There are a lot of popular misconceptions about pirates, but the trope of pirates marooning victims on desert islands has a strong historical backing. For instance, codes of law followed by pirates specifically listed marooning as a punishment for breaking the code. While pirates left victims of marooning for dead, there are a few survival stories. We look at the story of Alexander Selkirk, one of the most famous survival narratives.
A special thanks to Sean Feely and Bobby Jordan, two of our most valued Patreon supporters!

The parrot myth stems from a great interest in England and other countries for rare wildlife . Sailors tried to smuggle aboard birds and other beasts to bring back and sell when they reached home ports. Parrots and other exotic birds would have been seen as valuable booty to exchange in places like Charleston South Carolina, where they would be funneled back on merchant ships and sold for a profit.

The only pirate to bury treasure was Captain Kidd. After he was caught by officials for piracy, he was sentenced to be hanged. He tried bargaining with the officials and bribing them with the location of his hidden treasure; to escape death. But to his dismay, he was still hanged anyway. Treasure is still yet to be found I believe

@@T0pMan15 Vikings are, in a very literal sense, pirates. They are not synonymous with "scandinavians." To go on a "viking" was more or less synonymous with going on a "raid", aka, to go pirating.

For the time, the opposition having enough mercy to give you a “more humane” & quick ending compared to the contrary was kind of surprising to me honestly.
@aleksisuuronen5969
@aleksisuuronen5969 2 жыл бұрын
I don't know it's a bit sarcastic also in my mind. Like what if you save it, see a boat and fire but they don't hear it so now you are just screwed to die from multiple things (maybe you could hang yourself with some bs if there is actually a jungle in the island and not just rocks). Also like you can propably before they leave maybe even shoot the captain if still sight when loading and most likely get killed instantly after that one but you would have to do the decision in a split second, so that would be running in your mind if in rage but survival instincts kick in. Also like the gun will be there to haunt you when you are at your lowest and many propably didn't even try and do something with the situation before just popping themselves. Firstly it sounds to me a bit sarcastic because of the bottle of water, like thanks a lot you're leaving me here but a bottle of water.. how nice of you. I don't know man, I would rather take the gun but it sounds a bit like somekinda sick joke to the people giving it to you. These people might haul you under the boat full of barnacles so they aren't exactly the humane kind.

I must admit, i did name my fav. cat ( over 50 fury pets known in my 55 years) capt jack. On my page I have one video created. Its my cheap video for my beloved capt. jack ~As an outdoor cat who claimed its "owner" I was pleasantly surprised to be able to train him to use a lower voice in the house. Capt'n jack would come into the house "MEOW! MMEEEOOW! To change this I would take away his food and place on top of the refrigerator. He would scream for his food. UNTIL.. he got tired....after about 2 hours. then he softened his meow. BOOM! Food served. He was a very smart cat. That was it. One time. Then one he would walk in , scream a MEOW to let me know he's in, then a meow, to let me know he's home :)

It makes sense. Execution is such a horrible thing and nobody wants to do it, especially on a small ship with maybe 150 people. Better maroon troublesome crew members to almost certain death and still have a relatively clear conscience knowing that they have some slim chance of survival.

The narrator is wrong @ the 1:54 mark one can read that the marooned was given one bottle of powder (gun powder), one bottle of water, one small arm and shot. One small arm could be a rifle or musket, (large arms were cannons) so you got a powder flask and shot ( bullets) and water. Not one loaded pistol so you could end your life. On the San Fernando island that Alexander Selkirk was marooned, when he was left by captain Stradling, he was left with his stowage box, a musket and powder & ball shot. The island was also used by the Spanish, he had to hide from and the Spanish sailors grew vegetable gardens on the island that Selkirk took advantage of.

Alexander Selkirk was Scottish. He was born 8n Fife, in a sleepy little fishing town called Lower Largo. A place I used to caravan holiday as a child. Largo has a statue of the fictional "Robinson Crusoe" as Selkirk was factually the inspiration for Defoe's famous book. Slainte Mhath 2024

It's amazing how Vikings and other pirates have been romanticized rather than properly vilified in pop history, entertainment that is. Not so much the Barbary Pirates though. Most are unaware they ever existed. "and the shores of Tripoli"? Do modern US Marines even know what that means?

US Marines definiely know. The organization is very big on teaching it's history as a means of instilling a sense of esprit de corps in it's recruits. As Eric noted, it's part of what they're taught in basic training.

But from 1:55 onwards, for the #BlackBart bit; how are you going to punish the deserters? They've deserted, so they're gone...

Is it derst island or deserted island? I've always been confused since most seem to be tropical with plenty of rainfall.

The term "desert" in the context of an island is an archaic form of "deserted", ie.. void of people. So in modern times, while we probably should say "deserted island", the old form still hangs around (probably from all the literature) and thus "desert island" is still often used. Also, not to be confused with the word "desert" that represents an wasteland of sand.

@@5thGenNativeTexan Desert also used in the Antarctic exploration stories. Desert meaning vast , uninhabitable territory. Due to not only lack of water, but lack of about anything. Plus severe weather too hot or too cold. “ Taint nuttin’ here lieutenant
