The Inbetweeners USA is a remake of the classic British comedy The Inbetweeners. The Inbetweeners USA however is terrible, I watched the entire thing with some friends.

I remember seeing this when it aired, it confirmed one thing to me. The Americas DO NOT get British humour, it’s been done countless times. The inbetweeners, shameless, the office (season 1, as season 2 onwards the office went down a different path) possibly even more, they’ve been executed badly REALLY REALLY badly

This just shouldn't have existed. The original Inbetweeners is way too rooted in British culture. I won't lie, the discrepancy between Jay especially is mind-blowing. They're both the weird bullshitters, but the UK Jay had this strange childlike edge to his performance, and you could easily tell the intention is that he's a young kid lying his way through things to impress his mates (Especially since they introduce his dad and his dad just berates and humiliates him constantly which genuinely explains everything about his character). The US one gives me some real "40 year old manager hitting on the 18 year old cashier" vibes which makes my skin crawl. Edit: Oh, he's a fucking nonce too. Great...

Superbad had the same kind of premise, a bunch of nerdy, awkward, but likable guys trying to survive the social scene in high school, and that was a banger movie. This series had the same potential I reckon, just a shame they tried so hard to match the British style of humour with such a wet cast

@dancostello4872

Do you live in the US because over here the general consensus in schools is that a 1 year gap is acceptable; 2 or more makes you a nonce (until you're both at least 18/adults). Obviously there are exceptions but every school I went to (too many lmao) had that same philosophy/unwritten rule. The worst thing about them making Jay a nonce is that the idea did have potential... but it needed keeping to just one episode - Jay unknowingly pursues a 13 year old but when she hints at her age (like making a school-related comment), he immediately backs off; the others still rib him, which would let the writers fit all the jokes in like the play area one (kinda like how the lads bombarded Will with shit puns after hearing that he'd shat himself in the exam). Come the next episode, everyone moves on and forgets about the underage girl, who doesn't show up again; basically what was done with Hannah Fields in the original.

The problem with the Inbetweeners US was not only that they tried to convey UK "lads" and UK "teen" culture to an American setting but also the problems with the dialogue. They seemed to rush through everything and try to overexaggerate scenes to make it more dramatic. For example, when Will is explaining to Carlys little brother that his parents would die in the UK version, the scene is shot in a way where it is in a setting of casual conversation. It really highlights the idea of Will being so drunk that he is explaining in detail how Carlys parents would die to a young child and not noticing on the effects on the child after. It does all of this whilst talking how normal people would talk, not changing the sound of Wills voice or facial expression. Will speaking like regular Will. In the US version, eerie background music plays as he stares blankly with no facial expression to almost seem like hes trying to scare the kid. Speaking in a different tone to usual and showing a blank stare, which in turn changes the whole bit of it being an ACCIDENT from Will who's too drunk to realise to Will purposely scaring the kid. They also just put little detail into scenes and dont go in depth. Like with when Will goes to buy the alcohol, in the UK version he comes in severely overdressed and being way too overconfident to try and convince the cashier that he is in fact legal when it is apparent hes not shown by his overconfidence. The cashier then says in a stern and firm voice to buy the drinks and get out which clearly intimidates Will and he does so. After buying the drinks he re-puts on that overconfident persona and leaves. In the US, Will firstly wears the same clothes and seems to speak as he normally would throughout the whole season. The cashier instead of being intimidating and firm seems to not care and just lazily says the line, which then Will clearly overreacts his facial expression and then continues with his days. Again same with Mr Gilbert (one of the better US characters I may say) in the UK hes a large, intimidating and quite frankly frightening man but is very witty and sarcastic towards the students. In the US version hes a shorter, much smaller frame and really not that intimidating man who just makes fun of Will. When that wasn't the whole point. Whilst Gilbert made fun of will, he did it usually when Will would comment something or he would do it when the comedic presence was there. The US gilbert just constantly makes fun of will and seems to go out of his way to make fun of him, when the real Gilberts whole aura was that he didnt give a shit about Will or any of the students. There are so many more examples, but I think my point is clear. The US inbetweeners tried to translate British humour and Americanise it which is never good and also firstly didn't know how to transition that comedy and Americanising it properly as well as being lazy and setting up scenes to what the original scene and/or character signified. They failed to add plot and added stupid subplots (such as Jay being very creepy, a Pedophile constantly in the show etc) and over dramatize the entire show. Whilst I think there is no other "good way" to make the inbetweeners as it was very centred around British culture regarding teens, partying, sex etc and no matter what happened it wouldn't of come close to the original, this definitely could of been made bareable to watch. IMO the Inbetweeners is the funniest show I ever watched growing up as a teen, it was so relatable Edit: Also another problem with Jay apart from the fact hes a PEDOPHILE, is that in this he talks big to his mates and then actually goes around acting confident. In the UK he acted confident to his mates and lied, but as soon as he was around a female or an intimidating guy he said he was mates with he was very nervous. He never held the same energy, which was the point of jay. Neal was stupid yes, but he was funny stupid. He was like a bit slow thats all. In this hes braindead. Simon just gets shell-shocked at whenever anything happens and puts up overexaggerated facial expressions. Will just is annoying and unlikeable and just a dud character. He doesnt add anything.

I absolutely cringe at the thought of Americans watching this and believing that it was a word-for-word remake, and so think one of our most well-loved tv shows has a proud nonce in it. And we all just loved it for some reason.
