I think another thing that makes the British version better is the look of the actors. The guys look like people that were at your school. The guys in the US version look like they came out of an acting agency.

I'd also like to add: The scene where Simon is drunkenly talking to Carly, another reason the joke fails to land is because in the US version, he's standing right up close to her, his face inches from hers. He seems predatory, as though he's about to make a pass at her. It's not funny, it's creepy. The UK version has him standing on the other side of the room, so he poses no immediate physical threat and just comes off as pathetic more than anything else.
@joaovictor3312
@joaovictor3312 2 жыл бұрын
Also the timing is totally off, he immediately says the punchline, making it look like he intended to say it twice, whereas UK simon takes a longer time to say it, which is not only funnier, but more fitting for a person in the drunken state he was.

When you're writing a comedy show I guess it helps if you have a cast of comedians making jokes about themselves, which is exactly what the British version had. Simon Bird is first and foremost a comic and was previously in a sketch group with Joe Thomas, James Buckley is also a stand up comedian. They even had Greg Davies - a high school teacher turned comic - play their teacher.

As a Brit, I actually love the US Office, i've binged watched it too, love the Brit Office too, they're both great, Brent and Scott are perfect comedy delivery actors who did it perfectly for their audience. @@freelancebush Fair, Joey was dumb, but the fatal flaw in this show is that they just tell us the character is dumb and expect us to laugh at it, they throw random, meaningless shit at the audience and hope something happens. In Friends, and Inbetweeners UK, they build up the jokes well, and actually show us how stupid the character is, and how their actions and decisions affect the audience’s perception of them.

Aimed at a different audience I think. The UK inbetweeners works well because they made it for the UK. With that in mind when you watch it, you may not get all the jokes but there are obviously funny and whitty lines in the show. The American version doesn't do the same thing. They see a great idea and instead of ACTUALLY working on creating a great reincarnation for American audiences, they think they can just coast on the back of the original while creating it almost exactly like the original. American comedy can be hilarious otherwise American stand up comedians would basically be terrible everywhere else. It's the lack of effort that these American remake companies put in when doing something like this that doesn't help their shows. If they aimed it at American youth instead of reusing jokes that most American's probably saw anyway, then it could've been great. Especially considering the remakes of shows aimed toward adults seem to actually work quite well they just need to learn a lesson with stuff like this. But they never seem to get it. I think they tried something like this with Skins as well and that tanked just as poorly. Let's see what's next.

i actually think Superbad is a better comparison with the UK inbetweeners than this attempt at a remake. Very different stories and characters on the whole, but the relationships in both felt genuine and the quick interactions between each friend group felt authentic. Also the buying alchohol scene has some obvious similarities with Will/Fogle both dressed to impress and getting laughed at despite their confidence.

Michael Graveline i never said your humour was bad, your humour is different, and that inbetweeners is a good insight into our humour as apposed to watching idiots like john oliver. And always sunny, is one of my favourite TV shows as well and louis CK being one of my favourite stand ups, (not a fan of his show though) also the UK version of shameless is a lot better, a lot more natural, earlier seasons are a bit outdated though. And the reason the office was successful in the US because it had good actors with british writers. Oh and some stand ups id recommend to you are: jimmy carr, frankie boyle, russel howard, hugh dennis, lee mack and jack whitehall, all varied really different styles, id avoid people like peter kay and michael mcintyre, they're just embarassing.

Kyle Dickinson i wasnt even aware shameless was a remake!!! Holy crap. You learn something new everyday lol...and i wasnt accusing you of anything like that (sorry if it appears that way). I just think even though there are some differences in our humours for the most part humour is universal. Like when i first saw the inbetweeners on netflix a couple years ago, as an american, i never found myself lost or really even a moment where i didnt understand the humour. Regardless of what our tv comedies may be, I just really dont think theres much difference between our humours. Btw have your ever seen a show called the increasingly poor decisions of todd margaret? Super funny show from david cross that literally combines british and American humour. Worth a check if you havent seen it. And jimmy carr is hilarious! Also glad to see john oliver isnt held in high regard over there. I think hes overrated but he does have a following over here.

I think that one of the biggest differences in a big between UK comedies and American comedies, is that the people from the UK carry a lot of resentment in they're humour which comes across as very dry and relatable (especially if you are British yourself). For example Will in inbetweeners UK is brilliant as he wants to be friends with all the others but absolutely resents them at the same time which really works. I find in American comedies, they find it hard to represent a feeling of resentment when trying to be funny and rely too much on just acting silly. I found this especially while watching shameless uk/us versions. I think the UK frank Gallagher plays the roll brilliantly as he can come across as very relatable as being the funny drunk but you can also see how much he resents everyone around him too. The American Frank Gallagher just seems like someone playing a hollow drunk person and doesn't come across as authentic and funny. And another thing not comedy related, I find is American shows always try to force a feeling of melancholia on to scenes that don't need it. Like a sad scene will have this soppy sad music over it to force you to feel sad, instead of the actors doing it themselves

Am I the only one bothered by the US character design? For one they made Will a stereotypical 'hot nerd', the whole point was that Will was meant to be a complete nerd who had no chance with girls, but they've made him completely attractive and still try to push the narrative of no girls going for him. Neil's design just...didn't work. His old design was that of fitting a stereotypical UK teenage boy and while this is depicted for America I still don't think his emo hairstyle fit well. Jay's one just didn't work at all, at least for me. I feel as if they went too far with creating him to be the average teen who wouldn't have a chance with girls and instead just made him very stereotypically unattractive. Simon didn't have statue of liberty hair.

Why can't Americans just watch the British version, do we speak a different language or something? It would be like us Brits making British versions of Frasier, Friends or the Big bang theory, it would be ridiculous. We enjoy American shows without remaking them. Do Americans believe a show can only be good if it's American?
@wurble

I personally think it's because American networks don't give the American audience enough credit for being able to _get_ humour outside of the U.S. They feel the need to Americanise our shows to make them palatable for the U.S audience. In reality, there are plenty of Americans who love and definitely _get_ British humour. Having said that, I think some of our shows loaded with profanity might cause issues on certain networks too.

I agree. I'm American and I love British TV shows but the networks definitely don't think most Americans will appreciate them. After several trips to the UK and watching a lot of British TV, I get most of the slang but there are still pop culture references that go over my head. One of my favorite shows, Mongrels, often refers to British TV personalities who I'm completely unfamiliar with. Still, I was pleased to get this reference in the UK Shameless when Veronica refers to the backyard of her house as "looking like Steptoe's". Which reminds me, the one good American remake of a British show is Shameless, in my opinion. The first season of the American version stuck pretty closely to the British one but it's really gone off in its own direction since then. I've consistently enjoyed it.

As an American, I love British Inbetweeners just for the amount of google searching I have to do. It's always charming to hear derogatory terms that I'm unfamiliar with and later find out what they mean.

there really doesn't need to be an American version of British stuff or vice versa does there, surely the popularity of Monty Python's in the USA and the Simpsons in the UK shows us that

Bot23 yes but the office adapted a lot more from the UK version and had very little similaritys unlike what the inbetweeners and others haven't done

Yeah the office really only shares it's name and the very basic concept of odd characters in an office, the USA version of Shameless was so unnecessary and the UK version of married with children was also not needed, the only time i can think of where an American version of a British show has worked is house of cards

yeah, I agree the Americans have butchered a lot of great and original British ideas like Life On Mars, Top Gear, Faulty Towers etc.

Exactly ! They did this exact same thing with skins. The situations, storyline and humour just doesn't sit right when it's American-ised. I'm Sure Americans have their own scandalous and relatable comedies so it makes nooo sense. Lol

American tv doesn't understand the actual humour that "cringe" can bring and just use it as cringe, also the american one is so unrealistic compared to the british one which was the main attraction of it.

+Windex Original I read that some American nursery schools wouldn't let their children watch Barney the Dinosaur because he did magic and that a toddler said that "he was better than Jesus". It's a kids show that teaches children valuable life lessons like love and numbers, they just banned it because of a statement a child made.
