and gentler and more my kind of thing 👍

Oh wow, congratulations on Manchester and Leeds, yes York will be a little quieter but still awesome. Check out Punk Panther races, they do some absolutely beautiful trail ultras and their 32 mile options actually feel easier than road marathons due to the variety of movement (because you climb over stiles and walk up hills etc). I can't recommend them highly enough 😃 but obviously after you've recovered from York! Good luck, I hope you have a fantastic race! 🤗

I did used to make awesome running fuel but when you make it yourself it's harder to package well. Really I'm just being lazy. This comment has inspired me to start making them again. Can’t believe it’s been 3 weeks since the Yorkshire marathon. It’s a great first marathon for anyone (this years being my first marathon) You were right about the headwind being a pain and the electrolytes! I managed a 4:45, but most stations were out of gels/tablets etc. which was frustrating. Also the event village could of been signposted a bit better That being said, I can’t wait for next years. The supporters and volunteers were brilliant :) Even signed up for the Rob burrows one in Leeds for May which looks very hilly! 😬 I managed to spot myself at 20:09 surprisingly looking stronger than I felt at the time 🤣
@NicolaRuns

Oh yay good spot! That's ace! Ooh so you're doing the double next year! Hopefully I'll be pacing them 😃🤞 Yeah that headwind was so bad and then it's hilarious as you turn round ready to feel a super strong tailwind pushing you back and you feel nothing 🤣 Congratulations on 4:45, Leeds definitely looks a lot hillier! It'll be interesting to see what it's like! ⛰️⛰️⛰️😂

Thanks Nicola. Yorkshire Marathon is awesome. Absolutely loved watching this. Brought back so many happy memories. You really caught the atmosphere of the day. Marathon running is a passionate business. When I see people running in memory of a loved one, it does make me quite emotional. Spotted quite a few 100 Marathon club members and not all were wearing their colours. Neil Phillips for example at 3:22 - the most patriotic welshman in the world. Nice to see the inspirational James Braithwaite 20:39. You might know them from IGUN events? Have to agree with regard to aid stations. They were plentiful but also all had water ONLY. You expect better at a big race. My other criticism was the medal - It was absolutely dreadful. Improvement for 2023, I hope. Thanks again for an entertaining video. Keep up the great work. Ps. That headwind was a pain. Must've been doubly difficult for you guys carrying the giant pacer flags?

Thanks Col 😊 I'm always so inspired by the hundred marathon club members 🤗 I hear you absolutely smashed it that day 💪😃 it's mad to think you'd finished several hours earlier... And then some! Love it! Great vid as always. How do you become a pacer? I’d love to do that. Also, is the idea to run even splits? You must get lots of race pals along the way. Only downside is that flag bopping you on the head. I’d imagine that running slower-than-normal pace would be a challenge too. What about that 1400+ marathon guy?! Runners are mad…
@NicolaRuns
@NicolaRuns Жыл бұрын
Thanks 😊 Yeah I literally couldn't believe it when I saw his t-shirt! 😱 So impressive, that's next level dedication to marathon running! Anyone can contact their local pacing volunteers. I imagine some might like you to gain experience by pacing at a parkrun or something but marathon pacers are often in short supply just because of the distance! Running slower than normal is fine, means you have to concentrate on pace more but otherwise no problem, it's running faster than normal pace you need to worry about 😉🤣
@NicolaRuns
@NicolaRuns Жыл бұрын
Oh and yes to even splits, no banking time although it's super hard to get the balance right. As long as it's fairly even pacing and you finish at around the right time then job done. Think I finished in 5:14:05 or something like that 😃
